When Sorry Isn't Enough - Renesmee

"I'm sorry."
"For what?" He asks his forehead crinkling inward. I want to tell him not to worry, I want the crinkles to go away. I want to calm him. I want to -
    "Jacob."
    "He wasn't that bad."
"He made you sit in the hallway! How is that not that bad?"
"Well he could have punched me, also how do you know him?" I feel the blush spread across my face, flowing from cheeks to my neck.
"He's my - my. He's like my uncle. Except I am not related to me? My mom likes having him around but my dad hates him."
    "Why?"
"I don't know. But we are getting off task - that was bad." Alex shrugs schooching up his backpack up his back and stared off in the distance. "Alex?" I whisper nothing his sudden discomfort.
    "Yeah," he whispers.
"What are you think?" He sighs. He looks into my eyes. Like really looks in my eyes.
"I am think," he pauses. "That I might actually be okay in high school if you stay with me. Sorry, that was a little too honest." I smile taking his hand and dong my best to ignore the goosebumps running my arm and conjoining to the ache in my heart.
"You need honesty in a small town. This town was built from the bones of drama. What's your next class?"
"Art. Mr. Drumm." He still looks in my eyes as we walk down the ramp.
"Gym, Coach Clapp." We walk in silence but really its like the noise is loud enough for us to be silent. I feel this thing. Like the air push back at us as we run. Like everyone has their own little stream, but Alex and mine are connected. I snapp out of the vision.
"Cullen! Renesmee Cullen!" Calls a voice. My eyes are still fixated on Alex's.
"I think that's Coach Clapp calling your name," he mutters, his eyes wandering to my lip. The edges of my smile turn up.
"Cullen!" Alex breaks our bond and turns me around.
    "Good afternoon, Coach Clapp."
"Thank you, Wilcoff. But - ah - Mr. Drumm is awaiting so run along. I need to talk to Cullen alone." Alex leaves, his fingers brushing against my back. I miss his presence already. I want to reach out. I want to beg Coach Clapp tp let him stay. I want press my -
"Mind taking a walk with me to the office, your mother is waiting for you?" My back stiffens, I know enough not to ask questions that can't be answered. We walk in silence but not the Alex kind of silence, the awkward kind of silence. "I used to know your mother in high school. She was one hell of a student. I even remember when your mom dated your father. They were the talk of the school. And now you are here. A family legacy. How sweet?"
"Thanks." I can see my dad engulfing my mom.  Aunt Jane, Aunt Rosalie, Uncle Jasper, Uncle Emmet, Grandma Esme, Grandpa Carlisle, Grandpa Charlie, Jacob Black, Leah Clearwater, and Sam squeezed into the front office. I burst open the door. The only person who isn't there is Alice.
"What's going on?"
"Let's go Nessie," Mom's voice is quiet and somber. I nod, allowing Grandma to take my hand and lead me to the parking lot. The air was dry and cool. I glanced over my shoulder and saw Alex waving goodbye through the art class window. I waved back. That feeling was back, the feeling that left too soon I wanted to run to him. I wanted everyone to see me do it too. I wanted to take his face. I want to press my lips -. I have never seen the van that lays before me. "Let's go Nessie." Mom takes my backpack shoving it into the passenger seat, and helps me into the way back seat. The rest of the family climbs into the massive van. The rumble of the van, lulled me to sleep, but I can't. I have to know why no one is talking. I have to know where Alice is.
    "What's going on? Where's Alice?"
    "Seth and Alice are dead."
