Chapter 14: You Look Flushed

Hey, Mon," Lucia smiled. "Where are you off to?"

"A date with Jonah."

"Ooh," Lucia grinned. "Where's he takin' ya?"

"I don't know. He said it was somewhat casual. Do you like what I'm wearing?" Monica smiled, spinning around.

"You look beautiful."

"Thank you," Monica smiled brighter.

Lucia chuckled. "Go. You don't want to be late."

Monica nodded and left the kitchen. There was a knock on the door and she checked her hair in the foyer mirror before opening it.

"Hey there, beautiful," Jonah grinned.

"Hi, handsome. You ready?" Monica smiled.

"Yep," Jonah nodded.

"So, where are you taking me?" Monica chuckled.

"There's a Italian restaurant."

"Oh, I love Italian!"

Jonah smiled more. "Awesome. Let's go."

Monica nodded and got into the car.

"Ready?"

"Yep," Monica nodded, fidgeting nervously with the ring on her finger.

Jonah started the car. With a little smile, he pulled out of the driveway and drove to the restaurant. "So," he said softly, "what's it like to live with your best friend and her boyfriend?"

"It's not too bad. He's very nice."

"That's good," Jonah nodded. "Their constant kissing doesn't get annoying, though?"

"It's not constant."

"Well, I'm happy that they found each other."

"Good. I am glad you feel that way," Monica smiled.

Jonah smiled and kissed her cheek. "So, I was thinking...maybe we could go for a walk through the park after."

"Sure. I'd like that."

"Perfect," Jonah smiled.

"Thanks for doing this, Jonah."

"Thanks for saying yes."

"My crush asks me out and I'd say no? Doesn't sound like me."

"Ooh, your crush," Jonah teased.

Monica giggled nervously.

Jonah pulled into a parking space and they went in and sat together.

"So, what do you usually get here?" Jonah asked as he read the menu.

"Usually pasta carbonara."

"I always get the lasagna. It's out of this world," Jonah nodded.

"I might sneak a bite?"

"Of course," Jonah smiled.

Monica giggled. "All it took was for me to say yes to a date to snag a bit of your meal?"

"Yep," Jonah chuckled.

Monica smiled brightly and ordered a frozen raspberry lemonade when the waitress came over.

Jonah ordered a Dr. Pepper and some breadsticks. "So, do you like working at the coffee shop?"

"I do. It's a lot of fun."

"I've been thinking about getting a job there," Jonah nodded. "I already hate working at the zoo."

"Why? What's the problem?"

"It's stupid."

"Tell me. Now I'm interested."

"I got laughed at."

"Why?"

"I spilled my coffee all over my shirt...and then a monkey laughed at me."

Monica smiled a little.

"I hate monkeys," Jonah muttered.

"It's just a monkey. I don't think you should be embarrassed."

"It wasn't just one. It was a whole cage of em just making fun of me."

"Oh, Jonah," Monica smiled, patting his hand. "It's okay."

"But if I get a job at Java Shot, I can work with you," Jonah smiled.

"Yes, but that means all four of us would be working there. But I mean, who knows where Lucia will move?"

"You think she'd leave us and move to Montana with Sean?"

"I don't know. People do crazy things when they are in love. She had talked about it when he first proposed."

"Well, I know you'd miss her terribly, so I hope she convinces Sean to stay," Jonah said with a small smile.

The waitress brought out their drinks. "Are you both ready to order?"

Monica nodded and ordered, as did Jonah. "So," he smiled, "have you seen any good movies lately?"

"No, not really," Monica shrugged, sipping her drink.

"I saw the new Aladdin last week," Jonah nodded. "It was very good. Maybe we could go together sometime. I think you'd like it."

Monica nodded. "I love Aladdin."

"Yeah?" Jonah smiled. "Me too. A little more than I'd like to admit."

"Why? Because it's Disney?"

"No, because a grown man should not have memorized the lyrics to every song in the movie," Jonah chuckled.

"It means you're sensitive."

"It means I'm a dork with too much time on my hands."

"I like sensitive guys."

"Really?" Jonah smiled.

"Yeah," Monica smiled back.

"Gosh, you look gorgeous." Jonah bit his lip slightly.

Monica smiled, but began to itch her neck a bit.

"Are you alright?"

"Yeah, I'm fine."

"Alright," Jonah nodded. "I'm hungry. What about you?"

Monica nodded. "Me too. I was so excited that I skipped lunch."

Jonah chuckled slightly. "I haven't eaten a thing all day."

"What? Why not?"

"I was too nervous about tonight."

Monica laughed happily.

"So...I'm really bad at small talk," Jonah laughed nervously.

"Me too," Monica nodded, continuing to itch.

Jonah frowned slightly. "You're itching an awful lot. Are you okay?"

"I should be fine."

"Monica, what's going on?"

She furrowed her brows and swallowed, finding it hard to do so. "I don't know. I only get a reaction to peppermint and my drink shouldn't have any. Here, taste it." She slid it forward.

Jonah sipped her drink. "That isn't a frozen lemonade," he frowned. "It don't know what it is, but I definitely taste mint."

Monica swallowed again.

"Do I need to take you to the hospital?"

"No. I'm okay."

"Are you sure?" Jonah frowned. "You look flushed."

Monica nodded and grasped his hand. "Can you take me home? I have allergy medication."

"Yeah, yeah, of course," Jonah said quickly, standing up. "Let's go."

"Oh, but our order."

"That doesn't matter."

Monica nodded as Jonah helped her up.

He kissed her forehead and wrapped an arm around her as they walked out of the restaurant. "Are you doing okay?"

"I think so. It's just hard to swallow."

"Okay. Just don't panic, alright?" Jonah said softly. "It's only a few minutes to your house."

Monica nodded and whispered, "Sorry."

"Shh. It's okay."

"I am sorry it had to happen."

Jonah kissed her cheek. "It's alright. Don't worry."

Monica sighed.

Jonah helped her into the car and drove quickly to her house. "Do you want me to go in with you?"

Monica nodded. "But I'll have Lucia help me."

Jonah nodded and helped her out, wrapping an arm around her.

They stepped inside and Lucia came out when Monica called for her. "What's wrong?" She frowned.

"I need my medicine," Monica whispered, reached for her friend.

Lucia took her hands and brought her to the kitchen before having her sit down. "What happened?"

"I had mint."

"Oh dear god, why?" Lucia frowned.

"It was an accident. They gave me the wrong drink."

"Oh gosh," Lucia sighed. "Where's your medicine?"

"In my top dresser drawer."

Lucia nodded and quickly retrieved the medication. "Here you go."

Monica took it and sighed. "Ruined my date."

"I'm sure it didn't ruin anything."

"I wanted to be happy tonight. He finally found me."

"Then go and have some fun."

"The medication won't fully work until later."

"So?"

"I won't be able enjoy myself."

"Well, at least go say goodnight to Jonah, then."

Monica nodded and went out. "Jonah? Can I walk you out?"

"You don't want to go out?"

Monica sighed and took his hand as they walked out. "I wish I could but I don't feel well."

"We could always find a movie on Netflix and order take out and just stay here," Jonah smiled.

"You'd do that?"

"Of course," Jonah nodded, kissing her forehead. "I just want to go on a date with you. I don't care where we go or what we do."

Monica smiled and hugged him. "Alright. Works for me. I'll tell Lucia to go."

"Okay," Jonah chuckled as they went back inside.

"Lucia? Can you and Sean go out?"

"I knew this would happen one day," Lucia sighed dramatically. "Sean, we're going out."

"I don't want to," Sean whined.

"Sean, we are going out. Grab your coat."

He huffed. "Why?"

Lucia pressed her lips into his. "That's why. Come on, let's go."

Sean smiled. "Alright."

Lucia guided him out the door.

The remaining pair sat on the couch, and Jonah wrapped an arm around Monica. "So...I'm assuming we're not getting take out from the Italian place," he chuckled. "What are you in the mood for? Indian? Chinese? Pizza? Chinese pizza? I have no idea what that last one is, but we could get creative."

"Normal pizza sounds fine," Monica chuckled.

Jonah ordered the pizza and then sat back down next to her. "What would you like to watch?"

"Comedy?"

"I'm down."

Monica turned on a movie.

"I love The Emperor's New Groove," Jonah grinned. "Great choice."

"It's my favorite."

Jonah wrapped an arm around her. "You seem cold."

"A little," Monica shrugged.

Jonah grabbed a blanket and placed it around her shoulders before wrapping both arms tightly around her. "Warm yet?" He chuckled.

"I will be."

"You feel a bit better?"

"Much."

"Good," Jonah smiled, kissing her cheek.

Monica smiled back at him and pressed a gentle kiss to his lips.

"You're an amazing person, Mon," Jonah said softly.

"Only average," she shrugged.

"Nah," Jonah smiled, kissing her gently. "You're definitely amazing."

Monica smiled.

"You're beautiful. You know that?"

She shrugged. "I don't know."

Jonah stroked her arm gently. "You know...I'm sort of glad we didn't stay at the restaurant."

"Yeah?"

"Yeah," Jonah smiled.

"Because we can cuddle?"

"Yep," Jonah grinned. "And I can kiss you without a table in the way."

Monica laughed.

"Mon...I think you're really special."

"We haven't been dating long. How can you tell?" Monica asked softly.

"Because we've been friends for three years."

Monica rested her head on his shoulder as they watched the movie.
