Review: Although it was the longest short story I read for the PWAs this year, it didn't feel any longer than the others with few grammatical errors. The first chapter was a bit confusing to read at first, but was clarified the further in I got. Reading from the perspective of a lesser known character was cool, as was the way transgenderism is explored and the relationships between the characters. This is one I won't go into detail with too much due to how much more intense it is if you don't know the ending, but it's one I'd recommend, especially for those who don't know anyone who's transgender or don't understand how that person thinks. While it is not the main theme of the story, it is a subplot of sorts in how its written. The only subplot I didn't think was well fleshed out is the hints at romance between the two main characters.
Other than that I found myself absorbed in the story and loved the contest aspects of it. It could benefit from having more time to delve more into the main protagonists history, but overall it was an enjoyable read. The battles and combinations were really cool and well described while the tension of the protagonist added to these scenes. Even if you're not a fan of contests, read this one. The contest parts are short and not the main part of the story, though they do enhance it. Its main focus are the relationships between the human cast and the humor and realistic depictions of respiratory struggles make for a rare, but enjoyable read.
