Gates of Time by ragnarok-

Shortened Summary: After witnessing her brother's murder, Ada struggles with depression. Upon a chance encounter with Celebi, Ada follows the time traveler with only the slightest glimmer of hope left to reverse her brother's demise. However, what if the person you once thought was worth the world is the cause of your deepest pain?

Review: Stories such as this one make me wish the Pokémon world was our world, even for how it almost gets destroyed every other day. Although this tale did not live up to my expectations, it came pretty close in some areas. I enjoyed the mentor-pupil relationship between Ada and Raven, and the complex sibling relationship we get between her and her brother. This author is good at writing 3D characters, although I do still wish we could have had more history to add to the friendships between Ada, Silver and Gold. I also did not find the romantic one to be very realistic or shippable (come on, every fangirl knows that's a word). We're thrown into these relationships without much history or scenes that make you care for these relationships or root for the romantic aspects.

However as this could be easily fixed with a few dialogue or short scenes (I'd personally love to see a scene with the Ada and Gold teaming up to tease Silver for some past event we don't see; plus it'd add to the shippability of those two), I could overlook those minor details for the main aspects of the story. I really enjoyed the complexity of the sibling relationship as the story progresses. We come to understand who her brother is more as she does, and even though I did not care really if he died (harsh as that sounds), I could put myself in Ada's shoes and felt what she did even though readers may not care that he was nearly killed until the end. There's a good plot twist that I won't give away, but it's different than other Pokémon fanfics in how it sets up the antagonist. There was good action and suspense sections that had me hooked, and I really enjoyed how much we get on Raven's history as the story progresses.

The climax itself was pretty intense but felt short. We get the two legends of Johto fighting and a well done section of Ada's thoughts and feelings on it that does not distract from the story, but the scene where her two friends are battling was almost too short. I didn't have time to get scared for their safety long enough to be on the edge of my seat as they fought. Other than needing to be possibly added to so the suspense is increased, it was an interesting addition to the story but jarred me some since the story felt like it was only from Ada's perspective (through third person limited). While it could have had some grammatical errors, I don't recall any and it didn't affect my reading experience. All in all, this is one I would love to reread someday (especially if it was edited a bit more) and would recommend for any Johto fans or people who love the possibilities that come with time travel (looking at you Doctor Who fans).
