"What are you gonna do about the water monster?" Ned asked as soon as Peter shut the door.
"Nothing. It's dead. Besides, that Mysterio guy's all over it." Ned was looking at him in confusion and Peter walked towards the bathroom. "I just wanna spend some time with MJ. We were talking about Paris, and," he shrugged, "I think she really likes me."
Ned smiled. "That's nice. Reminds me of when Betty and I first fell in love. I had just finished my fruit cobbler, right, and-" he abruptly cut off and fell onto the bed. Peter stared at him in shock, toothbrush in his mouth.
"You're a very difficult person to contact, Spider-Man."
Peter whipped around, toothbrush still in his mouth, to see Nick Fury sitting in a chair, gun in hand. Evie stood next to him in her suit, giving him a look. He took out his toothbrush.
"You're Nick Fury." He looked at Ned again. "...and you just shot Ned."
"It's a mild tranquilizer. He'll be all right. So good to finally meet you. I saw you at the compound when you were unconscious, but I figured that was a bad time to exchange numbers."
Peter chuckled nervously. "No, that would've been really inappropriate."
"That's what I just said."
"Right."
"The important thing is, you're here. I tried to bring you here. You avoided me, and now you're here. What a coincidence."
Peter leaned forward. "Wait. Was this a coincidence?" Evie sighed.
Fury ignored the question. "I know almost everything. But then suddenly, a giant alien shows up, my team disappears, and a high school kid is dodging my calls. But here's what I do know." He set down a small holographic projector that showed the earth, and Evie walked over to stand by Peter. "A week ago, a village in Mexico was wiped out by a cyclone." The projector changed to show the village while also projecting small, soundless videos of the storm. "Witnesses say that cyclone had a face."
Ned snored loudly and the man turned and gave him an exasperated look. "Three days later, a similar event in Morocco. A village was-"
There was a knock on the door. Fury aimed his gun as Mr. Harrington walked in. Evie pressed against the wall. "Just making the rounds, see if anyone needs any counseling after today's traumatic events."
"No, we'll be okay. We're fine. Thank you," Peter said quickly. Fury's finger was on the trigger.
"Great because I'm-I'm not qualified to actually-" he spotted Ned and lowered his voice to a whisper. "Oh, he's passed out. I'm not qualified to do it anyway, so good night." He closed the door.
"That was my teacher. Sorry about that," Peter said nervously. "You were saying?"
Fury lowered the pistol slightly. "A village was destroyed by what may well be another world-threatening-"
There was another knock on the door, and Betty's voice spoke. "Babe, you still awake? You're not answering any of my texts."
"Um, he's asleep, Betty," Peter called.
"Oh, already?"
"Mhm. Yeah," he gulped.
"Okay."
Fury began again. "That's why it's imperative-"
Another knock came and Peter began to sweat. Evie pinched the bridge of her nose. This time it was Mr. Dell. "Hey, boys. So that canal water today was filled with dangerous bacteria-"
"Another person touches that door and the three of us are going to attend a funeral," Fury said as the man rattled on, picking up the projector. "Suit up."
As Fury exited, Evie turned to her twin. "Nick Fury? Really?? AND YOU DIDN'T TELL ME?!"
Peter winced. "I um... I..." She gave him an exasperated look. "Get into your suit." He nodded, but she had already left.
-~-~-~-~-~-
The three stood on a boat, floating along one of the many canals. "Stark left these for you two," Fury said. "Why he couldn't give them to you in person, I don't know. But that's the only thing he told me." He handed Peter a case.
Peter opened it. Inside were two pairs of glasses, identical.
"'Uneasy lies the head that wears the crown.'" The two looked at him. He glanced back, smirking slightly. "Stark said you probably wouldn't get that because it's not a Star Wars reference."
The boat stopped and they walked through the sewers into a space filled with lots of tech and computers. "You can lose the masks," Fury told them. "Everyone here has seen you without it. You'd be feigning anonymity and breathing through spandex for no good reason."
The twins did so and followed him. "Over there, we have Maria Hill." He pointed at a man with a large gun. "That is Dimitri. And this is Mr. Beck."
The man turned to face them. "Mysterio?" Peter asked.
"What?"
"Doesn't matter. It's just what my friends have been calling you."
"Well, you can call me Quentin," he replied, shaking both Peter and Evie's hands. "You two handled yourself well out there today. I saw what you did with the tower. It was amazing teamwork. We could use people like you on my world." He turned back to the table.
"Thanks," Peter responded, but Evie interrupted. "I'm sorry. Your world?"
"Mr. Beck is from Earth," Fury responded, walking up. "Just not yours."
"There are multiple realities," Quentin continued. "This is Earth Dimension 616. I'm from Earth 833."
"I'm sorry, you're saying there's a multiverse?" Peter asked, walking back up to him, his twin following.
"I thought that was theoretical," Evie added.
"I mean, that changes how we understand the initial singularity-"
"We're talking about an eternal inflation system-"
"And how does that even work with all the quantum-"
"It's insane!"
Maria Hill and Fury were looking at them. "S-sorry. It's really cool," Peter said, slightly embarrassed.
Quentin was smiling. "Don't ever apologize for being the smartest one in the room," he told them. The two smiled in response.
"Anyway," Maria continued. The table projected a hologram of a wormhole, and Quentin spoke again. "They were born in stable orbits within black holes, creatures formed from the primary elements: Water, earth, fire, and air."
The hologram changed to show the four as Evie pushed down the urge to recite the ATLA intro.
"The Science Division had a technical name; we just called them Elementals."
"Versions of them exist across our mythologies," Maria said.
"Turns out, the myths are real," Quentin responded.
"Like Thor," Peter put in. "Thor was a myth, now I study him in my physics class." He paused. "Well, did," he added under his breath.
"These myths are threats," Fury responded.
"They first materialized on my Earth many years ago," Quentin resumed. "We mobilized and fought them, but with each battle, they grew, got stronger. I was part of the last battalion left trying to stop them." The hologram earth began to be consumed by fire. "All we did was delay the inevitable."
"The Elementals are here now, attacking the same coordinates," Maria told them. "Our satellites confirm it."
"Thank Mr. Beck for destroying the other three," Fury said. "There's only one left: fire."
"The strongest of them all." Quentin looked down. "The one that destroyed my Earth. It's the one that took my family."
Peter looked at him playing with the wedding ring on his finger. "I'm sorry."
"And it will be in Prague in approximately 48 hours."
Fury looked at them hard. "We have one mission: kill it. And you're coming with us."
Peter blinked. "I'm sorry, did you say Prague? Mr. Fury, this all seems like bigtime, you know, huge superhero kind of stuff."
Evie sighed as he said, "and I'm just a friendly neighborhood Spider-Man, sir."
"B***h, please. You've been to space." Fury responded.
"I know, but that was an accident."
"Accident, il mio culo," Evie muttered.
"There's gotta be someone else you can use. What about Thor?"
"As far as we know off-world," he responded.
"Okay, Doctor Strange."
"Unavailable."
"Captain Marvel."
Fury stopped. "Do not invoke her name."
"Sir, look, I wanna help. I do. But if my aunt finds out I left my class trip, she'll kill me." Evie rolled her eyes. "You won't have to worry about that Peter." He sighed. "Ok, but if we're seen in Europe after the Washington Monument, our class will figure out who I am, then Then the whole world will figure out who I am, and then I'm done!"
"We, you mean?"
Peter paused. "Uh, right."
"Okay," Fury said. "I understand."
"I'm sorry, what?" The two asked together.
"Why don't you get back before your teachers miss you and become suspicious." He smiled. Evie narrowed her eyes. This is not how Nick Fury worked. "Dimitri. Take him back to the hotel, please."
"Thank you, Mr. Fury," Peter told him before they walked out. "And good luck."
Quentin nodded. "See you, kids."
"Yeah, see you. Bye, ma'am."
"Yeah."
As they walked out, Evie turned to him. "WHAT is going on with you?? You've been off, you rarely leave my side, you've stopped making quips, you even pushed May away! I don't-"
She stopped, seeing the tears brimming in his eyes. She brushed them away and spoke in a soft voice. "Hey, talk to me."
He shook his head. "When... when the older me came, he would talk to me at night, tell me some things. He said that- he said that HE came back. But before he could say when, you knocked on the door, so I don't know when-" his voice was becoming frantic "- or how, or-"
"Who would come back?"
He shook his head, more violently this time. "Don't make me say his name, I can't say it, I won't say it-"
"Peter-"
"No!" He looked at her and stepped back at her startled expression. "I'm sorry, I'm sorry-"
"Hey." She grabbed him and gently pulled him forward. "It's alright. Ok? It's alright. You have me, and Tony, and heck, you have the Avengers here to protect you, ok? I promise, nothing's going to happen."
He nodded. Dimitri grunted and they walked back to the hotel.
-~-~-~-~-~-
Peter tossed and turned in his bed.
"Have fun guys! And make sure to behave!"
The door closed behind their aunt and uncle and the man- what was his name? Skip- turned to look at them.
&*&*&
"Well, hello there."
Evie and Peter glanced at each other. Something seemed off.
"You ready to have some fun tonight?" The smile on his face was... strange.
Peter shrugged. "Sure. What are we doing?"
The smile grew wider slightly. "That's a surprise. Do you like to read?"
The two nodded, smiling. "We have lots of books!" Evie told him excitedly. "I can read all of them," Peter boasted.
"That's great, Einstein," the man responded, with just a slight hint of sarcasm.
"I can too!" Evie interjected, huffing.
The man sat down on the couch. "Then let's look at some stuff, shall we?" He pulled out a magazine and motioned for the two to sit beside him.
They glanced at each other but did as he said. He opened the magazine and Peter covered his eyes.
It had... pictures. The title said "Playboy", but none of these pictures were of boys. Evie scooted away but Skip roughly pulled her back. He jerked Peter's hands off of his eyes.
He forced the two to look at page after page, until they finished it. He finally let them off the couch.
Peter stood in front of Evie holding her behind him defensively. Skip considered them a moment, then grinned. "Eh, I've done enough girls anyway."
Evie tried to pull Peter with her, but he wouldn't come. After one last attempt, she ran up the stairs, glancing back as Skip closed in on Peter.
"Now for that surprise..."
&*&*&
A voice.
"He won't wake up or move, but he seems like he's in pain, he keeps crying out. I'm scared, I've never seen him like this."
A sharp intake of breath.
"Leave for now."
A door closing.
The bed creaking slightly.
Another, soft voice singing.
"Come stop your crying, it'll be alright."
Peter lifted his head slightly and opened bloodshot eyes to look at Evie.
"Just take my hand, hold it tight."
She moved his head into her lap, gently stroking his hair.
"I will protect you from all around you."
He closed his eyes again.
"I will be here, don't you cry."
He took a shuddering breath.
"Cause you'll be in my heart, yes you'll be in my heart."
"From this day on," his quiet voice joined in, breaking slightly.
"Now and forevermore..."
Ugh, Quentin
I liked him better when he was a good guy
So, I'm sure you're wondering how this will play out, since obviously Tony is alive this time? Well, you'll just have to find out
Love y'all!
-Morgan
