"Jewels, open your damn eyes!"
With my head aching I quickly turned to my attacker, my fist's ready.
"Slow down! It's just me!" I squinted my eyes until my vision became normal.
Her brunette hair was the first thing I noticed. "Lucy? You atta—"
She sighed, rolling her eyes. "Relax, I'm sorry for knocking you out, I thought you were a ROG."
"Where is James?" I asked, noticing that we were alone behind a tree.
"I don't know," she shrugged her shoulders. "I knocked you out and James vanishes ... someone took him."
This caused me to quickly stand up, but I stood too fast and almost fell over. Lucy helped me remain standing by wrapping her arm around me.
"Where—"
She slaps her hand over my mouth; silencing me, "Shh, someone's coming."
We both hid behind the tree away from sight.
"I thought I heard something over here," came a man's voice followed by footsteps.
"You sure?" another man's voice asked.
"What are you two doing?" That voice, I know it. "You know what? Never mind, but we have to get leave, now!"
"Yes, Derek."
My blood boiled at the sound of his voice. Lucy held me tightly, restraining me from attacking him.
A few minutes later, we both emerged from behind the tree.
I was worried something bad had happened to James, memories of how we had been connected a few hours ago swamped my brain.
We had been so close to each other. I do not know why I felt this way, but the thought of losing him made my heart ache. I could not imagine what it would be like without him.
"Jewels?"
My head snapped to the direction of his voice and before I knew what I was doing I was running towards him. It was like my legs had a mind of their own.
James opened his arms for me and I ran into them. Wrapping my arms around his body as he completely engulfed me.
"I thought something happened to you," I cried pressing my head against his chest. "I thought I lost you."
"It's okay, Jewels," he breathed out kissing the top of my head. "I'm fine, we're fine."
"James," I lifted my head from him and looked into his eyes. "I was so afraid, I do not want anything to happen—"
He cut me off by slamming his lips against mine. James kissed me fast and slid his tongue into my mouth. This time I did not pull back, it felt weird to have his tongue inside my mouth.
Two shades caught my attention, I pulled away from James who was quick to get a gun out and aimed it at the shadows.
"Oi! Don't shoot!"
James lowered his gun and released a sigh then wrapped his arm protectively around me. "Tom, it's great to see you."
Tom was helping Nathan walk, who seemed to have an injured left leg. "Likewise."
"What happened?" Lucy asked standing on the other side of James.
Nathan grunted and closed his eyes briefly. "They took everyone."
I felt James tense. "What?"
"The lad's right, ROGS captured everyone. Jeremy, Mick, Brett, they're all gone." Tom inhaled a large amount of air. "Derek said something about you Jewels, he wants you."
"Derek's gonna use the prisoners as a trade, them for—"
I cut Lucy off, "Them for me."
"No! I'm not giving you to them!" James's arm tightened around me and I am pulled right against his chest. "No way, Jewels."
"James—"
His head snapped to my direction, "Jewels, I love you, I can't give you up for them. I know Jeremy is my family, but I won't allow you to sacrifice yourself for them. I won't be able to live with myself." His eyes were scanning my face. "I won't do it."
"This is the only way."
"What are you talking about?" James had not noticed I took his gun.
Using my hands I pushed myself off him, the gun pointing at them. "It is the only way, you must take me to Derek. I will not allow anyone to die."
"Jewels, don't." Lucy surprised me by speaking, "Killing yourself won't save them."
"She's right, girl, you'll be no good to us dead," Tom said.
I could not look at James, after I allowed him to make me feel things I have not felt before and giving myself entirely to him, allowing him to make love to me.
I know I would give in.
But I could not allow it, I must be strong. I must do this for them.
"I have courage." My feet moved backwards, away from them. "Please, do not come after me. I must do this alone."
"Jewels." My eyes finally fell on James. I gulped and a lump formed in my throat. His eyes were glossy and red, and tears threatened to spill, but I could tell he was fighting to hold them in. "Don't do this, Jewels, please."
"I agree with him." Nathan twirled some locks of his hair and tucked them behind his ears. "There's another way—"
"No," I simply replied, my eyes never leaving James. "This is the only way for it is now I will destroy Derek. I will bring down the ROGS."
"The scout is still out there," Nathan reminded me.
Yes, he was right, the scout was still here and most likely watching us now. But I must do this.
"You are wrong, this is the only way. Please do not follow me." I broke eye contact with James and as I turned on my heels tears spilled over my brims and flooded down my cheeks.
There was a possibility I would not succeed in this mission. But I would try, I would not stop until everyone in Camp Jameson was safe.
Even if it meant this would be the end of me.
I would give my life for these humans.
