The Pond

Elizabeth's grandmother waited patiently on the breezy porch working on crocheting her blanket. She

didn't even look up when her daughter pulled up in the car with her 12 year old granddaughter. Finishing

two more stitches, Elizabeth's grandmother finally looked up and smiled,"Honey!"

Never in her life had Elizabeth heard her real name spoken by her grandmother the only name she ever heard of was Honey, or some other nickname, Elizabeth had slowly grown used to this.

The thing Elizabeth most looked forward to when she came to visit her grandmother in the summer, was the pond. The pond was probably the most beautiful sight in the whole wide world, at least to Elizabeth when the sun rose in the morning the rays would shine brightly on the glass like water. Elizabeth also loved her grandmother's cooking, not to mention her molasses cookies.

Elizabeth sat by the open screen less window gazing without thought at the glimmering pond. She  couldn't wait till morning. It seemed like a snap of your fingers when night fell and the moon rose over the small little cabin in the woods.behind the woods. The sun shone over the pond and Elizabeth's eyes snapped open.

Rushing down the ladder from the cozy loft Elizabeth tiptoed silently outside into the brisk morning. As Elizabeth's toes made contact with the grass blanketed in dew droplets she smiled and ran out to the pond.

Gazing out over the still water Elizabeth looked up into the Heavens the  sun making her face glow a soft pale gold. Looking back down to the earth Elizabeth spotted a smooth rock perfect for skipping, bending over her hand entered the pond making a ripple on the glass-like water.

Her hand encasing the smooth rock Elizabeth felt a pull coming from the rock. Trying to pull back Elizabeth felt the pull become stronger, pulling harder against the invisible force Elizabeth felt her feet come away from the ground. She felt herself sink into the water.

As soon as she entered she exited and was completely dry. Looking down she saw the floor of this place was a bright lime green grass combined with moss the sky was as blue-green as the water. She didn't realize, of course, that she was actually looking up into the pond. Elizabeth looked back down again and smiled taking a step on the soft pillow-like moss and grass. She looked around there was huge trees with white bark and pink, purple, blue, green, yellow, and all the colors you can imagine for the leaves. A huge variety of birds and butterflies and many different animals that you could only dream of were wandering peacefully about. Elizabeth was just a few feet off the dark brown foot path noticing this she took a few wary steps to the path to be sure that she didn't get hurt.

"Honey!" came a very faint voice in the distance, Elizabeth looked up at the watery sky listening to the voice. "Honey!" Elizabeth frowned knowing it was her grandmother.

"You have a choice." A woman's soft and luring voice came from behind a tree with deep deep purple leaves.

Elizabeth turned around to face the woman, she took in her appearance. A flowing white gown with flowing sleeves and a low neckline, her hair was dark brown and wavy falling to her knees. A silver diadem rested in her hair, with an emerald jewel dominating the whole appearance, her voice was as soft as the breeze and her lips were in a heart shape and a dark red. As Elizabeth looked closer she could tell that her ears were ever so slightly pointed.

"You're an elf." Elizabeth stated.

Chuckling the woman said, "Yes, I am an elf." Her long black lashes fluttered beautifully,

"You have a choice. You can either stay, or go back to your grandmother."

Elizabeth looked at the elf, even with a soft voice it was powerful and you wanted to obey every word, and said. "Miss. er... Elf?"

"My name is Aditi meaning free." Aditi said smiling.

'Miss. Aditi, what do you mean by I have a choice?"

"You can either stay here where you stay young and never die, or you can go back to the world above."

Elizabeth looked at Aditi and tore her eyes off of her and gazed around the underwater world, looking back at Aditi she asked,"What would you do?"

"I would say stay." Aditi whispered and stared at Elizabeth with her violet eyes daring her to say no.

Elizabeth looked at Aditi and heard the distant, "Honey!" Elizabeth looked around the small wonderful world. Aditi had this thing around her that she felt that she couldn't say 'no' as easy at  it should be, she just couldn't.

"I-I-I will... stay." Elizabeth decided.

A sudden strong gust of wind came and swept around Elizabeth, different colored leaves swirled around her and when the wind died down Elizabeth was standing in a beautiful dress.

Her dress was a short flowing dress with light purple at the neckline and darker purple at the hem, Elizabeth was sleeveless and golden buttons connecting pale purple strings over her shoulders. Her hair, which was to her shoulder, was now to her waist in a wonderful waterfall of blonde curly hair. A golden diadem appeared on her brow and a amethyst was resting between her blonde eyebrows. Looking up at Aditi she asked, "How?"

"When someone decides to join us in this underwater world they become an elf." she reached out and tucked a lock of hair behind her ear and felt the pointed tip of her ear. Elizabeth's hand flew to her ears and she felt them gently, smiling broadly she looked at Aditi and said,"What do we do?"

Aditi smiled at Elizabeth and said,"First. Your name is no longer Elizabeth, 'tis Ada."

"Ada." Elizabeth whispered, not feeling herself falling into her spell. "I like that!"

"Well then Ada my happy girl lets go and visit the king and hope he accepts you."

Elizabeth looked at Aditi and felt a little intimidated,"When do we leave?"

Aditi smiled at her and Aditi and Ada walked down the dirt pathway to the kings grand palace hand in hand.
