The Screech

¤ ¤ ¤

The two of the students stopped "Maybe this was a bad idea" Janna murmured to Albus, her breathe making a thick cloud of fog, they shivered as a harsh wind rattled through the leaves. Needles hissed at the two, Janna instinctively took out her wand Albus looked up then put his back to Janna's.

"What is that?" Albus asked as the trees began to creak in the strong wind, causing Janna to hold one of the tongues of her scarf, the wind picked up further causing the trees to sway violently like angry charging people.

Janna felt cornered, like she was being caught. Her breathe caught in her throat as fear choked her, through the trees a crouched creature with a long out stretched arm with a long pointing finger. The cloak of the creature let the wind carry it away a little as it stumbled to them. Bulbous, luminous, yellow eyes shined from under the hood. Janna shivered, she had her wand pointing at the creature as the stout snout showed through he the shadow of the hood baring a strange bruised purple skin and mattered brown fur on its snout. Albus glanced over Janna's shoulders seeing vines creeping up her legs and to her wrists "Janna!" He saw the creature open a gaping mouth, baring haggard teeth and a long snake-like tongue.

Albus aimed at the vines grappling at Janna's limbs, he aimed his wand at the vines "lumos holem!" There was a bright beam of light from his wand but the plants didn't react as he thought it would "Janna move!" Albus shook Janna's shoulders as the creature's eyes blared with fury "We have to move"

SCKREEEEEEEEEEEEIIIII! A continuous din of a force scratching across a plate broke the noise of the thrashing leaves and crashing piles of snow. The creature was pointing at Janna, holding its other long fingered hand to its chest as through it was scared, screaming at her as though it was pointing her out. The two dropped to the forest floor having pine needles tickle their cold skin, Janna held her ears that were irritated by the high pitched noise that Albus couldn't hear.  The creature created a blast of wind so strong that it blew Albus over with the force of the screech.

Janna crushed her ears, trying to hold out the screech while Albus pulled her away from the creature that was inching closer with leaves and snow lifting up behind it like a macabre veil of death—BAAASH! A golden flash of light shot into the cloaked creature, the two creatures tumbled on the needles flipped into the air followed by a sudden dark shadow that shot away into the trees, the golden creature snapped at the air as the shadow disappeared.

The wind died down, then golden creature hobbled to Albus, Janna lifted her hands from her face that was wet with  tears, her nose and her cheeks with red. She leaned into his chest as the large birdlike creature came towards her, it's beak clicking. The large bird came to Janna's arm, nudging her arm, she looked at his beak "Goldfeather!" Janna called out, hugging her arms around the bird's neck, slipping down as her strength waned.

"I think we were attacked by a Boggart" Albus said as he knelt to Janna who stroked the Thunderbird's neck "Are you okay?"

"Yes... I j-just..." Janna couldn't answer since she felt like all her blood had left her body, Goldfeather lifted his neck to lift Janna to stand on her wobbly knees "a Boggart?"

"Yeah, a creature that takes the shape of your greatest fear, I realised what it was when I tried to get the devil's snare off your legs," Albus explained as he put her arm over his shoulder "that has done something to you. What was that thing, anyways?"

Janna shook her head "the—th-that creature was this monster I used to imagine when I was little before I was—er... before I was about five, it has always scared me to this day... I don't know why though" Janna lied, she knew what this creature was and why it was still with her. This was something that pointed Janna out in her nightmares, she always remembered Mr Winslow coming down the stairs to help her to calm down again to put her back to sleep; this creature would point out that Janna was an even worse monster than it was.

The two walked with Goldfeather behind them, meanwhile Janna lead Albus to the clearing she would tell him where to go in order to get to where Goldfeather had ran from, claw marks and scratches were etched into the trees where the giant eagle clawed his was through the tight trees "I'm not crushing you, am I?" Janna asked.

Albus shook his head, quickly repositioning her arm on his shoulders to get a better hold of her weight "No," Albus felt her body come closer to his, leaning on his shoulder "I-I'm fine"

Goldfeather purred at Albus, the young boy glanced up from his gaze at the forest floor, the bird jerked his head to a beam of light which cascaded from a rip in the tree line. There was a large nest across from them, the dark trees glowed blue from the white sunlight as Albus pulled Janna's through a tight space between two trees, "Are you alright?" Albus asked Janna, squeezing her hand tightly as her head lolled over her shoulders letting her corkscrew hair fall over her face.

Janan heard Albus but she was too weak to respond, she had her eyes closed to ease her pain.

A hot surge of panic surged through Albus' stomach "Janna?" Albus shook her arm that was curled on his shoulder  "I need to lay you down," Albus attempted to hug Janna under her arms but his hand brushed her jumper, feeling her hand move from his shoulder  "S-SORRY!" He yelped as Janna fell on his chest, she slid down his leg before Goldfeather caught her back with his neck, her arms splayed open bouncing up and down.

Albus knelt to Janna's side as Goldfetaher lowered his large head to let Janna slid off his liquid-like feathers "Next... time..." Janna murmured, feeling her eye squint in the bright light of the sunlight blanketing her in warmth "don't... drop me" Opening her eyes properly Janna pursed her lips seeing Albus stare at her arm, the one sleeve had rolled up in her toss to the pine needle cushioned floor.
