The shaking hand of a crying 21 year old girl named Pooja held the cellphone and its green case with glitter covered flowers decorated from top to bottom. She waited patiently running a free hand through her dark red locks of wavy hair. She bit her bottom lip trying to hold back tears as she paced back and forth in front of her room window. Finally, the person she wanted to hear the most answered with a lazy "Baby?"
She immediately dropped her hand from her hair and started crying. The voice on the other line cleared their throat and simply demanded a reason for her tears.
"It's over Kabir " She sobbed.
"No it's not. Dhruv is just being a jerk. You two will be back together in an hour" Kabir offered his comfort as he sat up in his bed flipping on the lamp beside his bed.
"No" She sobbed. "It's really over" She insisted wiping her eyes but the tears flowed even more.
"Baby," Kabir started but Pooja interrupted. "Come over and hug me" She commanded.
Kabir ran his fingers through his long strands of black hair before it feel against his back again. His grayish-blue eyes stared at the time on his phone.
2:00 AM.
"Please" Pooja added after the pause of silence.
"Of course" He simply replied before hanging up. A low sigh drifted from his lips as he slid into a random blue shirt and didn't bother to take off the green and black stripped pajama pants. This would be the sixth time Pooja and Dhruv broke up. And he knew there would be even more. If she could just see who really cared about her then Dhruv would've been gone since the first break up.
He climbed out of the window quietly as possible trying not to wake his sleeping parents. All least he thought they were sleep. As he made his way across the green, cut lawn in his house slippers his parents watched him through their bedroom window. They knew where he was headed so why make a fuss about it?
Kabir turned on Pooja's block and made his way to the third house with rose bushes covering the front lawn and a Audi A7 sitting in the white pavement of the drive way.
He made his way past the car and towards the side of the house where Pooja's room was. He found her sitting by the window with tears flowing like a leaking faucet.
"Baby?" He said softly making her turn and stand up and make way for him to come in. Kabir pulled himself up and into her room in just two minutes and closed the window behind him. When he turned around she promptly wrapped her arms around him crying into his shirt. He returned the hug tightly and whispered, "What a jerk. Can I beat the crap out of him now?"
She shook her head no. "I still think I love him"
"Yeah I know already" He mumbled planting a kiss on her forehead. "So tell me. What happened?"
They sat on her bed, her head in his lap as he braided her hair and listened to her go on about Dhruv. He nodded and made small comments.
"He said he found himself accidently attracted to Kavya when they first met. They shared more likes then we do and plus he never really liked 'hot girls." She drawled.
"What he's saying is you are too good for him, your likes are classier and you're not a stupid chick" Kabir stared down at her as she looked up with her hazel eyes glossy and puffy from crying.
"How come it's your voice I hear and not Dhruv's?"
"Cuz he's a douchebag" Kabir leaned down pressing his nose to hers and smiling.
She giggled as if he had tickled her and he leaned back up satisfied with the change in her feelings he had made.
He glanced at the green clock on her nightstand.
2:40 AM
He yawned looking down at her and spoke softly and sweetly. "It's past our bedtime young lady"
"But I don't want to go to sleep!" She pretended to whine as she plopped up from his lap pouting.
"I'll tell you about the headless monster under your bed waiting to bite your toes off and make a milkshake out of your eyes" He smiled excitedly. She gasped and replied "Don't have kids. You'll scare them and they'll run away from you forever"
"Remind me" He chuckled softly as her phone buzzed from under the pillow. She quickly threw the pillow back hitting Kabir dead in the face. She answered the phone will an angry "What".
Kabir removed the pillow staring at her with his eyebrows arched.
"Yes I'm mad!" She yelled quietly.
"I don't ever want to get back with you"
"Don't even start Dhruv"
"No"
"Don't say it"
"No, I don't love you"
"I said I don't"
"You promise?"
"Fine, I'll take you back"
Kabir's heart sunk and he rolled his eyes. He knew it. She and Dhruv would be back together in an hour and it was 3:00.
"I love you more!" She blushed before hanging up. She stared at an angry Kabir who stared back.
"Whaaat?" She dragged watching him angrily climb off the bed sliding into his shoes and making his way for the window.
"Kabir What's wrong?" she followed him. He lifts the window up before turning to her. "Nothing. Nothing's wrong at all!" He growled.
"I just hope you and Dhruv live happily ever after and stop pulling me into your quick break ups" He raised two fingers on each hand indicating the invisible quotation marks.
Pooja placed a hand on her hip. "I'm sorry Kabir, I really am"
Kabir double blinked. "No. No you're not sorry. You don't even know how I feel" He placed a finger to his heart.
Rage grew in Pooja and she blurted, "What? Shouldn't you be happy we're back together? I love him! How do you feel? You never really told me how you felt about Dhruv or me together. Tell me. Explain to me why you're so upset"
"No baby. I'm not upset. I'm waaaay pass upset" He shook his head. "Dhruv? I hate him. I hate how he uses you. You may not see it but I do. He uses you like girls use make-up. He wears you for a few but then washes you away."
Pooja pushed kabir's shoulder urging him to leave. "GO, I DON'T WANT TO HEAR THIS" She shook her head.
"See Pooja ?" Kabir called her by her first name for the first time with a smirk. "You only want to hear the good qualities about dating Dhruv"
"I said leave" She shoved him harder. "I don't want to see you. Ever. Again" She fragmented.
"You didn't let me explain how I feel about you" He stood his ground folding his arms and staring down at her.
"I don't want to hear it!" She cried.
"I think you do" Kabir placed both hands on her shoulders and leaned in. "You do want to hear how I feel. And how difficult it's been to keep my feelings inside when you're the only one I desire. That's right," He said after her mini gasp. "I love you"
He leaned up releasing her to stare at her with her hand taped to her mouth and tears threatening to flow.
"Oh...Kabir" She started. "I-I..didn't know"
"Of course you didn't." He scoffed.
"I-I-I'm sorry."
"Sorry enough to decide?" He raised a perfect black eyebrow.
"What?" She asked realizing what he said as he pulled out his cellphone.
"If you truly love Dhruv and will forever stay with him, then erase your number from my contacts" He paused taking her hand and shoving his phone into her palm. "If you love me and you realize how much happier..well happy I can make you then call him and break up for good" Kabir's facial expression softened.
Pooja bit her bottom lip wiping her eyes as she stared down at the black phone.
"I can't" She replied.
"Then I can just leave forever"
"No" She clung at his short sleeved shirt. "No"
"Then decide, please"
She sighed flipping the phone open her heart racing along with kabir's. Her heart raced for what she couldn't believe she was doing and his, worried about her choice.
She glided her fingers over the keyboard dialing Dhruv's number. When she raised the phone to her ear kabir's stone face was lifted and he smiled grabbing her wrist and motioning the phone to his ear.
"Who's this?" Dhruv asked curiously.
"Your ex-girlfriend's new improved boyfriend! Don't call Pooja, don't text her and don't breathe while someone mentions her name. You will NEVER hurt her ever again! Sleep tight, don't let the bed bugs bite" He shut the phone shut staring at a gapping Pooja.
"I know. I rock" He rolled his eyes pushing her chin up to connect her lips together. She smiled as he pressed their smiling lips against each other's. She closed her eyes releasing the phone as he released her wrist and slid his hand around her waist pulling her closer. His lips were soft and sweet against hers and her lips were heavenly and smooth against his.
After a moment they pulled away and Pooja questioned, "Where have you been?"
"Right in front of you baby" He shrugged closing in for another kiss...
