Mistaking Malicious Mischief

¤ ¤ ¤

As the door opened Ash leapt from his globe, finally he could see Janna, he slipped between the crack of the door not dispersing so he could stay undetectable. Potter stepped through seeing Orion leaping back from the door, the Professor's eyes widened.

"I heard nothin' sir." Orion assured the Professor, his wiry hair swaying before his eyes "Has Janna been given irn bru? When will she back on her feet?" Orion desperately questioned.

"Janna needs rest, Cintola, she's just used too much magic in one day. Also she is very distraught from the funeral, give it a few days." Potter answered turning away but Orion caught the Professor's elbow with a grab.

"Sir... It's... My. Fault" Orion staggered "I made her come with me te see the squid, ye know, to see if it was actually there—"

   "Janna told me everything—"

"Is she angry?" Orion's grey eyes pleaded, his eyebrows puckered in worry as his hands clenched the Professor's  purple robes.

Potter couldn't help but chuckle "Janna can't be angry with you, she's not that type of person"  Orion looked at Potter with a look that knew the Professor was telling him something that Orion didn't understand "Come to my office, have a cup of tea, we can talk about Janna there"

The talk with Professor Potter a week ago moved Orion, Potter spoke of being unable to save everyone but keep them on a string because one day you'll never know which one is in trouble when one is tugged. The wiry haired boy was passed by Aimee Miller who giggled shyly when she passed him but he ignored her as he turned a corner to the steps to the Hospital wing.

The boy had his hands buried in his thick jacket that hung off his skinny, pale body.  He wondered if Janna was awake, Pomfery had chased him away every day he had come. Even once he attempted to enter the wing at night under the invisibility of night but the doors were locked, alohamora did not open the lock like it was supposed to.

Orion was not the only boy attempting to visit Janna, Albus had almost slipped into the hospital wing by waiting until Pomfrey went out the doors and he would slip through, the problem is that Pomfrey turned around as she closed the door and saw Albus who was pulled out by his ear.

Throughout the two days the boys had tried to break into the wing Janna was reading a Dark Arts book which Potter had given her, the theory would help her understand her power further. She read about how people used the type magic for bad deeds so Janna wrote her intentions on a parchment.

Only when Professor Potter came to the wing one morning did Orion come with the him to see Janna because he now knew of her powers. Orion had been sitting at the door of the hospital, his black coat surrounded him like a shadow, his wiry hair falling over his face as he read a book that rested on his bent knees.

When Orion came in Janna was sitting on the edge of her bed, her feet dangling over the floor as Pomfrey wrapped her arms, the bandages had dittany soaked gauze sticking to the skin to promote healing. Pomfery was nearly finished with the lad of both the arms when Janna spotted Orion, he smiled at Potter's side at her.

"Good morning!" Janna smiled with her face brighter than usual, less tired and pale, Pomfrey looked over her shoulder to Professor Potter and Orion.

"Hullo Janna" Orion greeted as he then came to Janna's side and jumped onto the mattress next to her, she wrapped her free bandaged arm around his shoulder and hugged him.

"It's so nice to see you" Janna leaned onto his shoulder while he put an arm around her shoulders "Pomfrey thinks I might get an infection from the tears in my scars so she's wrapping my arms in this gross stuff" Janna held her arm up to his nose, the dittany smelt strongly of plant matter and lime.

"Janna, she might think ye arms are gonna fall off" Orion shrugged as he watched Pomfery wrap Janna's forearm and wrist.

"They won't," Pomfrey said, "I'm concerned about the scaring"

"I have so many of them, ma'am, I don't think I should worry about getting more" Janna shook her head, Orion ruffled her hair up. "Ya can still get on ya face, which will be far more easy t'be seen" Orion muttered as Janna fixed her hair by pushing it back.

Janna chuckled "that won't ever happen." Pomfrey finished  with the bandage and bent Janna's arm to see if the linen held.

"Hopefully, Miss Black. You are not as careful as you like to be" Pomfrey packed her bandages in their bags "but I will be here to wait for you"

A smile curled on Janna's lips, a cocky smile. Orion elbowed her to draw her attention to Ash sleeping in the big with the cotton tufts, they both chuckled as Pomfrey closed the medicine bag, clipping the golden buckles Pomfery jumped, nearly dropping the bag when a hysterical squeak hailed from the case that burst open with white flakes that sprouted towards the ceiling where Ash was twisted around a branch of the candelabrum above like a dust heavy cobweb.

There was a burst of laughter from Orion and Janna, her arm was holding her stomach with his arm tight over her shoulders. Pomfrey stared up at Ash as the ferret attempted to creep away without being seen. Potter attempted to Accio Ash but the ferret dispersed into flakes, a few of which were attracted to the Professor's wand but moved away to gush under Janna's pillow.

"Keep that ferret away from this Hospital Wing! Next moment it apparates into a student" Pomfery prodded Janna before closing her bag again after checking for any live creatures.

"Gads, she's strict, is't she?" Orion muttered to Janna who watched Potter take out a book from his robes.

A book with a inky violet cover that seemed to have a moss like appearance came into the light "I'll need you to read this, as well, while you are here" Potter then glanced at Pomfrey as he leaned to Janna, who watched the book carefully, like it was an object to be studied.

"What is this one about?" Janna questioned as she ran her thumb up and down the spine, feeling the strangely soft material of the cover.

Silence befell the air around the three, Orion looked at Potter who was looking at him through the back of his eyes the iris peaked out of the rim of the wire framed glasses. "I think I bet'er get going," Orion caught Janna's attention and be quickly hugged her tightly, wrapping his arms around her small shoulders "bye-bye, ma'e"

"See you later Orion" Janna smiled but Orion had already turned around, his hands deep in his coat pockets with legs stretching to sprint to the hospital door, knowing Pomfrey would throw him out if he stayed longer.

There was an urge to turn back to the book but Janna could not peel her eyes from the doors, she watched the cracks in the wood and the curved clad iron handles waiting for someone to walk in "You still don't entirely trust him, do you?"

"You haven't known him for long, this might all just be an act" Potter warned but Janna shook her head "Nobody but a few know about this, you have to be careful"

A tight knot pulled Janna's throat from her stomach causing a lazy huh to come from her mouth "You sound like Mr. Winslow," she gently reached up to fix Potter's coat lapel that he had not tended to, this motion mimicked how Mr. Winslow would fix her scarf to cover her scars "keep to yourself,  Janna, be careful who you talk to and if possible don't say more," Janna cited in a low voice, she patted the material to smooth a crease which undid a different crease causing the rest of the coat to sway into place "I don't feel like being careful anymore, what would the point of living be?"

Potter sat himself next to Janna, she stared down at the violet book's cover on her lap that she rested her hands on, she began to fiddle with her sleeves to cover her wrists "I don't want to exist in fear, I want to live, you know, I... I want to be... well, I want to be—" her lip curled into a small smile as she looked up at the doors, thinking of the boys, the adventurous boys "—mischievous. Or less careful—I want to make mistakes—"

"Many mistakes can cause a lot to go wrong" Potter told Janna, she shrugged,

But Janna remembered her mistake, her wrong, her trust "no," Janna hissed at herself, her fingers curling around the corners of the book "I can't make mistakes anyways, I think I'm all out... one massive mistake changed my life I'm sure nothing can get worse..." Her eyes fixed on a scar showing under her jumper sleeve "I'm sure-sure"

Potter smiled at Janna, she turned to stare up at him, feeling watched "alright, but you can always come to me if you make a mistake" Potter stood up, fixing his collar "I need to get going as well, Pomfrey's coming to usher me out"
