Chapter 35 - Failure
I heard the Slytherin supporters cheer then ran off. The others followed my lead and we walked to the Pitch. I looked around, I couldn't see James anyway. Only Sirius, who walked up to us, running a hand through his hair. Marlene ran up to him.
"We saw what happened! Where's James?" Marlene asked him and Sirius heaved a sigh.
"Madam Hooch brought him to the Hospital Wing. He should be there now." He explained.
"But what happened? Why is he at the Hospital Wing?" Peter asked him.
"I don't know. All I know is that he's seriously hurt and he's not dead. And before anyone says something, I did not add in that pun on purpose." Sirius added and I'll admit, I was going to say something.
"This is terrible." Remus stated. Everyone nodded in agreement. "James has only lost one Quidditch game, and it wasn't his fault."
"Imagine what this loss feels for him?" Peter added. "He was Seeker and he's captain."
"And he lost to my stupid brother." Sirius said and rolled his eyes, crossing his arms.
"Who's in Slytherin." Marlene said. "James lost to Slytherin." Alice, Frank and Peter gasped and Sirius turned white.
"I know it's Slytherin, but what's so bad about-" I started, then realised how stupid I was.
"You're new here Fall. Last time James lost a match was to Ravenclaw. In that match he was Chaser and Gryffindor had a pretty terrible Seeker, so you think it would be fine right?" Sirius explained and I nodded slowly. "But it wasn't. James hid in our dormitory for nearly a whole month and only came out for classes. He blamed himself for the whole thing."
"And now he lost to Slytherin, he was Seeker and he's captain. James will blame himself for everything, literally. He really takes Quidditch seriously, doesn't he?" Lily asked. The other three Marauders turned to her with wide eyes.
"Hang on, Evans, did you just address James as - James?" Sirius asked with a smirk. "And was that sympathy in your voice?"
Lily rolled her eyes. "No it wasn't. I was just saying."
"Quick! Someone grab her and take her to the Hospital Wing! We need to tell Prongs what just happened!"
"Does it matter, Black?!"
"Yes it does! It matters a lot! You care about James!"
"I don't!"
"Yes you do!"
"No I don't!"
"What matters is the fact that James is in the Hospital Wing and we should go check if he's okay!" Alice interrupted Sirius and Lily. Sirius sighed then nodded. We then walked back to the castle and to the Hospital Wing.
When we arrived at the Hospital Wing, I wasn't expecting what had happened. We spotted James sitting down on one of the beds and leaning against the bedhead. He saw us then looked in the other direction.
"Go away."
The other Marauders sighed then walked closer. "I said, go away." James repeated. His arm was in a cast and sling and he looked terrible. Well not exactly terrible, but he looked defeated which was even worse.
"James, we just wanted to check if you were okay-" Peter said but James quickly interrupted him.
"I'm not okay. I'm a failure."
"You're not a failure." Marlene stated. "You're overreacting-"
"Overreacting?! Overreacting?!" James yelled and glared at her. "I lost to Slytherin! Slytherin!!"
"You only lost because you were hit by a Bludger." I said, sitting in the chair beside his bed. "If you weren't hit with the bludger you would've won-"
"Yeah right. Admit it Fall, I'm just terrible at being a Seeker." James sulked then lay down. He turned away from us and pulled his blanket over his head.
"Terrible? You lose one match and you think you're terrible? Come on Potter, you're better then that." Lily stated and walked over to me. James stayed quiet after that.
"What happened though? What are the injuries?" Remus asked.
"Broken arm. He's lucky he wasn't too far from the ground." We turned around and saw Madam Pomfrey, who had her arms crossed. "And he is not allowed this many visitors at a time!"
"But what about his broom? Where is it?" Peter asked, ignoring Madam Pomfrey's statement.
"Well I assume it's still on the Pitch. Maybe all of you could go get it and leave Mr Potter to rest. Come on, all of you now."
"Oh come on Poppy, don't be like that." Sirius started. Madam Pomfrey raised an eyebrow at him. She was about to say something when James said,
"Just go guys. Come back later." We glanced at each other then sighed. We all mumbled a goodbye before walking off.
We walked to the Quidditch Pitch and to where James had crashed. "Let's try find James' broom as soon as we can." Sirius stated. "Let's split up-"
"You sound like this is a top secret mission." I stated with amusement and crossed my arms. "A very sirius mission."
He gave me a look which was a mix between a grin and a 'really?' look. "I should be proud of you, but we must start looking for the fallen broom." The others groaned and Sirius' grin grew wider and he threw his arm over my shoulders. "Actually, I am proud of you. Very proud. Siriusly proud-"
"Okay, enough with the puns." Remus said and Sirius took his arm off me. "Are we going to look for James' broom or not?"
"Don't you mean the fall-" Remus looked at me. "I'll stop now." I said and grabbed his hand. "I blame Sirius for all the puns."
Sirius gasped and put a hand on his chest, looking extremely offended. "What? You're the one that started it!"
"Oh shush Footsie." I grinned at him, causing him to make a face.
"I hate that nickname."
"I know. That's why I use it."
"It's better then Wolfie right?" Remus stated and looked at Sirius. He let go of my hand and instead put his arm around my shoulders.
"Actually it isn't." Sirius answered and crossed his arms. "Wolfie suits you, while Footsie doesn't suit me at all!"
"How does Wolfie suit me?"
"In many ways, Lupin. Many ways. But Footsie makes me sound like some sort of weird foot-"
"Weird foot? Very creative, Sirius."
"This is why I'm glad Izzy hasn't found a nickname for me yet." Peter stated, walking up to him.
"Show off." Sirius mumbled then clicked his fingers. "Your new annoying nickname shall be... Show... offy...?"
We stared at him and I patted Sirius' shoulder. "Leave the nicknames to me, honey."
"Okay, please don't ever call me honey again."
"I won't. It was weird to say."
"But isn't your nickname Bells?" Peter asked me and I rolled my eyes,
"Well, yes it is. But I don't like that nickname and only Remus calls me that-"
"You're right. Aren't you, Bells?" Remus asked and grinned. I glared at him slightly. "I like the nickname Bells."
"So do I." Sirius and Peter agreed in unison.
"Oh whatever." I muttered and started to walk away, but Remus grabbed my hand and pulled me back to him. He then kissed my cheek causing me to blush lightly.
"Am I forgiven?" He asked and smiled innocently at me. I looked at him then sighed with defeat.
"Fine. Sirius and Peter, I'll think about it."
"Oh come on! That's not fair!" Sirius exclaimed. "It's not like we can kiss you on the cheek to get you to forgive us!"
"And please do not."
"Yeah, please do not." Remus added, glaring at Sirius and Peter slightly.
"We weren't planning to, mate." Peter stated, putting his hands in the air. "She's all yours."
"So while you guys were arguing..." Lily started, running up to us. "About nicknames and kissing Isabel on the cheek or whatever...? We found James' broom." Alice and Marlene then ran up to us, Marlene was holding the broom that had been snapped in half and was only being held together by a few splinters.
"When James asks, say we all helped find his broom." Sirius said and pointed to all of us.
"Right, because that's the truth." Marlene said and rolled her eyes. "And why were you guys arguing about kissing Isabel's cheek?"
"Remus did something and she forgave him after he kissed her cheek." Peter explained and Marlene grinned slightly.
"So McKinnon, if I were to do something and-"
"Depends what the situation is Black." Marlene said, cutting Sirius off. She smirked and Sirius grinned, placing his arm over her shoulders and leaning against her.
"Reparo." Remus muttered and waved his wand at the broken broom, which had fixed instantly. He picked up the broom and turned to us. "Let's head back now." We nodded and walked back to the Hospital Wing.
We walked inside the Hospital Wing, making sure that Madam Pomfrey couldn't see us. We then made our way to James' bed. He looked a bit better now as he was sitting up, looking down at his fingers. He saw us and sighed.
"We found your broom." Sirius said. Remus fixed it for you." Sirius placed the broom in front of James. James ran his fingers along the wood and nodded.
"Thanks." He mumbled.
"You look a bit better now." Marlene stated, sitting down in the edge of the bed.
"That's not going to change anything."
"What do you mean?"
"I still lost." We sighed and Lily sat down on the other side of the bed. She waited for James to say something but he didn't. She sighed.
"You really are an idiot, Potter." Lily stated and James' eyes lit up.
"A charming one though?" He started and managed a small grin.
"If you call a broken arm a charm, then yeah, sure, champion." Lily smiled at him slightly and James now had a winning look on his face.
