Chapter 28 - Bribery
I jumped off the Hogwarts Express with Marlene, Alice and Lily when I heard,
"So she didn't tell you anything?"
"No."
"Are you sure?"
"Yes! See James, Sirius, this is why she didn't tell you."
"So she did tell you!"
"No Peter. She didn't."
"Then why do you keep saying, 'she didn't tell you.' "
"Because you three like to meddle in her business-"
"Oh my Merlin! She told you!"
"No she didn't." Remus rolled his eyes and walked faster from the Hogwarts Express, as the three other Marauders followed him. I watched them, trying to act normal. But then how do you act normal when you're trying to eavesdrop on people?
"Yes she did! She bribed you into not telling us! She bribed you with chocolate!"
I snorted and the girls looked at me.
Remus stopped abruptly and turned to Sirius. "What?"
"She brought all those sweets and bribed you with chocolate!"
"She didn't bribe me with chocolate-"
"Yes she did! It's happened before! James did it once!"
"Yeah, and so did Sirius, Peter," James continued. "Frank, Alice, Marlene-"
"Marlene?"
"Yeah, Marlene, why?" James raised an eyebrow at Sirius. Marlene looked around, hearing her name. I grinned slightly.
"What? Oh there she is, Isabel!!"
My eyes widened and I grabbed Lily's hand. "Oh we're going to have to hurry-"
"Why?" Lily questioned.
"Evans!!" James pushed through the crowd. Lily looked at him and her eyes widened, and before we knew it, she had made a run for it.
"Fall!" I sighed and turned around. Sirius and James ran over to us, followed closely by Peter and a very annoyed and unenthusiastic Remus Lupin.
"Yes?" I asked.
"We know what you did." Sirius said, pointing a finger at me.
"Why? What did I do?" I rolled my eyes.
"You bribed Remus with chocolate!!"
I laughed and Sirius crossed his arms. I stopped and stared at him. "Oh my god, you're seri- not joking."
"You told Remus how you burnt your arm then you bribed him with chocolate to not tell us!" James yelled.
"You burnt your arm!" Marlene and Alice said loudly in unison.
"No! Yes! It doesn't matter, Remus healed it." Remus smiled slightly and sighed.
"But how did you burn your arm?"
"By jumping into a river of course!" I yelled sarcastically. They sighed and I looked at the girls. "I'll tell you guys later." Marlene and Alice nodded.
"Why do they get to know?" Peter asked.
"Because they're not idiots." James and Sirius crossed their arms.
"Yeah well you're a-" Sirius stopped and thought for a minute. "Wait..."
"Don't say it." James whispered to him. "Remember what happened last year?"
"My hair was pink!!"
"My hair was purple!!"
"My hair was untouched!!" We turned to James, glaring at him furiously. "I'm going to go find Evans!!" Then he ran off as fast as he could before Sirius could murder him.
"Anyway, I think Marlene wants to ask you something." I said, pushing Marlene forward. She looked at me with confusion.
"What?" I mouthed the word, 'date' to her and her eyes widened.
"No no no!!"
"Sirius!" I grabbed Marlene and shoved her into Sirius. Marlene blushed rapidly, and I don't know if I was imagining it or not, but I swear I saw a tinge of red on Footsie's face.
"Um... what did you want to ask me?" Sirius stammered.
"Uh... Favourite animal?!" Alice and I face-palmed loudly. Marlene nodded slowly, like she was trying to convince herself. "Yeah... favourite animal."
Sirius grinned slightly. "Black dogs of course."
Remus and Peter groaned loudly, slapping their foreheads multiple times. Alice looked at them with confusion.
"I love black dogs!!" Marlene exclaimed. I groaned again, trying not to pull my hair out. "Especially that black dog that hangs around Hogsmede-"
"You mean Snuffles, right?" I asked.
"Shush." Sirius said, shooting me a look. He turned back to Marlene and grinned even more. "Yes that black dog... uh... Snuffles... yeah, he's cute isn't he?"
"Very." Marlene smiled.
"I agree, a lot."
"Hey, we're going to be late for the feast." Remus said loudly. Marlene and Sirius looked at him.
"Of course, after you Marlene." Sirius said like a proper gentleman. Marlene smiled and walked to the castle.
"We missed the carriages..." Alice muttered.
"Are we walking?" I asked, my eyes widening.
"Yep. Start walking Fall." Sirius stated, pushing me forward. "Follow Marlene's example."
I rolled my eyes and we all walked to the castle. "And you're so nice to Marlene, why is that?"
Sirius ignored me and ran off. "Hey McKinnon!"
Remus and I glanced at each other. "Is he okay?" I asked.
"Probably not." Remus shrugged and started to walk ahead of us.
"Does Sirius actually love black dogs?" Alice asked.
"He loves them so much, he might as well be one." Peter stated. I laughed, but Alice didn't seem to get the joke.

The next day we went to our first Potions class. Out of force of habit, I sat next to James.
"Hey Fall, how did you-"
"Hang on," I said, slowly realising. "It's a new year! I'm no longer your partner! I'm free! Bye Potter!" I grabbed my stuff and sat next to Lily, who was on the other side of the classroom.
"Oi Fall!!" James yelled. "Why are you so excited?!"
"Maybe because I don't have to sit next to you anymore?! That's an idea!"
"Nah, you're going to miss me you know that?!"
I laughed. "Yeah right! I feel like it's going to be the other way round!"
"No I'll be much happier over here while you're there! I don't have to listen to your ranting anymore!"
"Well I don't have to do all the work anymore while you're gawking at Lily!"
Lily frowned and looked at us. "What?"
"Yeah he was gawking at you. The joys of being good-looking, hey Evans?" I said, nudging her. Lily rolled her eyes.
"Well I don't want people like him gawking at me. Arrogant toe-rags, besides-"
"Oi Evans! I hear you're talking about me! Does that me you want to go out-"
"No Potter!" Lily yelled. "How many times do I have to say it?!"
"More than once apparently..." I mumbled and looked around. Lily rolled her eyes.
"Now class! Quiet down!" Professor Slughorn said loudly. Everyone slowly went quiet. "I assume you all did well in your OWL exams last year-"
"I only got Exceeds Exceptions." Marlene whispered to me. I frowned, I never got mine...
"Like always, you will all be partnered with someone completely different this year-"
"Yes! Thank you!" James and I yelled in unison. The whole class turned to us and rolled their eyes.
"Thank you Mr Potter and Ms Fall for that..." James and I shrugged. "I will be choosing your partners-"
"Hope I get someone good this year." I heard Sirius mutter as he leaned against his chair, making it balance on two legs.
"So, Ms McKinnon with Mr Lupin-"
Already Professor Slughorn was interrupted, by Sirius who had fallen off his chair. Many people laughed at him, me included.
"Thank you all for worrying about me." Sirius stated and got back up, shooting everyone a glare.
"Who said we were worried." I said loudly. "Did you break your back by any chance-"
"Oh shut your-"
"Mr Black and Ms Fall! May I continue?" Professor Slughorn said but continued anyway. "Mr Longbottom with Ms Black-" Alice's jaw dropped and she looked at both Frank Longbottom, her new boyfriend and Bellatrix Black. "Ms McDonald with Mr Pettigrew, Mr Malfoy and Mr Avery, Ms Fall and Mr Snape." I groaned and placed my head on the desk. "Mr Potter and Ms Evans and Ms Fortescue and Mr Black."
"Lucky b*tch..." Marlene said under her breath.
"Hey!" Alice said. "Remus isn't that bad!"
"I'm joking, I'm joking!"
"You know who's a b*tch?" I asked them. They looked at me. "Probably Snuffles."
"Why?" Lily questioned, after coming out of her trance. She had a look of horror on her face. I understand why.
"What? Snuffles is probably a female dog."
A paper ball hit my back, I turned around and saw Sirius glaring at me. I glared back when many paper balls hit me in the face.
"Go sit with your partners now!" Professor Slughorn. I rolled my eyes and looked around, my eyes landing on Snape. I stood up, pushing off all the paper balls on my desk. "You'll be looking at Amortentia today! Now who can answer, what is Amortentia?"
"Time to see Snivellus." I mumbled and walked over to him, passing James on the way, who had a triumphant smirk on his face as he sat next to Lily.
"That's quite right Ms McDonald! Amortentia is the most powerful love potion in the world. When used, the victim will have a terrible obsession of another person. As a result, Amortentia is one of the most dangerous potions you will work on. It also will smell like two or three things that you love the most."
I sat next to Snape and sighed. At the moment, I didn't know who was worse, James or Snape.
"Okay let's work on this Potion." I said and grabbed my book and my quill.
"How is she?" Snape asked. I looked up at him.
"Who?"
"Lily, how is she?"
I rolled my eyes. "Why would you care?"
"Because-"
"You're the one who broke the friendship. You're the one who called her that unforgivable word." I spat. "So don't come back and act like nothing happened because you hurt her, okay?"
Snape sighed. "I didn't mean to-"
I laughed humourlessly. "Sure you didn't."
"Look-"
"Listen, we need to work on this Potion. Say one more word about how you didn't hurt Lily and I will punch you... again."
Snape sighed and looked through his Potions book before starting to add ingredients. I sighed and looked around, everyone was groaning and trying to concentrate as two people kept arguing.
"I can't smell a damn thing!" I heard James exclaim. I turned around and saw him and Lily working together.
"I'm 100% sure I got this right!!" Lily said, flipping through her potions book.
"Well obviously not."
"Well perhaps I could actually smell something if you didn't use buckets of conditioner this morning!"
"You're one to talk! The amount of Rose perfume you're wearing is giving me an asthma attack!!"
I groaned. "Oh shut up..." I mumbled. They didn't hear me and continued to bicker loudly.
Once we were done making the potion we had to smell it and write an essay about the scents in the potion for homework. The bell went and I quickly sniffed the potion. New books, chocolate and some sort of very familiar flower.
"Our homework is to write an essay-" Snape started.
"I know what our homework is, thanks." I said and rolled my eyes. "What do you smell? Shampoo?"
He glared at me. "It's none of your business." I rolled my eyes and walked over to Marlene, Alice and Lily, who looked very angry.
"Hey Izzy, is it weird I smell a wet dog?" Marlene asked me. I frowned.
"A wet dog?" I repeated. She nodded. "No... not weird at all."
"What did you smell?"
I sighed. "New books, chocolate and some flower, I can't remember the name."
Marlene shrugged. "Can we go now, Lils?" Lily nodded and stormed out of the classroom.
"Is she okay?" Alice asked.
"It's James." I said. "Blame James."
"Understandable..." We walked out of the classroom and to the Great Hall, following Lily. We were almost passed the door when someone placed their arm on my shoulder and leaned against me. I groaned and turned around.
"Can you stop doing that?" I asked James, gritting my teeth. "I'm not that short."
"Again, you're shorter than me though, so I won't." James smirked. I moved out of the way, making him loose balance. Unfortunately, he recovered pretty quickly and stood up.
"What do you want?"
"Well we were wondering, Fall." Sirius started, appearing out of nowhere.
"They were wondering." Remus interrupted, pointing at James and Sirius, who rolled their eyes.
"We were wondering." James repeated. "What did you smell in the Amortentia potion?"
I frowned and looked at all four of them. "Why do you care?"
James and Sirius shrugged and Remus sighed.
"Again, they were wondering." He said again. "Honestly, they came up to me and were like, 'Hey Moony, what do you think Isabel smells in the Amortentia potion?' "
"And I said, 'Ask her.' " Peter added.
I nodded and narrowed my eyes at James and Sirius. "Again, why do you care?"
They shrugged again and Sirius said. "Curiosity. Maybe so we can tease you about it."
"Fine, I won't tell you then." I was about to walk off but Sirius grabbed my arm. I turned around furiously. "I'll tell you if you let go of me."
Sirius sighed and let go of my arm. I sighed.
"I smelt, new books-"
Sirius coughed. "Wow," He coughed again. "Shocker."
I glared at him then at James, who was trying very hard not to laugh.
"Do you want me to continue?"
"Yes please." James said, a stupid grin in his face.
I rolled my eyes. "Chocolate-"
The three Marauders looked at Remus, who once again was trying to get something from his bag.
"What?" Remus asked with annoyance. His eyes widened. "Oh! No no- no offence Izzy-"
"None taken. And I do not like you in that way-"
"If you smelt chocolate then that could only lead to-" Peter said.
"No!" I yelled quickly. "I like chocolate as much as he does!!"
"Yeah sure... is that it?" Sirius asked.
"And some sort of flower..." I thought for a minute, trying to remember.
"Roses?" Sirius suggested.
"Lilies?" James smirked. We groaned.
"Daisies?" Peter added.
"Definitely not!" I yelled, they jumped and looked at me.
"What's wrong with daisies?" Remus questioned.
"My mum loves daisies, she fills the house with them... Daisies kind of remind of my father..."
"Oh..."
"Before in America, my sister, Sophia used to choose the flowers..." My eyes widened. "Moonflowers."
"Moonflowers?"
"That's the flower I smelt! Moonflowers!" I smiled. "I love Moonflowers! I haven't seen one in ages..."
"So that's it then?" James asked. "New books," He bit his lip and you could tell he was trying not to grin. "Chocolate and Moonflowers?"
"Yep. So there's a hint for my future boyfriend." I said and walked over to the girls.
"Yeah... wait what do you mean 'future boyfriend'?" Sirius asked loudly.
"What? I'm not going to be single forever!"
"But who do you have in mind?" James added. I frowned.
"Again, why the bloody hell do you care?"
