It's What You Do to Me (19)
My darling Delilah,
So, you’ve broken up with your lovely fiancé River, have you? What a shame. I really thought your relationship was going to last, but then again I’m not very surprised that it ended. At least now I have you all to myself. How excited I am, Delilah. How excited I am… j
It’s What You Do to Me, Delilah
This was absolutely ridiculous.
It’d never end, I finally decided. It would just keep going on and on until I finally died a sad old woman, all alone with no one to love me…
Okay, I was overreacting, but could you blame me? After everything that had been happening, I think I kind of had the right to overreact.
I made a face, wanting to slam my locker door as hard as I possibly could. Now he was putting the letters in my locker? That was new. And even creepier.
“So, you go out with the Seth guy, but not me?” a new voice suddenly asked, causing me to jump and shove the note under a few books in my locker. “Why not me?”
“Seth’s a nice guy,” I informed him snottily, almost slamming my locker shut. “Unlike you.”
“Ouch.”
“It’s the truth.”
“I can be a nice guy, you know,” he smirked, crossing his arms over his chest as he leaned against the locker next to mine. “I’m not always this rich, talented, famous, and handsome. Hard to believe, I know.”
“Seth also doesn’t have a psycho for a sister,” I noted, ignoring his conceited comment.
Seth did have a sister though, and I wondered if he was trying to get into contact with. She hadn’t spoken to him since he was in middle school… I felt so bad for him. Even though I was in a fight with Jake, it’d break my heart if he didn’t want to speak to me. And now that I thought of it… Did he even want to talk to me anymore?
“Come on, Delilah,” Jay asked, stepping closer to me now. I took a step back, not wanting to be anywhere near him. “Why don’t we just have a little fling? If you like where it feels, and I’m sure you will, we’ll just keep going until we’re tired of each other.”
“I’m already tired of you,” I snapped, taking another step away from him.
Before I could say anything else to him, his lips were suddenly on mine. Letting out a squeak, I quickly pushed him away from me, wiping my lips with the back of my hands.
“Gross!”
“You liked it.”
“I did not!”
“Wow, you’re just trying to hook up with everybody, aren’t you?”
The new voice caused me to jump high into the air, whipping around as quickly as I could. My eyes widened when I saw River, bruise and all.
“Well, I guess I’ll see you around then, Delilah,” Jay smirked, bumping my shoulder as he walked passed me. “See you in homeroom.”
My life was never going to be easy. I thought that after Mr. Higginson had been caught and put in jail, everything would be okay. But of course it wasn’t…
“Thanks for the bruise,” River thanked sarcastically when I turned back to my locker.
“You’re lucky all I did was throw a book at your face,” I snapped at River after school after he had come up to me at my locker. Slamming my locker shut, I turned away from him and started away. I didn’t want to talk to him when he was like this. I had to find a way to have him get his memory back.
When he grabbed my arm and pulled me back toward him, I almost smirked at the dark bruise that stained his eyebrow and temple. As much as I didn’t want to, I hoped it hurt.
“Don’t think I’m going to let you just get off for doing this to both Kendra and me,” he spat, his grip on my arm tightening a little. “I’m not going to believe anything you say about me being your fiancé.”
“Just because you and Kendra agreed to get married when you were little doesn’t mean that you have to marry her,” I informed him, as if he didn’t know. “That was ten years ago. Ten years ago! You were a child; you both were! Don’t be an idiot and listen to someone else besides your master!”
“You’re insane,” River scowled, ripping his hand away from me. “How am I supposed to trust someone I can’t even remember? I remember Kendra.”
“Because you met her when you were a kid!” I shouted, gaining the attention of a few people in the hallway. Normally I hated this kind of attention, but I didn’t even care right then. If I had to scream my heart out there, I’d scream my heart out there. Everyone knew we weren’t together anymore anyway. They didn’t know the reason, but they knew River and I had broken up. “You met me barely a year ago!”
“Which is probably why I’m marrying Kendra.”
“You don’t remember anything?” I demanded, wanting to pull my hair out right then and there. “You don’t remember how you asked me to marry you at the beach, or how you hit your father after he tried to hit me? You don’t even remember that your dad’s stopped hitting you? You don’t even remember about Mr. Higginson!”
“Mr. Higginson?” he asked, a scowl still on his face.
“Oh, my God,” I gasped, covering my face with my hands. “I can’t believe you don’t remember. I can’t believe you can’t remember! I feel like I’m going to puke…”
River took a step away from me, and I wanted to roll my eyes at him.
“I still don’t believe you,” River informed me snootily, and I really wanted to slap him. “How do Kendra and I have matching wedding rings then?”
“She stole my ring!” I shouted once again.
River rolled his eyes. “Sure. How could someone steal a ring that’s always on your finger?”
I felt my fists clench at my side. How could Kendra change him so much? It had only been a few weeks… River was sweet and kind, not a jerk like this! How could she change him so much? She had to have been telling him lies about me! He wouldn’t have hated me for no reason!
“How do you think you got that scar on your chest?” I demanded now, ignoring his question. If I had been paying attention, Kendra wouldn’t have stolen it from me. But I was worried about River! I was crying and sobbing because he could have died! “How do you think I even know about the scar on your chest?”
“Kendra told me it was from another car accident,” River informed me with a shrug, crossing his arms over his chest as he had done so. “And my records showed that I had been in another car accident before.”
Damn it. That was the car accident that we were in before! It was the car accident that Mr. Higginson had caused! River got knocked out, but he came out with barely a scratch. I was the one in the worst condition! He was almost perfectly fine!
“You know what?” I snapped, now having enough of him. If this was how he was going to act toward me, I didn’t want anything to do with him. “I’ve had enough. When you finally remember the truth, and not what that bitch told you, then come talk to me. Until then… Goodbye, River.”
Saying that broke my heart. I couldn’t just say goodbye to him… I loved him way too much. But I was going to have to find a way to get his memory back, even if it killed me. I had to show him that Kendra was lying and everything I was saying was true.
When I walked into my dorm room, I was ambushed in a tight hug that caused me to squawk out in surprise. I did not expect to get attacked like this, but I immediately knew who it was.
“Why are you in my room?” I asked the annoying blonde.
“Because I love you, Deli Sandwich!”
“That's joyous.”
When he finally let me go, I felt like I could breathe again. Looking around the room, I could see that Seth and Alice were inside as well, not that that really surprised me. Wherever Rex went, Alice and Seth were with him. The other way around, too.
“Do we have mouthwash?” I asked before any of them could speak, dumping my backpack by my bed before walking over to the bathroom. “I need it.”
“Under the sink,” Alice informed me from her bed, sounded confused. “Why do you need it?”
“Jay kissed me.”
“He kissed you?” Alice squawked, almost falling off her bed as she quickly ran into the bathroom to join me. I knew that Seth and Rex were by the door listening. “The crazy slut’s brother actually kissed you?”
“Yeah,” I answered, making a face as I crouched down and grabbed the mouthwash from under the sink. “It was just so gross. He thought I liked it.”
“You should have,” Alice sighed, shaking her head at me as she crossed her arms over her chest. “He’s a famous movie star! Why would you not enjoy that kiss?”
“Because he’s a pig,” I answered flatly before gargling as much mouthwash as my mouth would let me. After spitting it out, I continued, “But that’s not even the best thing that happened.”
“What else?” Alice demanded.
“I ran into River and we just fought,” I sighed, shrugging as I put the mouthwash back under the sink. “I told him I wanted nothing to do with him until he got his memory back. I don’t think he had a problem with that, though. So… whatever.”
“Whatever?” she shouted, her hand flying to her forehead. “You have to fight!”
I rolled my eyes. “I don’t have the energy to fight anymore,” I informed her, not wanting to fight right then either. I walked out of the bathroom and towards my bed. “He probably hates me even more because of what happened this morning.”
“What happened?” Rex asked me before Alice could.
I explained to Rex what River had said about all of us and how I had thrown a book at him, leaving a bruise. He looked shocked and amused, but I wasn’t very surprised by that.
“He did what? That doesn’t sound like River at all!”
“He isn’t River anymore,” Seth sighed as he crossed his arms over his chest, leaning against the wall next to my bed. “He’s the psycho bitch’s little puppet.”
“Is that your nickname for her now?” Alice asked, rolling over so she was now lying on her back. “Psycho bitch?”
Seth crossed his arms over his chest, pouting just a little. “Maybe.”
“But that isn’t like River,” Rex continued on, almost falling off my desk chair. “Even if he lost his memory, he’s still the same person. And River would never say something like that. He only speaks his mind to people he thinks he’s close to…”
“What are you saying?” I inquired, raising an eyebrow as I sat up from my lying position on my bed.
“I think he knows deep down that he has some sort of attachment to you,” Rex explained, crossing his arms over his chest as he tried to look like some sort of big shot. “Yeah, what he said to you was rude and everything, but don’t you remember how he acted when he first met you? He wasn’t friendly at all, but he was always attracted to you. So maybe that’s just repeating itself.”
“River never said anything like this to me,” I reminded him flatly, crossing my own arms over my chest. “He just ignored me. It’s different now.”
“Not that different,” Rex disagreed, shaking his head slowly. “River’s not the type that lets people get close to him that easily. But River remembers his childhood, so therefore he remembers Kendra. And he must have had feelings for her when they were little if he agreed to marry her.”
“So you’re saying he probably has feelings for her now then?” I swallowed, feeling my stomach completely drop.
Rex frowned. “It’s a possibility.”
As I scrubbed at my eyes, Seth snapped at his best friend with, “Will you stop making her feel worse?”
When Seth put his arm around me, I didn’t push him away. I hadn’t been with River for weeks, and I just wanted someone to comfort me. And if that person was Seth, then that was perfectly fine with me.
“You have a girlfriend, in case you forgot!” Rex teased from across the room, and I really felt like hitting him for it, even though I didn’t know why. Seth chucked a pillow at him, but Rex unfortunately caught it before it could hit him in the head. “I’m just telling you!”
“No duh I have a girlfriend, you idiot,” Seth snapped once again, glaring at the blonde as Alice grinned. She always thought it was funny when they fought like this. “Maybe you could be a good friend and try to comfort her instead of making her feel worse.”
“Okay, just stop fighting,” I almost shouted before Rex could say anything more back to his brunette friend. “I’ve had enough with fighting, alright?”
Rex frowned. “Okay. I get it.”
Alice was frowning as well, and I didn’t even have to look up at Seth to know he was frowning as well. It was a total frown-fest as we waited for someone to speak.
Suddenly, an idea struck me. I jumped up from my bed before shouting, “I think I have another idea to get River’s memory back!”
“Yeah?” Alice asked, swinging her legs over the bed as she stared at me intently now. “What?”
I smirked, grabbing my coat before heading toward the door. “You’ll see. I’ll be right back!”
*~~~~~*~~~~~*~~~~~*~~~~~*~~~~~*~~~~~*~~~~~*~~~~~*~~~~~*~~~~~*~~~~~*~~~~~*~~~~~*~~~~~*~~~~~*~~*
“What a surprise to see you here,” a voice said from behind me, causing me to jump up in fright and let out a shout. Out of all people, I wasn’t expecting him to show up…
Well, then again, I kind of did.
“Hello, Avery,” I greeted, trying to stay as calm as possible. What did I ever really see in him? Yes, he was cute, but too… friendly looking. Like, you knew he was going to be trouble because he just looked too nice. Too much like a prep.
But I couldn’t really say very much, since I was a prep as well.
“Are you looking for someone in particular or are you just wandering around?” Avery asked, crossing his arms over his chest as he stood a few inches away from me. “Where’s your fiancé?”
I wasn’t about to tell him that River and I were pretty much broken up now, because I knew he’d laugh at me and think his relationship with Bekka was better. But I knew that it totally wasn’t. Once River got his memory back, everything would go back to normal and our relationship would be so much better than theirs…
Wow. I can’t believe I’m getting competitive with something like this. How stupid.
“River’s back at Arkwright,” I answered, not giving any kind of clue that there was a huge problem. “And I’m actually looking for your girlfriend.”
“Why are you looking for Bekka?” he asked, his eyebrows furrowing in confusion. I was sure that he knew Bekka and I couldn’t stand each other…
“Secret,” I shrugged, still not wanting to give anything away.
Avery rolled his eyes at me, his arms still crossed over his chest. “Well, I guess you’re in luck. Because here she comes, all ready to go on a date with me.”
“Well, postpone it,” I said quickly, inching away from him to where Bekka was walking. “Because I need to borrow Bekka.”
“And why is that?”
“Secret,” I hissed, drawing out the word before spinning around and pretty munch sprinting all the way to where Bekka was.
She glared at me, but I didn’t really blame her. We weren’t exactly on good terms.
“Is there something you need?” she demanded, her hands on her hips. “Or do you just like to waste my time? I have a date, you know.”
I quickly explained that I needed her help and she had to come to Arkwright and try to get River’s memory back. I explained about the car crash and the faulty tire, and how Kendra had stolen my ring and told River that they were going to get married right after senior year ended.
Bekka continued to glare at me. “And why should I help you?”
“Because you’re a good person.”
“Even I know that isn’t true,” she sneered, crossing her arms over her chest and cocking her hip out to the side.
“Come on, Bekka,” I almost pleaded, ready to get on my hands and knees if I had to. So what if I looked like an idiot? I needed River back before it was too late! What would happen if he married Kendra and then got his memory back twenty years later? I’d probably be married with kids, and he’d be the same… I didn’t even want to think about that. “He used to be your boyfriend. Can’t you just show a little sympathy and help me out?”
“Why should I help you out?” she asked, her arms tightening over her chest. “You’re my boyfriend’s ex-girlfriend. You lied to him for your entire relationship about who you were and your friends and family. You cheated on him with his old best friend--”
“Oh, don’t even start with that,” I snapped, my arms crossing over my chest now. “He was the one who cheated with Marnie when they were actually best friends. You can’t compare me to that.”
Her eyes narrowed. “I just did.”
“I need your help,” I continued desperately. “Come on, Bekka.”
“Why should I help out a liar like you?”
“At least I didn’t go out with him just because his hair was two different colors,” I snapped, mimicking her by crossing my arms over my chest. “And yeah, I lied to Avery, but that saved his life. If we really got serious my stalker would have hunted him down and tried to kill him like he did to River.”
Bekka rolled her eyes. “Yeah, yeah, yeah. Your life is just so horrible because you got stalked. Ha! There are worst things in life than that.”
“Really?” I asked, placing my hands on my hips now. “The love of my life almost got killed, my friends almost got killed, I almost died, and I had been harassed for the first three years of high school. What problems do you have that are worse than that?”
“I may not have problems worse than that, but other people have way more problems than you.”
“I’m sure they do.”
“I’m not helping you,” Bekka informed me snottily, turning away from me and starting away. “I don’t like River, I don’t like you, so I’m not going to do anything that would benefit you or him.”
“Please, Bekka,” I begged, running around and cutting her off before she could get too far away. “I need to get River’s memory back. He’s not himself anymore, and I need your help. Please. You’re the reason he changed once, maybe you can be the reason he changes again.”
Bekka stared at me for a second, as if she didn’t know who I was. I guess it was a little weird; I didn’t think I would ever be begging Bekka Stewart to do something for me. But I was desperate, and I needed her help. I needed to get River’s memory back.
“Fine,” she gave in, still glaring daggers at me. “I’ll do it. But not because I like you or anything. Don’t think we’re friends now or anything.”
I smiled at her, sticking out my hand. “Alright.”
She looked at my hand for a second, as if she didn’t know what to do. Rolling her eyes, she clutched onto it and shook a few good times before letting it go as quickly as she could.
Not that that really bothered me, though. I didn’t want to be anywhere near Bekka Stewart either.
Our feelings were definitely mutual.
“Now what if he doesn’t remember me?” Bekka asked me now. That was a possibility, wasn’t it? I didn’t even think about that… “What are we going to do then?”
I sighed. “I have absolutely no idea,” I answered truthfully.
“You suck at making plans.”
“Thanks, Bekka.”
“You’re welcome.”
I knew she was being sarcastic right back, so I didn’t even try to tell her that I wasn’t being serious, because I knew she knew. And I wasn’t about to lose her when she had already agreed to help me. And unfortunately, now I owed Bekka. A lot. Well… then again, only if it worked.

I'm sorry this took so long. I just went back to school on Thursday, and it's been pretty nerve-racking.
This story isn't going to be as long as Hey There, Delilah. I don't exactly know how long it'll be, but it definitely won't be forty chapters like Hey There, Delilah was.
