Chapter Six

The story of my life

I'll take her home

I drive all night

To keep her warm and time

Is frozen...

[Story of my life- One Direction]

******

I had just finished putting on makeup -some lip gloss, and mascara only, I didn't want to look like I was trying too hard- when the bell rang.

"Jamie!", Mum shouted from downstairs, "I think that's Josh, can you get the door? I'm a bit busy here!".

"Coming Mum!", I was really glad she didn't decide to get the door by her self. I wasn't sure I wanted her to meet him then, I mean, what would I have said?

Oh, Mum? This is Josh, he's my sort of boyfriend?

I went down the stairs- two at a time of course- and looked at my reflection on the floor-length mirror in the lobby.

I was wearing dark blue jeans, a peach short-sleeved top with flowers embroidered round the bottom and sleeves, and black sneakers. I let my hair down, and it went down just below my shoulders. I would have worn a dress but I decided to take Josh's advice since he knew where we were going, and unfortunately, I didn't.

"Jamie! Go on!!", I couldn't help wondering who was going on the date, Mum sounded more excited than I was.

Not that I could blame her...

"I'm out, I'm out", I bent down and pecked her cheek, "Bye Mum."

"Bye Sweety, have fun okay?", she gave me a hug, and then quickly went back into the kitchen.

Josh's car was parked in the driveway, and I couldn't help smiling when I saw him, his eyebrows were furrowed in concentration and his lips pursed as he fumbled around with the radio.

"Hi", I said, standing a bit awkwardly by his side of the car.

He smiled when he saw me, making butterflies fly around in my stomach.

"Hi. Hold on a second", he got out of the car and walked me round to the passenger's seat and then opened the door, shutting it after I slid in.

Once seated himself, he turned to me and said, "You look beautiful Jamie".

"Oh...", I said and then mentally gave myself a face palm, he just gave me a compliment and all I could say was Oh?

Smooth Jamie, really smooth.

So I tried again, blushing profusely as I did so, "I mean, thank you. You don't look too bad yourself".

And that was true, he was wearing a blue long-sleeved shirt and grey jeans, that fit just right, and knowing Josh, he was probably wearing dark coloured sneakers.

"Thank you", he replied, his cheeks turning pinkish.

Ah, so I wasn't the only one blushing today, good.

"So... where are we going?", I asked. I love surprises really, but I was also very curious.

"You'll have to wait and see, it's a surprise".

"Obviously", I muttered, a bit peeved.

He chose to ignore me though, and turned straight, taking us farther from the main road.

So we weren't going into town... we weren't watching movies then. Or going ice-skating at the mall...

After a while, I gave up guessing and decided to listen to the radio instead. It was a song I didn't recognise and Josh wasn't singing along either, maybe he didn't know it too.

"So...", I broke the silence, after what felt like forever, "Give me clues then?"

"No clues", he dead-panned.

I folded my arms across my chest, probably looking like a five year old but not caring, "Fine".

"Come on, don't be like that", Josh said, trying to keep a straight face, but failing miserably, "We're almost there, just one more turn, aha!".

And behold, we were at a farm.

Yes, you heard me right, "Bluefields farm", it said in the sign.

"A farm? We're going to have a date. At a farm.", I honestly couldn't believe what I was seeing.

I couldn't help thinking, what are we gonna do here? Milk cows?

"Yupp, a farm. Come on, Dylan and his wife Rose can't wait to meet you, they're the owners by the way.", he got out of the car and shut the door behind him, and then came round to my side and opened my door for me. I was still trying to process... what was happening.

"Ok, give me a minute", I came out, and followed him to the farm house, where a black haired man, probably in his late 30s opened the door with a smile. His smile was some-what lopsided and there were tiny laugh-lines around his eyes.

He stuck out his hand and said, "Hi, I'm Dylan, you must be Jamie, we've been expecting you, come on in, my wife's out back".

"Thank you...", I replied, with a smile mirroring his. His smile was contagious.

I stepped in, Josh right behind me, and followed Dylan to the back.

I couldn't stop the tiny gasp that escaped from my lips when we were outside.

The place was HUGE.

It was a picture perfect farm house, and my fingers were itching to paint it.

There was a large paddock with cows grazing in it, and fields of what I thought was corn, complete with a red tractor. And a really cute sheep dog running around in the field. And chickens, there were chickens everywhere.

"Hi", a soft voice brought me back to the present, it belonged to a tall woman with brown hair that looked sort of red when the sun hit it at the right angle. "You must be Jamie, welcome to our farm, I'm Rose".

She smiled from beside her husband and I smiled back, feeling more relaxed than I ever did in the midst of strangers, "Hello, thank you for having us."

"Oh, it's nothing, we'll be happy to have you anytime, hopefully there'll be a next time.", and then she turned to Josh, "Oh wow, look at you Josh, I swear it's like you grow three inches taller every time I see you". Her eyes were wide and she genuinely looked shocked.

Josh laughed and wrapped her in a hug, "It's good to see you too Rose".

They then went on to explain to me that Rose was Josh's cousin from his mum's side, and that he called her the day before to ask if we could go to their farm for our date, and she said ok, even though it was on short notice.

Dylan and Rose took us round the farm house and then led us to the stable, where Josh and I got a horse each. I chose a shy looking mare called Sugarplum, and he picked a black as night stallion called Hurricane.

I couldn't help smiling at the difference between the names.

We saddled the horses and walled them out into the field, and got on our horses. And then decided to race.

Josh won twice, and I won the last race, although I suspected he let me win, not that I was complaining.

We were out on the field for two hours, racing, feeding chickens (I actually fed chickens!), and rounding up the cows (luckily we didn't milk them). So we decided to head back in.

We met Rose in the kitchen, baking the most beautiful Apple pie I'd ever seen, with Dylan helping (or rather, making a mess).

She put them in the oven, and I helped make salad as we waited.

"So, I hope you had fun Jamie", Rose said, as she wrapped up the salad tray with cling film.

"Oh, yes, thank you so much for letting us come.", I said sincerely.

"Oh don't thank me Jamie. It's nothing really, Josh is one of my favourite people- don't tell Kyle- and you're obviously his favourite person, so it's no big deal. I'll be glad to have you next time", she said with a wink.

I blushed and Josh laughed nervously by my side, "Thanks Rose", he said, a bit sarcastically and she laughed.

We ate the pie (it tasted so even better than it looked) and salad, cleaned up, said thanks and goodbye, with a promise to come back next time, and headed out because it looked like it was going to rain, and we didn't want to get stuck in the rain.

********

"So, I'm guessing that was the best date ever", Josh said, in a matter-of-fact tone, making me roll my eyes.

"That will be hard to tell, coz it's the only date I've been on so far", I replied, my tone matching his.

we were in the car, going back home, I still couldn't judge if we were close yet or not.

"Really? That was your first date? Lucky you then, coz I just keep getting better in the date department", he was smirking looking all smug and self-pleased, and I couldn't help rolling my eyes again.

At that rate, my eyes were gonna get stuck at the back of my head.

"Just coz you're my first that doesn't mean you'll be my last. And who said I enjoyed it anyway, I might not want to go on another even".

"Touché, touché", he mumbled, and I couldn't help feeling pleased with my self now.

It had started drizzling when we left the farm and it was soon pouring, so I turned on the heater coz it was getting a bit chilly.

"Great, it's raining", I muttered under my breath. But apparently, Josh heard me coz he looked at me from the corners of his eyes and said,

"I still can't believe you don't like the rain. It's beautiful, amazing even. It's... life".

"Sure, sure", I said. Making it known I didn't agree but not really wanting to argue about it.

Josh got it and didn't comment further. Although he did raise an eyebrow and shake his head at me.

The trees whizzed on by as he sped along the almost empty street. I checked the speedometer just to make sure he wasn't over speeding and to my relief, he wasn't.

Some song was playing on the radio, but the volume was down low, it was ok for me though, I liked the near silence.

We got to the turn that led to my house, but instead of taking it, Josh sped past.

"Um, Josh? You missed the turn, my house's that way", I pointed out. Breaking the silence.

"I know. I want to show you something", he simply said, continuing on his way.

"Oh... But it's raining".

What was he possibly going to show me?

"Yupp", he replied, popping the 'p' at the end but not really elaborating.

We got to an empty field and he parked the car. Then turned around to look at me as he said,

"We're here"

I scrunched up my face, what did he mean 'we're here'? There was nothing there but green grass.

"Um, you mean nowhere?", I asked, I was really confused.

"Yes and no, we're here to dance, so come on out", he was already sliding out of the car when he said that.

Dance? Really now? Was he crazy??

"Dance?! It's raining!!", I really couldn't believe he wanted to dance now. Josh was really strange sometimes.

"I can see that", he replied, his eyes sparkling, as he peered down at me through the other side of my closed window, "Don't tell me you're afraid of the rain".

I looked at him with narrowed eyes, trying to see if he was joking or not.

Maybe he'd lost it...

"I'm not afraid", I finally said, crossing my arms over my chest and not moving an inch from my comfortable and dry seat in the car.

"Good, I would have still made you come out and dance with me anyway.", I glared at him and he laughed, raising his hands up defensively.

"What? Fears are meant to be conquered. Now come out, I'm getting soaked out here".

"Good", I mutttered, "You had the crazy idea to go stop us in the middle of nowhere and ask to dance. When it's bumming raining"

"Ok then, we'll just stay here until you agree to dance with me... or I catch a terrible cold and die". He said that last part in a self-pitying tone as he leaned against the car, and I rolled my eyes again for about the hundredth time that day. He was in for a surprise.

We stayed that way, until he started tapping irregularly on my window. I hated it when people tapped on stuff, and I knew I'd feel really guilty if he did catch a cold, so I gave in and sighing, said,

"Fine. Can you please stop that? We'll dance. But if anyone sees us, you're the crazy one not me."

I got soaked as soon as I stepped out and I mentally started cursing, it would take hours to fix my hair.

Josh bowed, and held out his hand, "May I have this dance?".

I held back mine, saying, "But there's no music".

He raised an eyebrow at me, and said, "We'll dance to a silent tune, one that's only heard in our heads."

I just gave him a look. We were already out dancing in the rain, that was crazy enough for me.

"Fine, hold on a second", he said, fumbling around in his pocket, then he brought out a shiny black object- his phone- and scrolled down and clicked on a song, and then put it back in his pocket.

That done, he smiled and said, "Ok, let's try again. Dance with me Jamie?".

I couldn't help smiling back as I put my hand in his, just as Story of my life, by One Direction came on.

"Really? We're going to dance to this? I mean I love this song but, oh...", he cut me off by lifting me off the ground and placing my feet on his.

I blushed, suddenly feeling like I was five again.

Twirling around on the empty field, with the rain falling around us, its sound in the back ground sort of complimenting the song, I began to see why Josh said rain was amazing. And I actually started falling in love with it myself.

"...story of my life, I'll take her home, I'll drive all night, to keep her warm and time is frozen", Josh sang along as he held my hand above my head and spun me round.

The dance steps were simple and easy, and after a while, I stepped off his feet and started doing it on my own, and laughing too coz I was enjoying myself so much.

The rain, even the song, just blended into the background, and it was just Josh and me.

The tips of his ears were poking out through his wet hair, and his hair stuck to his forehead in a really cute way, and he was grinning with twinkles in his eyes.

He just looked...beautiful. And I wished time was truly frozen so I could live in that moment forever.

I wished I at least had a camera then, so I could take a picture but I didn't, so I tried to commit it all to memory.

Every smile, all the tiny crinkles that appeared around his eyes when he laughed, the way his hair came down and stuck to his forehead, even the sound of his voice as he sang and laughed.

I wanted to remember it all someday when I was old. I wanted to remember this crazy boy that danced with me in the rain and made me start loving it.

******

Aww! I wanna go dancing in the rain too!!

:(

Although I doubt it would be to Story of my life. Don't get me wrong, I LOVE the song. In case you're wondering though, that doesn't mean I'm a 1D fan. I just listen to whatever I like. A little 1D here, Imagine Dragons there, maybe some 1Republic, and Taylor Swift, and Lorde, and Florida Georgia Line, and... anything really. As long as it sounds good to me. :D

Anyway...

Hi!!

I sincerely hope you liked this chapter, (you did? Great, now go on and vote ;). ) I tried to make it as...captivating as I could, I know I'm not there yet, but I really hope someday I get to write in such an entrancing way that people never get tired of reading my stories.

And... that was not your typical date, I know. But I like a little...different sometimes. It shows you actually thought about it. (Right?)

Writing about apple pie's made me kind of hungry for apple pie. I just love apple pie, it's definitely my favourite kind of pie...

And yeah, I'm sure you've guessed already, the song of the day is "Story of my life" by One Direction. I don't know why, even though I've listened to it countless times I still love it (seriously, I even hear it in my dreams).

And today's dedication is to...

@AnOther_Planet for voting for my story, "Falling" and this story too (and not just one vote each, I was so happy, I was on Cloud 9 really), thank you so much. I really, really appreciate that.

And...

That's all folks! ;)

XOXO- Zara

P.S don't forget to VCAF, Votes especially count here on Wattpad, it helps the story to be...discovered by people. So please, don't hold back (I'm doing the puppy dog face).

Bye!! ^_^
