Chapter Twelve

He was so shocked by her bold move that he just stood there frozen, not doing anything. Just then both Mila and Evan looked in their direction wondering about the sudden whispering that was going on around them as the music dies to change into a new one.

"Ha! I knew there was more between those two than Jared was letting on." Evan started laughing as they stopped dancing to stare at them.

Mila scowled, not liking what she was seeing at all. But more than that she felt a little...betrayed. And hurt as her heart constricted tightly in her chest. She was confused on why she was feeling this way.

She tried to convince herself it had to be because Jared was her good friend, and her cousin was taking advantage of him. Maybe it wasn't that she was feeling heartbroken for herself but for him since he never seems he could catch a break. Yeah, that had to be it.

She lets Evan go and steps out of his embrace as he continued to laugh at the scene that seemed to be just frozen as Jared just stood there not doing anything still. She starts marching towards them as her anger slowly starts to rise now.

Jared got over his shock and pushed her away from him, almost knocking her over. But he catches her arm in a moment of panic, then quickly let her go as if touching her scorched his hand. His face was set in hard lines, his eyes flashing in slight rage, showing her, he didn't like what she just did one little bit.

But she just smiled and bashed her eyelashes at him making him even angrier that she didn't seem to care about how he felt at all.

"Wow, Jared. I had no idea." Selena stated thickly with malice and disgust by the whole display.

Her brother seriously needed a whack in the head. For someone who was so brilliant, can sure be dumb. Although, she wasn't very pleased with Kristan at all. Why couldn't the girl just take a damn hint already? Why did she keep forcing something that wasn't there and never going to happen?

"Come on Ian, let's go get some punch." She grabbed his hand and together they headed away from everyone.

"Yeah, okay." Ian looked like he wanted to say something to his friend but decided against it and followed after his girl.

Jared just stood there wide eyed watching them leave, not comprehending what the hell just went down. Did his sister honestly believe he had wanted that to happen? Even knowing how he felt towards Kristan and her overly obsessive ways?

More anger burst through him as his eyes pierced down at the girl in question. "Do me a favor and never, never do that again." He bit out.

She just laughed it off not fazed one bit by the dark look he was throwing her way.

"You know, you look really hot when you show that bad boy persona everyone says you are." She provocatively slides up to him completely flabbergasting the hell out of him.

What the hell was wrong with this girl? Like seriously, what was wrong with her brain to think that he was playing around right now? Why couldn't she accept that he was never going to be interested in her? Not to mention the way she acted. Where the hell did she even learn all this?

Sometimes he couldn't help wondering if she was even a virgin. He hated that the thoughts came up, but her actions spoke major volumes that maybe she wasn't as innocent as she should be. And he didn't want to find out either.

He jerked when suddenly Mila was by their side looking all hellbent on snapping at them. He swallowed hard when he sees the look on her face. He instantly felt guilty, even though he didn't do anything wrong. She didn't believe that he initiated that right? Out of anyone she should know that he would never do something so out of character for him, especially with Kristan.

Suddenly, he felt dread seep into his chest. No matter what the circumstances were, he still couldn't get the fact that his sister may know something about his feelings towards her best friend. Does she know? If so, how did she find out?

The only person he ever told was Gale and he knew the old man wouldn't say anything, even though he did sort of overstepped his boundaries a little with the attire spectacle. Was he just that noticeable that no matter how he manages to hide it she can just see through him anyways? Or did his emotions from the week before really do more damage than he thought it had?

He had to be just overthinking it. There was no possible way she would think him lowly enough to just allow Kristan to kiss him like she just did. She knew how he felt with her, so why would she assume the worst? His mind was going to explode with all this jamming of thoughts racing through his mind.

"Hello." Mila said cooly to them both, placing a tight smile to her lips.

Damn it, he was definitely going to explode.

Kristan slipped her arm through his and smiled in return, clearly stating her claim on him. She leans against him, hugging him a little tighter than he liked.

"Hello, cousin." She stated sweetly.

He looked at Kristan's arm with a frown and a deep repulsion to coil away from her touch. But with so many people around he didn't want to seem overly rude. He did bring her as his date after all.

"Kris, could I talk to you alone for a moment?" Mila asked, avoiding eye contact with him.

"Really, Mila? I rather not, me and Jared were just thinking to get some fresh air for a bit. Right, Jared?" Kristan looked up at him just to find him staring at her cousin with a look of longing and pleading.

Getting angry she pinched him hard in his side, grabbing his attention with a flinch and yelp.

"Ow! What the hell was that for?!" He nearly growled at her.

Mila frowned at his sudden outburst and squinted her eyes at her younger cousin with suspicion.

"Come on, my handsome delinquent." She stated happily and turned him away.

"Well, since you're going out for fresh air Evan and I will join you guys." Mila quickly interjects.

Evan finally came over after finding she had left him standing there alone. "What was that?" He asked.

"We're just discussing on going outside for some fresh air." She grabbed his hand and ushered him forward to follow them.

She could see that Kristan was getting upset but she knew she wouldn't throw her tantrum in front of the whole school. Not if she wanted to make a huge embarrassing scene of herself.

"Great." She forced herself to say with clenched teeth and a fake smile.

Jared didn't know what to do. He seemed well...bewildered by the whole exchange between the two of them. They all set out to leave the gym and proceeded to walk to the blacktop where the basketball hoops were at. There was nobody out there other than by the entrance and it became dark and quiet the further they moved away.

"Hey, Jared, want to go to the fair next weekend?" Evan wondered aloud.

"It's here already?"

"What?! You mean you haven't noticed? Next weekend is the last days!" His best friend seemed panicked although he didn't understand why.

It was just the fair. It came around this time every year and honestly, they weren't missing anything they haven't seen or done before. What did it matter if they went or not? Truthfully, he was getting bored of the attraction.

"Oh, I would love to go with you! I haven't gone either and I've been wanting to go." Kristan said eagerly, causing his body to stiffen with uneasiness.

"What are you talking about Kris, you been to the fair almost every single day since it started." Mila snapped with irritation.

"Not with somebody that I really like." She smirked, showing that same irritation right back at her through her eyes.

"Um...well, I wasn't planning on going but if you want Evan then I guess we could." He said slowly.

"Sweet, I heard they have this new ride that's awesome and I want to try it." He stated excitedly.

"Oh, yeah, I went on that one! It's really fun!"

"Really? How many times did you go on it?"

The two of them started walking off again as they conversed about the fair and all it's many rides. It was boring talk for Mila, and she was frustrated with herself. All the sudden she wanted to go home, clean herself up and watch a movie in her bed.

She looked over to Jared and saw he had his head back with his eyes closed, walking leisurely with his hands in his pockets. He seemed exhausted and she was angry with him for kissing her cousin. Didn't he know there should be a boundary with friend's family?

Of course, she knew that was being unfair to him, but she didn't feel like being fair at the moment. That kiss really had gotten to her and she hated the way she was feeling right now. Confused, betrayed, hurt, angry and something she couldn't quite identify, which was really getting on her nerves.

"I want to go home." She blurted out, stopping in her tracks.

They all turned to look at her.

"But it's not even late and they still haven't announced the king and queen of homecoming." Evan said looking a bit disappointed.

"I can take her home." Jared suddenly said.

"What about me?" Kristan asked angrily, the rage hidden beneath the surface.

"Evan can take you and Selena later since I don't think she's ready either. I'm tired and wanted to leave about an hour ago." He confessed.

He was tired and wanted to get this night over and done with.

"Alright." His friend said, who seemed happy knowing he could stay longer.

"Fine, whatever." Kristan rolled her eyes but then quickly kisses Jared right on the mouth before he realized again what she was doing.

His lips thin in anger, breathing heavily. He forces a smile at them and turns to Mila. "Let's go get your jacket."

They all head back inside, Mila and Jared said goodnight to Selena and Ian, along to a few of their other friends. Evan grabbed her and gave a soft gentle hug.

"See you later." He whispers, staring right down at her lips looking like he wanted to lean down and kiss her.

For a moment there, she really wanted him too. Jared wasn't facing them so he could finally get the chance to do it. But at the last moment he backs away. Disappointment showed on her face and throughout her body.

"Hey Jared, take care of her. Make sure she gets home safely." He winks at her before letting her go.

All she could do was smile at him.

"Seriously bro? Do you really have to ask that of me? Of course, I 'll get her home safe." He scoffed at him, looking a bit annoyed that he even bothered spouting the words.

He hands her jacket over and they both walked back out into the cold night air and quickly got inside the limo that was waiting for them.
