James pulled away from me and started running towards the smoke. "James," I called out to him, but he did not stop. I attempted to chase him but I was still weak from giving power to the generator. "James, please, I cannot run," I tried again. He continued to run so I tried my hardest to catch him.
My legs felt like jelly, they trembled with every step I took and my body felt as if it had doubled its weight. "James!" My knees suddenly gave out from underneath me, sending me to the ground.
I lifted my head up to see if James had noticed, but he did not.
"Jewels, you okay?" I tilted my head to the source of the voice. Brett frowned as he ran over to me. "Here, let me help you." He wrapped one arm around my upper back and pulled me up from the ground then muttered, "Bloody ROGS somehow planted a bomb and blew up one of our resource supply buildings."
"That is not good." I fought the blackness that was invading my vision. When I was satisfied with my vision, I turned to Brett. "Is there anything I can do?"
"Nah, James and Jeremy will handle it, besides you don't look too good," he commented, and we begin walking in the opposite direction of the smoke.
"Mummy!" a little girl screamed in the chaos breaking out behind us. "My Mummy is in there!" She falls to the ground on her knees, tears flowing down her cheeks creating a clean section in the dirt and ash covering her skin.
I pushed Brett off me and stumbled over to the little girl, asking, "Where is she?"
The girl looked up at me and with her shaky finger she pointed to the black smoke rising high into the darkening sky. The light in the sky was now setting, allowing us to see the orange-red glow. "No one knows she was in there," the girl sobbed. Brett knelt next to her. "My Mummy was getting me a blanket. My dolly and I were cold last night."
"I am going to look for her." I looked at the small child. "Do not worry, little one. I will find her for you." As I begin to walk off Brett grabbed my hand and pulled me away from the girl.
"Jewels, are you crazy? The building is gone, her mum is—"
"You do not know that. I will get the girl's mother even if her spirit has left her body. Everyone deserves to say goodbye to their loved ones." I snatched my hand from his grasp.
Even though my body wanted me to sleep I turned on my heel and ran towards the smoke. I could hear Brett yelling something but I ignored him.
People ran in the same direction as me, they carried buckets of water while some had hoses. I passed a few houses, a large shed and light posts that had turned on, and finally arrived at the burning building.
I could not see James or Jeremy but I knew they would be around here somewhere. I stood in front of the building, flames had engulfed it and a part of the room had collapsed. The air was filled with death, and that was when I noticed some motionless bodies were being covered with black blankets.
Moving my feet I ran towards the entrance of the building. Behind me someone shouted, "Hey! You can't go in there! Are you crazy? Stop!"
I entered the building. The air was thick, the smoke tried to enter through my mouth and nose but I pulled my jacket over my lower face to protect me. Flames generated heat that almost added to the thickened air. The fire flickered around me, spreading onto everything it touched.
I moved deeper into the building, my eyes scanning the large room for signs of the girl's mother. Knowing there was a chance I would not find her alive, I still pushed forward. My own body grew weaker and the wound I had gotten from the gun many days ago started to ache.
The air had grown so thick I struggled to inhale enough oxygen to satisfy my body's needs. My legs gave out, forcing me onto the ground.
I began to crawl but stopped when I heard someone yell, "Help! Help me! Please!" Forcing myself back onto my legs, I looked around. There was so much smoke, so much fire I could not see anything. "Help! I'm stuck! Is anyone there? Please help! I don't want to die!"
"Hello?" I yelled through the thick smoke. "Where are you?"
"Help! Over here!"
No matter how hard I looked around I could not see anyone. "I cannot see you."
"Follow my voice!"
So I do, the person continued to guide me to them by talking. It was not long until I found them trapped in a hallway with a metal beam across a pair of legs.
It was a woman.
"I am here," I told her kneeling beside the metal beam that most likely had fallen from the burning roof. "I will get this off you but you must trust me. Do you trust me?"
"Yes," she instantly replied. Her face was blackened by the smoke, the skin on her arms and legs were red and blistered in some places. "My legs, I can't feel them."
I closed my eyes for a brief second then opened them and placed both of my hands on the metal beam. Ignoring the heat that radiated off the metal, I focused on the energy within me. The veins on my hands began to glow and I forced my power into the metal, which had trapped this woman, then within seconds the metal was turned to nothing and freed the woman.
"Oh, my ... wow ... who are y—"
"It matters not, now I will need your help to carry you." I quickly wrapped my arms around her just below her underarms. "Can you help me to pull you up?"
She did as I asked, and soon enough I had her in my arms and we began to slowly make our way back the way I had just come. She was heavier than she looked and I feared we would not make it out.
My fear became a reality when once again my legs failed to hold me, and I was forced to the ground with the woman. I could not breathe nor could I see and my vision was fading.
"Hey, are you okay? Just breathe."
"I-I cannot." I struggled to form the words, and when I opened my mouth all that left were coughs.
The woman pulled her body next to mine. "The ROGS are going to pay for this." Her voice was laced with anger.
"They kept me prisoner, they tortured me," I said hoarsely. I looked into her frightened eyes and said, "Vengeance shall be mine."
