Dusty old lamp

¤ ¤ ¤

Mr Potter stared at Mr Winslow, who was frozen on the spot, when Janna slapped the letter onto the coffee table, making some of the Owls jump or flutter away to different perches in the living room as she grabbed her books.

Everyone watched her as she then swung the boiler room door open with her free hand shortly afterwards she disappeared  into her den, slamming the door behind her. Stomping down the steps was the only way to make Janna feel better about herself now, at least I'm not one of these steps or I'll just feel more sorry for myself, Janna told herself. She chuckled a little; she reached the bottom step she felt more calm. But as she reached her bed a rush of sadness came over her, she slammed her eyes shut, she fell onto her bed with her books and she curled into a ball, she began to cry into her gloved hands.

Upstairs Harry watched Mrs Winslow come down the stairs carrying a box which had metal plates on the wooden corners with patterns of a snake eating its tail and a horse with eight legs which intertwined in a crisscrossed pattern.

"You two had been told to explain everything to her, you didn't even tell her about her real name" Harry uttered sharply, Mr Winslow bowed his head and ran his fingers through his greying hair. Mrs Winslow held the box to her stomach when she came up to Harry who motioned to the box while still glaring at Mr Winslow, she gently unlocked the box and inside on blue velvet laid a wand of dark red wood.

"When I gave you the box it didn't have this blue velvet" Harry pointed out as he gently took the wand out, he could feel a whispering within it, beckoning him to use the wand but he resisted and stuck the wand next to his own. Harry turned back to the box and he lifted the lumpy blue velvet to find a letter concealed beneath it.

"You did hide it from her." Harry blinked "How could you two do this?" He asked looking at the blue velvet in his hands. Harry frowned, it seemed like an odd fabric, something felt off about it "This velvet, where is it from?"

The Winslow couple stayed quiet Mrs Winslow stood with Mr Winslow against the wall hugging the box to her abdomen.

Harry looked up at the two of them from the velvet, their eyes widened "Borgin and Burkes?" Harry asked, they shook their heads "The stalls in Diagon alley, the ones that sell—"

"They said it would repeal werewolves, even if they get the object it comes right back!" Mrs Winslow hissed, Mr Winslow stiffened: his eyes widened and his fists clenched. Harry thought of saying something but without a word he walked towards the Winslows, they both froze but Harry didn't do as they thought he was going to do. Instead Harry placed the velvet on the box's lid.

"I will pick her up tomorrow" Harry muttered as he walked towards Janna's door where he could hear the wind oohing through the cracks of the door. The Winslows were frozen in place, they didn't know what to do or what to think.

Below Janna stood by the air vent listening for more but the flue didn't reveal more, the door above on the wall opened, Janna looked up and saw Mr Potter, he stopped in his tracks when he got a glance of the room.

"I see it didn't go too well, sir" Janna said as she turned to Harry, he staring at the boiler room below Janna came to the foot of the creaking wooden stairs which lead up to Harry "I'm alright, if you want to know, it's not everyday you find out your life has been a lie"

"Is this where you live?" Mrs Potter asked as he came down the stairs, Janna nodded before looked around at the concrete room.

"It's all I have, it's quite a bit since the room is sound proof, you see the roof and the walls have been insulated so it stays warm, you know, the heat  comes from the boilers" Janna shrugged as she turned to look at the room, Mr Potter noticed a pile of books beneath and on the bed, an old pressed wood cupboard in the corner next to the one boiler as well and a weaved chair next to an oil drum. "Sir, what's this Hogwarts like? Have you been there?" Janna asked as she hopped onto her bed while pulling her sleeves over her wrists.

"You can call me Harry" Mr Potter said.

Janna looked up at him, frowning "Excuse me?" She asked, Harry set himself on the weaved chair by an oil drum, Janna leaned forwards to him, leaning her elbows on her knees where her legs scissored.

"You may call me Harry, sir doesn't sound all too good, makes me feel old" Harry explained, Janna nodded and she smiled lightly to his request.

"You can call me Janna then" Janna shared, Harry smiled back at her, it was hard to think she was not like Lupin—a man whom taught Harry in his third year at Hogwarts and mentored Harry for a few years but sadly Lupin died in the Second Wizarding War, leaving his son, Teddy, in the hands of Harry—

"Hogwarts...Where to start?" Harry asked himself, going to the first question Janna had asked "have you ever done something you could never explain?"

"Um... I accidentally made Mrs Hutchins' cat's fur fall off when I got chased by it once" Janna recalled, playing with her hands as she thought about it.

"Well, at Hogwarts you learn to use that magic for good," Harry then pulled out his own wand, Janna watched it in admiration "like this: terego" Harry swished his wand and a dusty old lamp began to reassemble, the swags of the lamp head sewed themselves back as the light bulb made a backwards shattering sound and then a squeaking noise as the plug for the lamp regrew a protective plastic skin as the lightbulb illuminated the dark red material.

Shortly after Harry looked at Janna who had turned her head to see what was going on, her mouth gaped open as she stared at the lamp, he retracted his wand and smiled at Janna's amazement.

"You—you learn that at Hogwarts?" Janna asked, still breathless from the amazing feat of magic she'd ever seen.

"Yes, and way more" Harry then let Janna take in the moment "you're going to go to Hogwarts tomorrow in fact"

Janna quickly turned her head to him, Harry saw excitement blaring in her eyes like fire.

"If you choose to," Harry said carefully "I'm not forcing you—"

"No, no, I want to go, if it means I can use my magic that'd be way past forcing me—y-you said I'm going tomorrow?" Janna hunted for an answer, Harry nodded, he lifted himself off his chair to look Janna straight into the eyes since he couldn't do so from the low chair and because he wasn't sure how he was going to tell her the next thing—maybe not now Harry told himself.

"Yes, I'll be picking you up at about—nine thirty, be ready with what you need" Harry nodded this caused Janna to smile, he felt himself smiling back.
