In Your Shadow by UnisonRaider
Shortened Summary: Chosen mainly for their inherent beauty, Ninetales are bred for those who enjoy showing off their Pokémon in ways outside of Gym Challenges, though they can be powerful opponents as well. Driven apart since birth due to these conflicting views, Vulpix twins must decide to either brave the gap between them or risk losing each other forever.
Review: Despite only having a few parts and being told from a Pokémon's perspective, this story explores so many aspects of the Pokémon world that I found myself sad when it ended. Ninetales is one of my favorite Pokémon so naturally I was drawn to this story immediately, but I was not prepared for the journey it would take me on. The sibling interactions were so real I was hooked further just to know what happens to these twin Vulpix, one of whom is chosen by their Trainer for contests for his beauty while his sister is cast aside for being too "plain". While there is no outside conflict or any action scenes other than the midpoint, the author does an excellent job at setting up an internal conflict within the main Ninetales's POV as well as the external one between the twins.
It does a good job at showing the Trainer when needed, while focusing on the two Pokémon rather than making it a Trainer-centric story. That said, it is not without its flaws. While the battles are cool, they could've been more extensive to further develop our main protagonist. Also, the chapter where she takes over the battle portion of the contest could've included more on how they convinced their Trainer to allow it. I did enjoy how the girl came to understand both her Ninetales better, but even though it was heartwarming, I felt irked that she never considered training both her Pokémon equally or even seemed to talk to her other Ninetales. I felt she could've been a more developed character too, but I do understand it having to remain on the Pokémon since it is a short story. I really enjoyed the contest scenes, but wish it had more to them. Like a full scene of her first battle in one, especially given the lead up it had for Rhine. However, although it does have some weaker areas, it was a very enjoyable read overall and one I'd recommend to any Coordinator/Performer fans or any fans of Pokémon-centric stories or anyone who has a sibling (or even those who don't but enjoy those dynamics).
