The Ferret on the Knight Bus

¤ ¤ ¤

For about six weeks Janna wondered about that stick, she had tried to go see it again but The box had been relocated to an unknown location.

Janna walked through the suburb of Leve Don, she shivered a few times as the August wind blew through her clothing.

The bus stop was nearby the house so she'd have no problems getting to The Leaky Cauldron, the wind blew again, Janna looked up at the grey sky, it was the middle of the early morning, the pavement seemed a bit deserted to Janna, she twirled around as she walked to the bus stop.

It was almost like a ghost town, Janna shivered before she ruffled up her scarf to keep her more warm, she could only hear the sound of the leaves cluttering on the roads. As Janna reached the bus stop she leaned on the pole holding up the roof, she reached her hand into the sky like usual and—BANG! Janna braced her eyes for the bright light, at the uneven pavement a violently purple bus rolled to a stop, Janna slid her hand from over her eyes as she then balanced herself on the krummholz of the pavement and the road. A fairly young man wearing a purple uniform stepped out from the back of the bus, he caught sight of Janna "Hullo Miss, the usual?"

"Yes, thank you" Janna quietly said, she knew Trent, the conductor, meant well but Mr Winslow had instructed Janna to not get too close to people, he had warned her of the importance of keeping her secret safe.

At the rear of the bus Janna sat on one of the chairs stationed around a table, there were different designs of chairs to be seen around the half-dozen tables protruding from the wooden panelled walls, Janna squished herself into her corner at the rear of the bus, she noticed other people sitting on the chairs, one of which was a man, with about six cardboard boxes next to him, he had a box on his lap which he was  struggling to keep closed, Janna couldn't help but watch as he desperately muttered words under his breathe while pointing his stubby wand the box—THE STICK, IT WASNT A STICK, IT WAS A WAND! Janna felt like a heavy coat had just been taken off her shoulders. It's a wand—but the Winslows don't use magic.

Trent came from behind Janna, she immediately looked at her fingers to fix the fingerless gloves to her wrists again before pulling her sleeves down, Janna watched him stretch over the tight squeezes through the chairs to the front of the bus where the old man named Ernie Prang was sitting in an old armchair, his thick glasses seemed to be thicker than the bus doors.

"Let's go Ernie" Trent nodded to Ernie, Janna held the table before a blaring BOOM came before the bus jerked back, the chairs moved nearer to the rear like they had a mind of their own. The world outside seemed to blur past, Janna leaned onto the wall as she let go of the table her curly brown hair bunched up and acted like a pillow as Janna leaned on the wooden panels.

In her mind Janna counted how much money she had, not just any money, Wizarding money, for Janna this currency was normal, Galleons, Sickles and Knuts made the more sense to her than why some people didn't notice The Knight bus, as Janna remembered the money works; Seventeen sickles, that was a small silver coin, to a Galleon, which was a big gold one, and twenty-nine Knuts, which were little bronze ones, to a Sickle, although Janna found the Knuts to be a bit worthless if you had only a few of them.

Trees continued to rush past the bus, Janna breathed deeply before a glowing blue sheen on the table caught her eyes, she looked at the illumination on the table, she frowned and looked up at the window, for a split second she saw some sort of bird, it had breathtaking feathers like a peacock would have, the bird emitted the light, it's head leaned to Janna through the glass, it stared at her before leaping off the bus.

Janna stared in awe as the light dimmed away, she felt like she'd seen this bird before, in a brief memory from long ago. The bus stopped suddenly, causing a riot of the chairs making them slide to the front. Trent stood up from his chair and called out  "Whitehall, Mister Mustel", Trent guided the man with the shaking box through the chairs while he carried the six boxes in a wobbling stack, carefully scooting the chairs out the way, as the two stalked through the chairs a box blew open into white flakes that showered to the floor then up and away in a wind.

Next to Janna, popping out of a burst of the same white flakes, a white ferret laughed while pointing at the man who gasped, he immediately pulled out his wand while clambering over the chairs "Get that ferret!" He shrieked, his beard bounced on his chest as he came nearer to the ferret who turned his head to Janna before tilting his head.

Janna reached out to catch him but in a blink he burst into white flakes which blew towards Janna. A new weight came to Janna's head as the man then leapt onto the place next to Janna's table "Accio Ferret" he cried but instead of catching the ferret his wand attracted dozens of the flakes.

There was a loud jeering laugh coming from one of the open windows of the bus, the man leapt onto the table, Janna bounced back in her seat as he then slammed his hand onto another burst of the white flakes, he banged his fist on the frame before grumbling under his breathe. What he didn't know that the ferret was clinging to his back like a spider, Trent immediately tried to snatch the ferret but a puff of the white flakes blew to the direction of the rear, right past Janna.

"Oh Merlin, he got away" The man then got off the table, he glanced at Janna, who ruffled up her scarf and pulled her sleeves down, the man looked back at Trent "Young man, if you see that ferret again you will have to alert the Ministry" the  man then scanned the room slowly.

"Sir?" Janna asked quietly, the man's eyes then stopped at Janna "might I ask: what is so special about this ferret?"

The man grunted "He was an illegally bred magical creature, some Pureblood family in Mayfair wanted to get something exotic; they couldn't handle the little beasts so that's why I'm here, to kill them off" the man then grinned cloyingly, this made Janna shift uneasily in her seat "but don't worry, they don't know they're even alive." He stared at Janna, his eyes watching her attentively, as he turned away and fixed his glasses to the ridge of his nose he said "well, farewell Miss, find me in the Magical Creatures Department of the Ministry if you spot him"

This made Janna shiver, she shifted forwards in her chair before a loud clank behind her made her jump a little, she breathed in deeply before resting her head on the panelling again. It was unsettling to think that people thought so lowly of such amazing creatures, if Janna were to see that ferret again she'd use him to terrorise Mrs Winslow.

Janna leaned her head against the wood panelling again, being a werewolf in his world wasn't easy, Janna had always been twitchy around people from the Ministry, the werewolf sign up board didn't have her name on it and if anyone from that place found out—Janna preferred to not ponder upon that topic.
