Chapter Three//Rejected

"Dadddd, I'm dressed and ready to go", I screamed from downstairs. I couldn't believe my dad wasn't done dressing up. I literally came in after him.

"I'm coming! Gimme like 5 minutes", my dad shouted back.

I huffed and sat on the sofa in the living room. I pulled my phone out and started playing a game while I waited. I didn't like to be alone with my thoughts lately so I preferred to be occupied with something but right now the game isn't doing much to distract me from my thoughts.

Someone rang the doorbell. Who could it be? Just as I made to get up from the sofa and check who, I heard my sister Diamond sprinting downstairs and screaming "I'll get it! That's mine!"

Ohh, my sister's new bestie was visiting this Saturday.

Just as my sister opened the door, my dad came downstairs and said, "Alright I'm ready. Let's go."

"Hi. My name is Billie. I'm Diamond's friend from school", I looked up to see a black-haired girl with heterochromatic eyes. She was really pretty. I was sure she would grow up to be even prettier. She was around Diamond's height and seemed nervous yet I could sense a commanding aura that would grow as she grew up.

"Hello, Billie. Nice to meet you", my dad said, "have fun with Diamond today okay? "

"Thank you", she replied.

"This is my big sister, Lauretta", Diamond said to Billie

"Hi Lauretta", Billie said smiling slightly.

"Hey Billie, nice to meet you", I said with a small wave.

"Bye guys", Diamond said while dragging Billie to her room.

"Bye", Dad and I said in unison.

.

I don't play golf or even know anything about it. I only know that it was a game that involves putting a ball in a hole with a puck-like stick. I don't know the rules, I know absolutely nothing. Yet, I love following my dad to the golf course.

I had always begged him since I was little to take me with him to his golf games, but he never agreed. One day when I was 14, he agreed and since then I followed him almost every Saturday to his golf games.

I mostly sat and watched them with music in my ear because there usually aren't any other kids my age and the adults always spent time talking to each other even though I usually don't mind. Saturdays are therapeutic for me.

Today wasn't any different, I sat with music in my ear watching the men take turns while arguing loudly about politics, education and so many controversial topics. Tyler's dad is my dad's friend but he never came with his dad to the course so I've never seen him.

However, today took a big shocker as I looked up and saw Tyler stepping out of the car with his dad. I almost choked on the smoothie I was sipping.

He didn't notice me when he got down from the car. He just leaned on the car looking annoyed. It seemed like his dad had dragged him here, literally, because he was just in sweatpants and a tank top.

I didn't know whether to walk up to him to say hi or to wait for him to notice me. I debated it in my head for a while and just when I made my decision, I saw Tyler walking towards me, he had noticed me already.

"Hey. Lauretta, right?", he said and sat down to my right.

"Yeah! Hey!", I said. That was one of the things I found attractive about Tyler, he noticed people, he made everyone feel seen, he never overlooked anybody and he never forgot names.

"Do you come here all the time or?", he asked as he squinted at the sun and put on his sunglasses.

"Yeah, I come with my dad", I replied and pointed to my dad who was currently taking his turn.

"Oh nice, you golf?"

"Nah, I don't even know anything about golfing except that it involves putting a ball in a hole with the aid of a stick.", I replied with a slight chuckle.

"Oh so why do you come?", Tyler asked raising one of his eyebrows, even though it wasn't so obvious because of the glasses he wore.

"I like it here. Just watching them play while I relax. I find it relaxing."

"Oh.", was all Tyler said. I know it didn't make sense to him which was fine, a lot of people don't get me.

"Why are you here today?", I asked this time.

"My dad made me come. He says that I'm a growing man and connections like this are important. ", Tyler said and with the way he said it, I was pretty sure he was rolling his eyes behind the shades he had on.

"Maybe he just wants father-son time ", I  said chuckling, "fathers never really know how to ask for that so they make up weird excuses."

"I doubt that but if that's true then his idea of us bonding is quite dumb cos I don't see any bonding going on here."

I laughed at that. I spent the next hour talking to Tyler and getting to know him a little more. The more I spent time with him, the more my crush on him intensified. He's really smart and knows a lot about a lot, my favourite quality in a guy.

"So, are you going for the tryouts?", he asked.

"Yeah. I wanna see if I can make it."

"I don't think you should cos Linda and Sophia can be something else at times."

Before I could even respond, I was cut off.

"Alright, let's go have lunch at my house", Tyler's dad exclaimed.

"Told you it wasn't about any stupid bonding", Tyler said as he got up and stretched.

He turned and held his hand out for me and said, "Let's go."

I burst into a million butterflies with that gesture.

Tyler hadn't even for once mentioned what he heard in the cafeteria about my crush on him and that just intensified my feelings for him. Tyler was truly a gem.

.

"And then I looked at him and told him that he would need ten to get the one", Tyler's dad said while hitting the table and laughing, every single person joined in except Tyler and I

I wasn't even sure what the joke was about but I was sure it involved women and it was misogynistic but the kind of misogynistic acceptable of that generation.

"We need two more bottles of wine...", Tyler's dad started before Tyler cut in.

"Lauretta and I will go get it Dad", Tyler cut in and grabbed my arm before anybody could respond and we rushed out.

"God if I hear any dry joke about women or anything again, I might as well just shoot myself", Tyler said as he rested on the kitchen's counter.

I laughed before adding, "What do you mean Tyler? Don't you need ten to get the one?"

Tyler just rolled his eyes at me and cracked a smile. I was sure my heart stopped with that gesture. Everything about Tyler was light.

"Anyways, let's actually get the wine before my dad loses it."

We walked into a storage room which was linked to the kitchen. It was fairly big. The light in the room flickered but not in a creepy horror movie way.

After searching, we found the brand that was being drunk on the table in a far corner of the store.

"Finally.", Tyler said while cleaning the dust off it with a napkin in the kitchen.

"Well, Give me one.", I said and as I stretched my hand to collect the wine, I touched Tyler's hand that was holding the wine. Immediately that happened, I  looked up but Tyler was not looking at me, he was looking at the wine.

Then I did the unthinkable and kissed him. He paused, I paused. It felt like everything was put in slow motion and that it took like 30 minutes but in reality, it happened in about 5 seconds.

Tyler recovered first, he put his guard up and dropped the wine on the kitchen counter for me to pick up.

"You know I'm in a relationship, Lauretta. What was that? I was beginning to see you as a friend."

"I'm sorry", was all I could say.

"It's fine, let's go give them the wine.", Tyler said while walking away.

I knew it wasn't fine. I had completely embarrassed myself. I hate myself when I do stupid things like this. I just ruined a prospective friendship.

I just sighed and picked up the wine and made my way back to the noise in the dining room. Tyler avoided my gaze till lunch ended and I left with my dad.
