What He Told Her by Rosa950
Shortened Summary: Conflicted, Hilda ventures into Nimbasa's amusement park in order to clear her mind, only to come face-to-face with the center of her struggle.
Review: Based on the video game duology, this oneshot follows Hilda as she works through her internal battle of uncertainty with Team Plasma's leader N. Rather than the standard dialogue of the games, readers get to see further insight into the protagonist's thoughts on the events while keeping it a unique twist on this cutscene. Although it does not offer a full novel on these games, this oneshot does cover a lot in a short span of time while not being over-prosey and interesting. Descriptions are concise and easy to follow, showing that simplicity can yield the greatest of results. One of my favorite aspects of this story is how it shows both sides of the story. Hilda has her say, but so does N. Rather than making the antagonist's motivations unclear, Rosa chose to explain each side in a way that keeps to the perspective of Hilda while also giving voice to the other characters.
On his side, N uses his sudden declaration to test Hilda. While we do not see the enrity of the story, most readers who know this region's events will recognize many throwbacks to the long standing debate of the two characters. Despite being more focused on the internal conflict Hilda is having throughout the story, the story is still Pokémon-centric since the ideals vs truth theme is still being explored. Even though this story lacks a romance subplot (despite the many fanfics written on this very scene in a romantic light) this story separates itself from its video game counterparts through its unique humor, character development, exploration of old themes in intriguing ways, and thought provoking points. Given its short size, accomplishing as much as it does is amazing and a must read for any gen five fan—even shippers (no matter what side you are on).
