Which sister, now?
Jamie skipped out of English, feeling practically dizzy with delight. She had already told Kelsey and Alex everything.
What delighted Jamie most of all, was that in the whole weekend she had spent with Conrad, everything was normal.
Jamie knew that no one ever really meant to, but almost everyone she had met, once she told them she had cancer, would always feel a strong feeling of pity for her.
She didn't mind the pity, she didn't especially revel in it, but she understood it. No, it wasn't the pity she despised, it was the awkward pity.
Jamie couldn't count how many friendships and relationships just died because of that awkward "oh my god, it's that girl with cancer! What a poor girl". But Jamie didn't want to be "that girl with cancer" anymore. She wanted to be Jamie Lawrence. And the great thing was, with Conrad, she was.
Jamie decided to use the bathroom before heading over to lunch.
When she opened the door, however, she discovered Roxane leaning in to kiss someone. Jamie was about to leave Roxane to her business, when she realized who it was- Conrad.
Jamie stood there for a moment, completely speechless. Before she started running. She had no idea where to, but she had to get out of there.
Somewhere behind her, she heard someone calling her name. Was it Conrad? No, why would he? He was only after Roxane. In fact, it was probably her coming to gloat and rub it in Jamie's face.
She only stopped running when she quite literately ran into Alex.
"Jamie, what's wrong? Why are you crying?" Alex asked worriedly.
"I am?" Jamie touched her cheek and was surprised to feel her finger tips moisten.
"Jamie, what happened to you?" Alex asked again.
"It's C-Conrad," she whimpered.
"Oh no, is he okay? What happened to him?"
Jamie let out a small laugh that sounded more like sob. "He's not hurt, h-he k-kissed Roxane."
Alex gave a small gasp. "No."
Jamie just nodded.
Alex stood as if glued to the spot for a few moments. Then, she took charge.
"Well, c'mon. Let's get some Chinese food into you," Alex declared.
"But the school doesn't serve Chinese and the only restaurant is too far away to be back in time," Jamie said, rather confused.
"I know," Alex said with a note of finality.
Jamie surprised Alex by not putting up ant sort of fight. It just went to show her how upset she really was. Ordinarily, Jamie would never agree to something so rebellious.
Given Alex's borderline interrogation, she already had most of the story by the time they reached the restaurant. Which meant that Alex could spend the meal calming Jamie down.
Alex did her chopstick bit. It was a reoccurring theme that the three of them had. Alex always wanted to use chopsticks, but due to a childhood injury, she never had the finger dexterity to do so. And for some odd reason, Alex attempting it always made the three of them laugh.
During the meal, Jamie had a good dose of Alex-dicone. Which is a mix of the words "Alex" and "medicine". I know, crappy, but let's move past that. Alex administered the "Alex-dicone" by singing songs that played and changing the lyrics into a funny and/or dirty meaning, flirting with the waiter intentionally badly, and some of the previously mentioned chopsticks.
By the end of it, Jamie felt marginally better.
Alex had actually planned on getting back to school in time for a couple of classes at least, but as it turns out, making her friend feel better was higher on her must-do list.
When Jamie and Alex were saying their goodbyes, Jamie hugged Alex hard. "I have no idea what I would do without you. You always know how to make me laugh in the worst of times. I love you," Jamie said, slightly teary eyed.
"Same here, girl. Call me later if you want, m'kay?"
"I will. Goodbye."
Jamie decided to take the long way home, seeing as she should be finishing up her last class by now. When got to her street, she parked at the end of it and waited for a little while, giving herself some leeway.
While she waited, she played on her phone. Scrolling through social media. She then decided to ask Kelsey for a list of homework in their couple of classes. Along with a few other class mates she knew fairly well.
Luckily she got most of the assignments she had to do. She had a good record, a few missing reports won't kill her.
Jamie saw Roxane pull into the driveway. When Roxane stepped out, she was on the phone bawling. Jamie couldn't hear what she was saying, but she was certain it had something to do with what happened in the bathroom today.
Seeing her over there, crying her fake cry made Jamie boil. Jamie could always tell if Roxane's cry was authentic or not, because she always made sure she still looked pretty if it's fake.
Not that Jamie had seen her cry that many times for something other than a broken nail, or boys. Roxane had a really good life. But there were a few times, like when their grandma had died. Roxane had been really close with her. Roxane had been fourteen at the time.
Jamie estimated enough time had past and pulled into the driveway.
When she walked into the house, Roxane was sitting at the kitchen table with Carolyn. They both looked up at Jamie as she entered the room. As soon as Roxane saw Jamie she scrunched up her face -not too tight though, it can be unflattering- and started crying all over again.
"Why don't you join us," Carolyn said in a tone that indicated it wasn't an invitation.
Jamie sat down opposite from her mother.
"It appears as if there has been a bit of conflict between you two," she started slowly.
"You could say that," Jamie replied, hoping it wasn't going where she thought it was going.
"It seems this Conrad fellow has had his eye on your sister for some time now-"
"That is not true. If he wanted Roxane he would would have been more straight forward. If he wanted her, he wouldn't have gone on a date with me.
Carolyn managed to give Jamie a look that was unimpressed and sympathetic at the same time.
"Darling, all I'm saying is that Roxy here seems to be far more engrossed in this than you are."
"No, that's not all you're saying. What else are you saying?" Jamie asked, not wanting to beat around the bush anymore.
"Honey, I'm asking you to take to high road and back off this one. This is something Roxane really wants. Besides, what about that Austen fellow? Your father says that you two really hit it off."
Yep, there it was. It went exactly where Jamie had hoped it wouldn't go.
