Planet: Earth

Location: The ruined city

After the Jeep was packed James and I left camp and headed towards the city. I was surprised how fast it took for the bright sun to begin to descend towards the bottom of the horizon. As we approached the city I saw it was surrounded by trees, and two rivers were flowing around it.

"Jewels, we're going to be quick. In and out. I don't want to spend anymore time here than we have too." I nodded and watched as he gripped the steering wheel. He pressed his foot against one of the peddles and the Jeep sped across a bridge.

I leant my head against the glass window as I rubbed my aching temples with my fingers. I was feeling worse than when we left the camp, but I did not tell James.

"You okay?" In the corner of my eye I noticed he had turned his head and was looking at me before his gaze trailed back to the road ahead.

"Yes," I reassured him with a nod of my head. "I am fine." My fingers continued rubbing my temples in hopes it would relieve my aching head.

I felt his hand land on my thigh. "Jewels, please tell me if you're not okay." He squeezed my thigh as I turned my head and found that he was looking at me. "You'd tell me if you weren't, right?" His gaze returned back to the road.

"Of course." I did not know why I lied, perhaps it was because I did not want him to worry about me, there were so many sick people back at camp who needed this healing medicine. "I am fine, James, just feel a little tired." I offered him a smile and he returned it.

We remained silent as James sped through the outer regions of the city, he turned the Jeep a sharp right and drove down a street. I watched the ruined houses flash by, I could not help but wonder what happened here, how this city became like it was now. I knew very little about this planet and its dark past.

I was pulled from my thoughts when the Jeep came to a stop under a bridge that had been blown up, only half was still intact. James turned the engine off, opened his door and jumped out of the Jeep. I followed him, quieting closing my door behind me.

"You see that building?" James spoke. I turned around to find him pointing to a tall building on the other side of the bridge we were under. "That's the hospital, I'm hoping there's some supplies still in there. If the Nomads haven't raided it already."

James walked to the back of the Jeep and opened the door. He took out a few bags which he swung over his shoulder then buckled a belt of ammunition around his waist and pulled out a rifle.

"Stay close to me, alright? I don't want you an arms length away, baby." He gave me a brief kiss as I took out a bag and copied him by hooking the strap over my shoulder. "Jewels, before we do this, I want to tell you something."

"What is it?" I asked, biting my bottom lip.

His eyes darted all over my face and his lips parted. It looked as if he was trying to figure out what to say. Shaking his head, he closed his mouth and then said, "Forget it, come on, babe."

After locking the Jeep and making sure it was secure, I followed James as he began to walk towards to the hospital. With the sun almost gone and the darkness taking over it was easy to move through the street, hiding in the shadows so we would not get seen.

The large building sat a fair distance from the other buildings, it had many different floors. The top seemed to have been destroyed somehow, maybe blown up.

James gripped his rifle and scanned the area, once he was satisfied he took my hand in his and pulled me across to a place where many damaged vehicles were parked. We did not enter in the doors that had a sign saying "Main Entrance", instead James took me around the back and we went in through a small door.

The air smelt damp and mouldy, and the floor was covered in dirt and many things were spread over it. I followed James through some corridors until we reached doors that had been made of glass, but were now just empty frames.

"Antibiotic's should be in here, looks like no one has raided this place yet," James finally spoke after silence had engulfed us.

We spent the next thirty minutes searching cupboards, boxes, small rooms and other places. James was getting angry and frustrated. "I don't get it. No one's been here! They should be here!"

I frowned and continued to search a tall black cupboard, I was about to close it when a box of glass tubes and bottles caught my attention.

"James." I spun around, perhaps a little too fast because my vision suddenly becomes blurry and I had to grab hold of a table beside the cupboard for support.

"Jewels!" Before I knew what was happening, James had run over to me and engulfed me in his arms. "Are you okay? And don't lie to me this time."

I closed my eyes shaking my head. "I am tired, James, so tired. My body feels weak."

"Why didn't you say anything?"

Our eyes locked, I parted my lips and found myself asking him, "Would you save me?"

"Bloody hell, baby, of course I would. I'd do anything for you." I felt his arms tighten around me as he held my body against his chest. "Jewels, I would die for you because I-I lov—"

There was the sound of people talking, echoing through the walls that captured our attention.

"Damn it, we have to go." He quickly helped me to my feet and wrapped an arm around my waist. We began to walk towards the door but I stopped him. "What is it?"

"I found them," I told him, his eyes widening as I pointed towards the large cupboard I was looking in earlier. "I found some—"

"Baby, you're amazing!" He quickly unzipped his bags and carefully placed the tubes and bottles in them before zipping it back up. James wrapped both arms around my waist and pressed his lips against mine. "I bloody love you, Jewels."

When he pulled away, I opened my mouth to question what this love meant, but before I had a chance to say anything, torch lights shone from outside in the hallway and the talking became louder.
