A Red Bird and No Heartbeat

¤ ¤ ¤

Janna heard Greyback pull his one shoulder through, scraping at the snow to pull his other shoulder through. In Janna's blurry vision as she opened her eyes she could make out the shape of the grey wolf, the cold blue of the wolf's eyes made Janna feel alone, she felt no-one was going to save her.

The grey wolf still struggled to pulled his arm out—he stopped when he stared up at the sky, a bright red shone in his eyes, he growled at the fireball overhead. The black werewolf watched the flaming creature dive bomb the large wolf, hitting his face, causing the wolf to howl at the hot embers that stung his eyes, the flames ceased and a shape of a peacock-like bird formed. It's red feathers swatting Greyback's snout as it tried to claw at his eyes. Greyback attempted to move back into the house while Janna snuck away, her front paw giving her a limp as she moved to the forest, she would at least be safe there.

Inside the shack Greyback was pushed by the bird into the back of the shack to the trap door. The bird flew away abruptly. He looked through the boarded window to see the wolf pup was missing, he growled with fury before knocking down a chair with a paw, causing the wood frame to shatter into splinters.

The trap door opened, he paused, smelling a young human girl, he grinned deviously stepping back to hide in the shadows, if he was not going to get Janna this time, he would get someone else.

A head of hair came through the trapdoor, the door fell back onto the dusty floor causing a shower of dust to mingle in the air. Leana pulled herself up onto the floor, dragging herself, dirtying her robes with dust. She got up, sighing as she patted her hands together to separate the dust from her skin, she soon pulled out her wand and muttered Lumos the wand tip illuminated the whole room.

Leana began to walk—stopped—she leaned down to the disturbed dust and the claw marks "what are these?" she went to the wall opposite the stairs, running her fingertips over the scratch marks. Leana jumped, pulling her hand away, she turned to the trap door, startled, she saw something shine in the moonlight, she gulped.

"Gasto" Said the form, emerald green robes shone in the moonlight "Who told you to come here?"

Greyback stayed in the shadow, he knew McGonagall was powerful, taught by Dumbledore himself, he felt a heat full his lungs.

"No one, Headmistress" Leana's face darkened, knowing she was caught "I'm looking for Black" she shone her wand on the floor and wall she had just examined "see, there was something in here, this is new, see the dust was disturbed"

McGonagall took Leana's arm "yes, yes, there are possibly ghouls in this shack, Miss Gasto, there are some spirits here I'd rather have not hurt you." McGonagall made Leana go down the ladder of the trap door "now, to my office, I have to place you for detention"

"W-what?" Leana and McGonagall disappeared, McGonagall closed the trapdoor "I've done nothing wrong!"

"You have, Miss Gasto, you are out of bed and you have left the castle, not to mention a good few threats directed at Miss Black"

As the two disappeared Greyback came from the shadow, he moved to the room with the hole in the wall... he couldn't find it. The wall had been coated in thick snow, he attempted to scratch the wall of ice but it hurt his claws, he roared, attempting to push through it with his shoulder... failing.

Outside the green of the castle, far from the Shrieking Shack was a tangle of firs, under their arms of fingers holding snow was a black creature surrounded by a patch of blood, the wolf winced as she moved her front leg, there were many splinters in the wound and her muzzle had a pinkish slit showing her raw muscle. The red bird flew over her, soon circling down to land at the black werewolf, she winced at the snow falling on her wounds after the bird lifted them during its landing, its red peacock tail dragging on the snow.

The bird chortled to the wolf, she looked at the fiery red bird  hobbling to her front paw, Janna stared as the sharp black beak of the bird shined in the moonlight... maybe it was some sort of vulture that was going to eat her. The only thing this bird did was bend his head to her leg, it leaned its eye over the wound. The watery eyes of the bird overflowed as though weeping, soon a drop landed on Janna's leg. The wolf yapped, she tried to pull her arm away but when she moved the wound stung badly, the skin sizzled, Janna watched the splinters get pushed out of her skin as the bird continued to cry onto her wound.

Soon after healing as much as her leg as he could the bird had moved to Janna's face, the muzzle was in the snow so the bird gently rolled Janna over with his beak after nudging the sharp nose under her back, showing five long gashes on the side of her body, the two wounds did not heal as well as the foreleg but the wolf was able to get up again, she shook the snow from her coat, feeling dizzy from the sensation of pain before looking at the bird.

The bird cooed at her before rubbing his beak on her cheek to get a clump of snow out of her fur, the bird hobbled slightly to only spread its great scarlet wings with one graceful flap the bird was in the air, his wing strokes disturbing the snow in the air. Janna wanted to know who sent the bird, she also wanted to get away from Greyback's senses so she trotted after the bird. Janna had never felt snow under her paws before, as she ran she enjoyed the wind in her fur, her ears pressed back on her head still heard the thrashes and shivers of the leaves under her paws and when they brushed on her coat.

Down a slope Janna rushed, her throat was cold but warm with her breathe, the sensation giving her an adrenaline rush, she never felt this before, her body was fuelled with jittering nervousness but also confident in its strides as it used a rotting fallen log to climb up the hill. On the snow Janna felt as light as a feather she felt the sudden pitter patter under her every time a paw hit the ground, as though she was running on water. Her tongue lolled out of her mouth capturing the cold air, bringing the chill into her hot body.

Soon the bird slowed down, it stopped on a stump by a clearing like a flame on a candle, the moonlight shone on the snow in the clearing, it was as though a spotlight was lighting up the area, the snowflakes in the air were like flecks of diamonds that stayed static in the strange air in. The black wolf moved into the clearing, as she stuck her paw in over the border of the clearing—above her head a ghostly hand appeared. The wolf jumped back, looking up then turning her head to see if anyone was nearby sniffing the air just in case—soon she came again, this is time throwing her whole body into the clearing... her vision was higher in the air, she looked down at her hands then her body... she was translucent, she put her hand on her chest, no heartbeat... That feels strange Janna looked behind her to see her werewolf form, looking over its shoulder like she was doing.

Lifting a hand the wolf lifted a paw, she felt quiet happy to be out of the wolf's body... the tail wagged.
