Prince Jack
You carried out a bucket of feed to where your chickens roamed. You scattered the food around on the ground and watched as the chickens happily ran up to the food. You listened to their happy clucks and sighed.
"Why can't I be as happy as them?" You thought as you trudged back to the house.
You opened the door and a sweet smell wafted your nose. You turned your attention towards the kitchen and saw your mother in there.
"What are you making that smells so good, momma?" You asked as you walked towards the kitchen.
"Apple pie. We finally got sugar. Your brother was able to exchange something in the market for it. Did you-" she stopped her sentence when she saw you still had your dirty boots on. "Take those boots off, missy! I've already told you multiple times to take them off at the door!"
"Sorry. I forgot." You took your boots off and pushed into your room. You saw your little brother sitting on his bed that was next to yours. He looked sad.
"Hey, what's wrong, Peter?"
"I just wish we had a better life, sis. I wish it was easier. Everyone else in the kingdom seems to be better off than we are. It's not fair." This eight-year-old was speaking your mind.
"Hey, don't worry about that. The other people are complete snobs. I'd rather be poor and have character, wouldn't you?"
"I guess."
And with that, you left the room. You came out to see a carriage approaching your little farm. It looked like a royal carriage. About ten men on horses trotted around it. The one in the front tooted a trumpet, announcing their presence.
"Mom?" You called in confusion.
"What now, (Y/N)?" She replied, annoyed.
"There's someone here."
"Is it Mr. Peterson?" He was the local farmer who helped your family immensely.
"No.It looks like royalty."
"Royalty? At our house? You must be pulling my leg." She said as she finally joined you and watched in awe as the carriage came to a halt.
"Oh. My. God. It is royalty," she breathed.
You just nodded and folded your arms across your chest. You watched as a few horsemen dismounted and opened the door of the carriage. First, the king came out. You only recognized him by the large crown and the descriptions you had heard by some of the townsfolk. But, he wasn't alone. He had brought his son? You assumed that was who he was. He stepped out and you stopped breathing for a second. He ran a hand through his brown hair that was dyed green on the fringe. He readjusted his crown on his head and followed his dad up to your doorstep. You mother nudged your arm, snapping you out of your daydream. "Drool later, (Y/N)," she said with a smirk. You shook your head and went into the kitchen. "Make some tea while I greet our guests, and for the love of all that is holy, go put on something presentable." You looked down to realize that you were in your ragged clothes you wore to work on the farm. You quickly ran into your room and changed and grabbed your brother. You caught him up to speed as you boiled a kettle of water to make tea. Soon, the king entered your home while your mother acted like a frantic hostess. "Please have a seat," she motioned towards the couch. The king and prince took a seat while the horsemen stood close by. You eyed the prince from the kitchen. You looked up and down his body and found delight. His lips curled into a smile when he noticed your staring. He gave you a slight wave and you ducked down behind the counter, blushing. You told your brother to join them in the living area while you tried to hide your blush. You peeked back over the counter, and to your dismay, the prince wasn't sitting on the couch anymore. You searched the living area frantically, trying to find him. Suddenly, you felt a hand on your shoulder. You jumped and almost let out a yelp. You slowly turned around to see the prince standing behind you, chuckling at you. You felt blush flush your cheeks as you slowly stood up.
"I didn't mean to scare you," his Irish accent sent your heart racing.
"Uh, it's okay. Sorry for being a total creep."
He chuckled. "I don't mind the attention, especially from such a beautiful person like you."
You felt the blush flush you cheeks again. He smiled at this. You two stared into each other's eyes for a minute. You looked into his eyes with wonder. His eyes were a crystal blue, something you imagined the ocean to look like. They sparkled when he smiled, and you found it hard to pull yourself out of the trance they sent you in. Suddenly, it hit you. You didn't even know why they were here.
"If you don't mind me asking, Your Highness, why are you here?" He chuckled at the "Your Highness".
"You can call me Jack, and we're here to invite you to a ball we're holding at the castle. My father gets very lonely since my mother passed, and he likes the company. Plus he wants me to find a princess." He winked at you. Blush hit your cheeks again. They were having a ball?! You had never been to one. Would your mother let you go? You didn't even have anything to wear.
"Okay," you simply replied.
"I hope to see you there, it'd be a damn shame to not get the chance to dance with you." Wow, he was charming.
"Well, I'll see what I can do. I may have to rearrange my schedule. When is it?" You smirked at your joke.
He smiled back. "Next Friday, my lady."
You two smiled at each other until you were interrupted by the king telling his son it was time to leave. You gave him one last smile and wave as he got into the carriage.
------
You collapsed on your bed after a long and tiring day of farm work. Your thoughts had been on Jack all day. Why did he like me? I'm just a poor girl. Why would he want me? Thoughts clouded your mind until your brother's voice pulled you away.
"I saw you with the prince," he shot you a huge grin. "I approve."
"What? Woah, you're drawing conclusions."
"Am I? At dinner when mother even mentioned his name you blushed really hard." Sh*t.
"Okay, maybe I find him attractive."
"That's what I thought." He smiled and turned off the light in the room.
