Goldfeather

¤ ¤ ¤

A gargantuan bird's head shone in the shadow of the cave, golden specks on the golden stalks of the feathers glowed in the sunlight, the bird stepped into the sunlight, a large pair of wings was echoed by two more smaller pairs to the end of the tail; all were folded at the sides of the creature. With  a sharp, snapping, silver beak the bird swung at passing insects, long curling talons clutched at the grassy forest floor and donning dusted gold feathers from behind a sharp beak to a long bendy tail.

"There's Goldfeather for yeh, had 'im for three years no'," Hagrid began to unscrew the jar, rattling his fingers on the glass to catch Goldfeather's attention, the large bird' head tilted followed by a crown of feathers to stand up to display interest. Hagrid let a few fireflies escape the jar by lifting the lid ever so slightly. When Goldfeather took notice of the bugs his wings sparked with zaps of static electricity, his beak jittered as the fireflies began to float up to the sunlight. "Up!" Hagrid yelped, Goldfeather's colossal wings opened, all three pairs opened sending small zaps of static from his wings to mingle in the branches of the trees, with a great flap the huge bird lifted off the forest  floor. The wings of the bird created a vacuum that Goldfeather used to reel in the bugs, the golden bird swung his wings in the air to hover above the ground to draw the insects closer.

The bird's great jaws snapped at the fireflies, in one enormous gulp Goldfeather swallowed them all whole, his large beak snapping at the air again to clear away any of the debris that might have been left behind on his sharp beak. Satisfied, Goldfeather let himself hover downwards before hobbling to Hagrid like an overly excited dog. Pushing his large face to the jar of fireflies and nudging at the jar which his beak he leaned towards the jar with one eye attentively watching the glowing insects. The sparking bird gently clawed at the jar with an oryx talon, opening his wings to keep balance on one foot "Nah," Hagrid forcefully pushed Goldfeather's forehead "you've already had, Goldie"

As Goldfeather trotted back to regain his balance Fang began to bark at him. In response the bird thundered to Fang who bowed down into a playful stance towards the bird that was twice his size, Goldfeather did the stance in return and Fang rolled his wrinkly body to the grass, baring his belly, Goldfeather rubbed his head into Fang's tummy like a playful puppy.

"Why do you have a Thunderbird, don't they like the deserts of Arizona?" Juno questioned as the group watched Fang spring up to run with Goldfeather chasing him between a few trees.

"Nah, I can' take Goldfeather back there, he was jus' a hatchling when I found 'im in the forest one nigh', he was all alone so I raised him." Hagrid
beamed at the boarhound "Fang became his mummy so when I wanted to le' the bird go he wouldn't leave withou' Fang" Hagrid explained having Goldfeather bump into his knee while Fang yapped playfully at him. Goldfeather squawked at Fang, hobbling after the boar hound as the bag of wrinkles jumped over the ferns and logs at the edges of the clearing.

Orion spoke to Janna's ear "Ye know, Hagrid lets me ride de creatures, yu shoul' ask 'im..."

"Excuse me?" Janna whispered back, turning her head away from Goldfeather and Fang's antics.

"Ye kee' on starin' at the bird, jus' ask, don' hold yur wheesht" Orion patted her arm, Hagrid cleared his throat, the sound caught the two creatures' attention and the four first years. Janna turned to Hagrid, she felt so meek and a lot smaller compared to the large giant "Orion mentioned he rides the creatures, I was wondering whether I can—"

"O' course!" Hagrid bellowed, he patted his side to beckon Goldfeather to his side, the bird ran his beak under the platter sized hand "come on 'ere." Hagrid excitedly ushered Janna to the giant bird' neck, he patted the place between the neck and the wings "jus' sit there, don't mind his neck if ya get too close" Janna stared at the eagle' eyes observing her.

Orion whooped when Janna pulled herself onto the bird's shoulders by wrapping her arms over his narrow shoulders, Hagrid placed his palm under her foot to give her a boost onto the bird's neck. Janna sat up straight, she only now realised there was nowhere to hold onto. At either side of her broad wings fanned open, Janna's eyes widened as she felt the wings beat at her legs, sparks tickled the scars on her feet.

"Where do I hang on?" Janna asked quickly when the bird's wings slapped the air downwards, panicking her hands slipped on the feathers but latched around his shoulders. Goldfeather leaned his head to watch her with one eye to direct his  playful chattering as though to congratulate her. His face swung forwards then titled up to the sky where sunbeams moved in the shadows of the clouds. Goldfeather let the wind gathered within his wings to push his mass from the ground; his back created a waving motion: going up and down as each pair of wings opened to show snow white feathers and closed to boast a golden top.

"Just hang onto anythin'!" Hagrid called through the shivering of the leaves that shook in the wind of the bird's wings. Janna wrapped her legs tightly around the neck; careful not to choke the bird although her legs sank into more feathers that let out little shivers of lightning sparks as she ran her legs over them while the bird moved. To signal his flight Goldfeather let out a ululating cry, a chuisiló as Mr Winslow would have said.

Using his waving wings to shoot into the air Goldfeather left the canopy, in the low clouds thunder began to erupt from the nooks of his feathers. Each wingbeat drummed like thunder,  rumblings shivered through his body. This far beyond compared to flying on a broom, the creature moved under her with a noticeable pattern that sometimes shifted. Contrasting with a broom where you were the one in control of the flying... and Janna had no clue how to steer this bird. Goldfeather kept climbing up into the low clouds, the water vapour tickled Janna's face as they emerged out of the low cloud.

Above, the sun was shining from the horizon turning the clouds to a mellow yellow colour. Janna felt Goldfeather purr as he hovered in the air, watching the sun on the low horizon. The air was chilly up there but the sparks that Goldfeather created as he flapped his wings generated a numbing warmth. She leaned down to absorb more of the warmth, trembling to his neck, she hugged his feathers, letting the small statics sling through her fingers and hair, hearing Goldfeather's racing heart, there was a continuous minim beat when his wings flapped. Janna lifted herself as Goldfeather created a vacuum above them; a ball of lightening shot over them, the statics reached around in the air like an eager child as the ball danced over Goldfeather's head.

Suddenly Goldfeather stopped moving entirely, he let his wings rest; soon  he plummeted downwards back first, his wings were swinging loosely at his sides. As they shot down Janna felt her stomach in her mouth, she screamed as air rushed past her face, carrying her voice away, her fingers clung to the feathers but as she began to feel them pick up speed through the cloud. She felt her hands lift over her head, causing her chest to open up to feel the rush of air and the ball of lightening to tickle her finger tips. Around her the creases in the clouds had small lightenings bounce along the gaps, causing the ball of light to following them to snowball, as she lolled her head back with the whistle of wind whizzing past her ears the ball had a tail and many grabbing arms, as though the ball was made from glass that could shake the opaque arms swatted the air.

Without warning Goldfeather burst out his wings like a parachute, the feathers thrashed while cupping the air as the ball of lighting slammed down below them. Floating in a milky void Janna heard the ball crashing through a blur through the bottom of the foggy cloud, the blur could possibly be trees. A loud CRACKLE followed by a flash then a POP  released a booming shake, the water in the air to shivered hugged together as though in fear of lightening and thunder. A ripple of raindrops imploded as though radiating from Goldfeather. He arched his legs up to delicately poke a few drops with a talon, the dew on the silvery surface of the claw caused the drop to fall down, a second invisible tremor caused by that one drop falling shook the other drops that dove after the drop touched by Goldfeather.
