It Was Only A Few Moments (1)
All I had were a few moments.
I had less than twelve hours left in town before I had to fly back home. I came for Angelica and her wedding with her beloved, Lucas Hale and left for no one. Not even myself. I didn't want to leave, but there was no way I could have stayed. I had to face the facts. I was a grown-up. I had responsibilities and sadly that town was not where they lied but it was where I left my heart.
If I could go back in time and live through all the events before I made it to the airport that one winter morning to catch my flight, I would and if I was able to choose where to begin. I would begin on that chilly winter afternoon in December, the day of Angelica's wedding where the snow fell softly from the dark sky as we remained unbothered from it in the purple lit ballroom where Angelica's ceremony was held.
Where the people were all gathered together as they formed a circle around Angelica and Lucas as they danced in the middle. Some of them had drinks in their hands, and others had food. Everyone wasn't in the ballroom, though. Some of the elders stepped out for a cigarette break and some adults took their whiny children to the bathroom.
I, on the other hand, was the odd one out. After the ceremony, after all the tears of joy and me congratulating my best friend and her husband, I faded away in the back. Not only in the ballroom but from her life as she had a new number one who she was going to spend the rest of her life with. I was the one left behind, I always was.
"And what are you doing here all alone? Shouldn't you be with your best friend?"
The voice was unfamiliar but it spoke to me like it knew who I was. When I turned to see where the voice was coming from, I squinted my eyes at the fellow. His skin was olive, his hair was dark and curly and he had a freshly shaved face. He looked about my age, and I was 26. My guess was that he was either 27 or 28. Nevertheless, he processed as unfamiliar in my mind, a stranger. "And who are you?"
He smiled as he took the seat next to me, at the small round table I sat at, towards the back of the ballroom. "I'm Ignacio. Best friend of Lucas."
"Angelica's husband, Lucas?"
He smiled. "The one and only." I can't believe I didn't notice sooner. He was the best man after all. It looked like he had more to say so I let him speak. "Why aren't you dancing with everyone else?"
I shrugged. "I don't want to get in the way. I guess. This is a special moment for Angelica. I don't want to ruin it."
"Nonsense. You won't ruin it. She's your best friend. All you can do is make it better by being there with her."
I looked away from Ignacio and watched Angelica as she danced with her husband and her siblings. She looked so happy. It made me smile. I then looked back at Ignacio. "You may be right, but I've been staying at her place for a little while now so I'm sure she's tired of seeing my face. I'll just be happy for her from afar."
"Your name is Ambrose, correct? Ambrose Baxter?"
"How do you know my name?"
"Lucas. He would tell me about you. He would always talk about how jealous he was of the relationship between you and Angelica. From my knowledge, Ambrose would not just sit back and watch Angelica be happy from afar. Instead, he would be in the center of all that joy and happiness."
I said nothing.
In less than a few minutes, he had already figured me out and I did not like that I liked that about him.
"Have you eaten anything?"
"A little. Not much. Why is there something you would recommend?"
He smirked. "Actually, there is. Have you tried any of the cake?" I simply shook my head. He gasped. "Ah, come on! That's usually what people care about when coming to these kinds of things. You know, besides the actual event and everything."
He made me chuckle and I couldn't wipe the smile off my face afterward. He then reached for my hand that I didn't know was on the table and just from the slight touch of his fingers against my skin made me jump. I didn't think he noticed or maybe he did. He probably just didn't care.
He reached for me again and that time I allowed him to grab my hand to lift me up from my seat. I pretended to fight against him like I wasn't interested in leaving my seat but in reality, I was being a liar. I wanted to go with him.
"You're going to try this cake, and you're going to love it!"
As he pulled me, I gave a lousy attempt at trying to break free. "I would rather go back to my seat. Thank you very much."
He ignored me and continued to pull me along until we reached the table of desserts. There were different types of cookies, brownies, and most importantly, at the end of the table, stood the wedding cake. The cake Ignacio claimed to be magical.
"Grab a plate. I'll cut you a piece." He began to walk towards the cake. Then he turned back towards me before I could grab my plate. "Actually, grab two plates. I want another piece."
I chuckled and grabbed two purple plastic plates for us. I walked over to him as he began to cut the cake. "I'm starting to think that you were just looking for someone to come with you, so you wouldn't feel guilty about getting more cake."
He placed a giant piece of cake gently on one of the plates I held and then he looked at me with his brown eyes. "Maybe you're right." I laughed. "Also, that's my piece," he said before he licked the frosting from his thumb.
I had to give it to him. He had a knack for making me smile that was for sure.
Once my cake touched the plate, he didn't hesitate on grabbing his slice and then two clear plastic forks for us.
"Thank you," I said as I took one of the forks.
"It was my pleasure." He had sliced a piece of his cake before he took a bite of it. The face resembled that of the face you would see someone who released for the first time after that trend, "No Nut November," pure bliss.
I got so caught up in staring at him that I forgot to try the piece I had. I cut myself a piece the way he did and took a bite and I surely made the face he made or at least I felt like I did.
"This cake is amazing. You weren't lying," I said as I ate my cake and watched everyone.
"I know." I looked over at him and noticed there was no more cake left. He gave me a sheepish grin. "Kill me, but I could go for another piece."
Another chuckle came out of me because of him. "You can have the rest of mine."
His eyes lit up. "Really? You don't like it?"
I shook my head and handed my cake to him. Well, almost before I pulled it back. "I lied. I love it."
He laughed and then hit my arm like I was a very close friend of his. It made me smile.
Then, in those moments of silence between us, I started to think and question everything. I was preparing for maybe two more minutes with him before he got bored of me and walked off to go grab someone else to get cake with. But I didn't want him to go. Not so soon.
"Did you really only approach me to get cake with you?"
He looked at me like I was the dumbest person earth. It was in the way his face scrunched up at me and how quickly he turned to me.
"No, not at all."
I could've left it at that but for some reason, it wasn't enough. "Then why?"
He hesitated.
Damn it!
Why did I have to ask that question? Why couldn't I just take what he said and ran with it? Why did I have to go and mess everything up like I did everything else? Why couldn't I stop thinking of all the "whys" until he spoke?
"Because you caught my eye."
That wasn't the answer I expected but one I always dreamt of. I didn't even know what to say after that, so he spoke again.
"Is that what you wanted to hear?" Still speechless. "I would've thought it was obvious." He chuckled, but it was the bad kind of chuckle. The kind of chuckle that nerves were in control of. Maybe he was starting to ask himself why. He was killing himself and I was the only one who could've saved him. All I had to do was chuckle.
So I did and it made him better. At least, that's what it seemed.
The song that was playing changed to a popular pop-rap song everyone knew. That everyone in the ballroom cheered for.
I looked to see if they were cheering on Angelica and Lucas but they really were cheering for the song that played before they broke out into dance. Some nodded their heads, others did a little bounce and pointed their finger as they rapped and then there was us.
Ignacio took the plate away from me and again, he grabbed my hand.
"Let's dance."
"But I don't know how."
"Look out at everyone and tell me if anyone here really knows how to dance." I looked out at everyone and no one really looked like they knew what they were doing but they were having fun. "Dancing is about letting the music enter your body and take control. It's a great feeling to just get out of your head and just follow where the music goes."
"I guess you make a point."
"Now come."
He gently tugged my arm and I allowed him to take me onto the dance floor. The song that played had a popular dance that went along with it. It was all over social media and pretty much anyone could do it. I actually enjoyed doing the dance alone in my room so I waited for the chorus and performed the dance moves along with everyone else.
It was actually fun. We all probably looked stupid but no one was really paying attention to that. We were just having a good time. Not only was I bonding with Ignacio and his obnoxiously silly dancing but when songs we all collectively knew came on we sang and danced together as a group. I don't think I ever had that much fun in public before and I had silly dancing, cake fiend, Ignacio, to thank for that.
