Chapter Three
This is it.
She stares up at the large two story planation that held a three door garage and a mother house in the back. The place looked big enough to hold at least seven bedrooms. Each window held its own small balcony, and the porch was as wide as her small apartment combined. The house sat on a large acre of land that was trimmed perfectly and so green it was breathtaking.
She couldn't help the feeling of being completely out of place. When she had called she was surprised to hear a man's voice pick up. She figured she was going to deal with a secretary or maybe the mother of the child at least.
"Ah, hi I mean hello, my name is Isabel Alveraz, and I was calling in about the ad in the paper. I was wondering if the position was still available?"
"Hello, yes it is. I have a few interviews lined up but I'm taking them very seriously this time. You do understand it's a live in position correct?"
The sound of his voice was smooth, deep and clear. Her nerves immediately started up at hearing it. "Yes, I do. It does state it clearly in the ad."
"Apologies, it's just I keep getting people who obviously doesn't read thoroughly of what the job requires and when I start talking about them moving in they freak out and tell me they couldn't do it after all."
"Sorry to hear that. I did read it from top to bottom and am very aware of what the job entitles too." She informs him.
"Good. I'm holding interviews first thing tomorrow if you're available. I'll give you the address."
And with that here she was, standing in dumbfounded amazement at the place that was way bigger than she could have imagined. To think if she passes the interview and gets hired she would be living here for however long the job was needed.
Heading for the door she was a bit surprised there wasn't a butler waiting for her that's how rich this place looked. Knocking on the door she patiently waits. It was just a few minutes before the door swings open and a young woman around her own age stands there.
"Hello, you must be Miss Alveraz. It's nice to meet you." She reaches out her hand to shake.
She was a beautiful woman with long black hair that waved down in glorious curls. She was slightly tanned with smooth skin and about her own height of five foot five.
"Hi, yes but please call me Issie, I'm here for the interview."
"Of course. I'm Selena, Shasta's aunt. Her father Evan couldn't be here today since he got called in to work on an emergency. He unfortunately won't be back probably until later on tonight, so he's asked me to fill in for him."
She opens the door wider to let her in and she couldn't hold in the amazed shock as the foyer alone looked like something out of a Victorian lifestyle. It was decorated with warm colors that gave it a homey feel and nothing like those new modern day living where everything was bare and cold.
"If you could please follow me this way." Selena asks kindly as she guides her to the side door that showed a sitting room. "I have refreshments already prepared for you if you like." She goes to sit down in a plush armchair while she sat on the matching loveseat.
A fire was blazing in the hearth that was decorated for the season of fall. This was definitely going to be one of her favorite rooms of the house she could already tell. She looks to Selena who was looking down at a clipboard with a list. She felt a hundred times better at what she was wearing for this interview, for Selena was just wearing a normal t-shirt with blue faded jeans.
"Okay, I'm going to go ahead and start off the questions if that's alright with you. And you are aware this is a live in position right?"
She couldn't help but crack a smile. "Yes I am aware."
Selena smiles back. "I'm going to guess Evan must have asked you that already over the phone hasn't he?" She looked a little sheepish.
"If the man I spoke to yesterday is this Evan, than yes he did."
"Alright that's good. I've already had to turn down two applications today because of that. It seems people aren't willing to move in a strangers house just for a job no matter how much they'll be getting paid. But it's completely understandable. Obligations and such."
She couldn't help but think of her mother and the condition they were able to come up with should she get hired. They called in about hiring a nurse to come and check on her a few hours out of the day. With the money she would be receiving with this job they would be able to afford that much at least. The rest of the time she could stop on by and check on her when she wasn't on the clock.
"Okay, lets go ahead and get started shall we?"
After twenty minutes, Selena finally puts down the clipboard and beams. "That was the last of them and I could confidently tell you that you passed with flying colors. There's just one more test to do before I could inform Evan about hiring you if that's alright?"
She nods her head. "Of course, whatever is needed."
Selena stands up and waves her to follow. "Come with me please."
Together they walk through the foyer and pass through another door into the large kitchen. She looks around with more amazement at how large the room was with all its brand new appliances and cleanliness.
"You wouldn't have to worry about any of the housework. Evan has a cleaning service for that."
They walk pass through the kitchen into the dining room that was nearly just as big with a long rectangle table that could easily fit twelve people. This room was also decorated with the fall season making the place look warm and cozy.
"Does he hire someone to decorate as well or does the wife do that?" She couldn't help asking.
Selena slows down a little, her smile slipping just a bit. "No, Evan isn't married and Shasta's mother...I don't think it's really my place to say to be honest. Evan may want to keep that information private sorry."
Shaking her head erratically she states, "Oh no, that's okay. I didn't mean to pry like that its just this place is amazing, and I was just curious that's all."
She gives her a reassuring smile. "Actually Evan decorates his home with Shasta. It's something he was deprived of as a child and wants to ensure that Shasta gets everything he wasn't able too while growing up." She then stops right before double glass planed doors to the backyard. "He's a very good father and she's more important to him than anything in this world. So her best interests and wellbeing comes first."
"I completely understand." All too well she thought to herself.
With a nod Selena opens one of the doors and heads outside. Following her she took in her surroundings with wide eyes. It was like a fairytale land back here with large trees that branched out providing shade, a small pond with a white gazebo that was incased with ivy. There were flowers growing everywhere with cobblestones as a path in the grass. A mother house just a bit further down the path walk and then on the other side of the yard was open space equipped with a playground and sandbox. One of the large trees held a beautiful treehouse and instead of a ladder bolted to the tree there was a built in staircase for easier and safer access.
"If you get hired, you'll be staying in the mother house. If you have children or anything you're more than welcome to have them live here with you, Evan wouldn't mind as long as you stick with the rules and requirements that you agree too."
Isabel stops at hearing that. "I don't have any children, but..." She was hesitant to even ask her.
Selena turns to her with a frown. "I was going to offer the others the same, but they wouldn't exactly let me finish before they just got up and walked out. But you've come this far so I wanted to be sure you understood that. No boyfriends or other family members I'm afraid though."
Her question instantly dies, and her heart lost that hope that had been momentarily brought out. "Then I don't have anyone."
Selena nods her head and continues to walk before she stops again right below the treehouse. "Shasta love, could you please come down here!" She calls up and immediately Isabel felt nervousness all over again.
Then a small body comes bounding down the steps, hair flying everywhere and when she stops right in front of her aunt she looks right at her, trying to move the crazy locks from her face.
"Sweetheart I want you to meet someone. Come say hello." Selena takes her little hand and pulls her to stand in front of me.
She was the most beautiful little girl she has ever seen as she tilts her head looking at her with wide doe eyes and asks in the most adorable voice she's ever heard,
"Hello, my names Shasta. Are you an angel?"
And she instantly fell in love.
