• Chapter Three •
The feeling had grown stronger ever since he started learning time travel. Every night, he would awake to a sharp feeling of ice creeping up his body, swallowing him whole. He wanted to ask Commander Grey about it, considering he was also a Time Traveler, but he was a little too afraid to even try.
Bailey sat up, grasping his arms to his chest. His heart was beating so fast, it felt as if it might leap out of his body. He could feel the ice crawling up from the tips of his toes. Bailey almost wished to call out in pain, but Drew was only a room away and he didn't want to wake him up.
Yanking his blanket from his body, Bailey found no visible ice, but the feeling of it was there. 'What is going on?' He thought, feeling panic starting to arise. Crawling out of bed, a wave of pain shot from his feet causing him to fall to the floor with a loud thud.
'Maybe I'm dying, just like Drew said. This is it, I won't be able to see my parents... they'll wonder why I'm not home. No one will know where I am! They'll unfreeze and suddenly two students are gone into thin air!'
Drew slowly opened the door, creeping over to Bailey. "Um... are you okay? I heard a loud crash and I wanted to see if you were alright." Bailey jumped back in shock, causing another wave of pain through his body. "I-I think I'm dying, it h-hurts. What's h-happening..." Bailey's eyes were filled to the brim with tears, screaming to be let out. Drew, on the other hand, had a knowing look on his face.
"Well, you see, this sort of thing happens to Time Travelers. Everyone in this world has something different, others feel something similar but not quite the same." Bailey blinked his eyes in confusion, "what do y-you mean?" He asked, slowly moving to a more comfortable position.
"You grew up not knowing about your powers, so I can see yours waited out until it thought you were ready. You see, when we are young and ready to start using our powers, our bodies aren't quite adapted to it yet so it causes us pain. Once your body is adapted, the pain will just go away forever I guess. With Time Travelers, however, they can feel the pain when they enter a worm hole over a certain period of time. It's best to stay safe while you're in there. A Time Traveler can stay within the worm hole for a long time, but too long would kill you. If you're traveling with someone who isn't a Time Traveler, there chances of dying are increased. That's why we need all the help we can get."
Bailey let the information sink in. For starters, he was glad he wasn't dying. The bad side, he wanted all this to be over. "Don't worry," Drew reassured, "the pain will be over before you know it!"
Bailey moved his foot, finding the pain had subsided for now. Slowly, he made his way up off the ground. "So... what exactly do you do? I remember you saying shapeshifting? So, is that what your power is?"
Drew giggled, nodding his head excitedly. "Yup! It's pretty awesome! I can do a lot of things. But I like to do it when it's necessary, you know?" Bailey nodded, "what exactly can you change into?"
"Animals, both real and mythical. Insects, arachnids, humans... basically anything you can think of!" Bailey thought on it for a bit, "can you change into me then?" He asked, a sly smirk forming on his face. "Yeah!" Drew exclaimed, shapeshifting into Bailey.
Bailey's mouth hung open in shock. "It looks like I'm looking in a mirror! But without the mirror." Drew gave a small smile, making Bailey cringe a little. "Eh, I shouldn't be allowed to smile. I look like a toe."
An awkward silence fell between the two. During this time, Drew shifted back to his real self, "have you, um, been in the worm hole?" He asked, trying to break the silence. "The commander wanted me to, but I backed out from fear. I'm pretty sure he thinks I'm a loser..."
Drew's face lit up, pointing at Bailey with a sneaky grin. "How about you go in now! Just don't go too deep, because of the monster. You know how to get out, right?" Bailey nodded, grabbing the end of his shirt nervously. "But, I don't know... is it safe?"
Drew hummed, "if you travel for too long it could become dangerous. The fastest way to solve that is to enter a random portal, and stay in that time to warm up after almost being frozen to death. Then you can go back in and quickly create a portal back home."
In reality, this was a lot of work for just traveling through time. If he did go in, there's a possibility of running into the monster, getting stuck, dying...
"Are you gonna do it?" Drew asked, worry showing on his face. "If I don't come out in ten minutes, go get help. Even longer, I might as well be dead."
Drew placed his hands on Bailey's shoulders. "You don't really have to do it. It's safer being a loser in some guys eyes, then dead in a worm hole with an acid spitting monster."
Determination filled Bailey's eyes, "I'm gonna go in, I'll be out quick! Just you wait!"
Turning, Bailey held out his hand, placing a portal just in front of him. Both he and Drew could see a mass of clouds circling like the inside of a storm. Inside the clouds were many portals leading to different zones such as the past, present, and future. "Wish me luck!" Bailey said, taking a fearful breath in.
Carefully, Bailey entered the portal, being whisked away almost immediately. The Commander had said new comers have little to no control once inside the worm hole the first time. The energy around you did, and only if you get stronger can you control where you go.
Bailey felt breathless trying to desperately see where he was going. It was only then did he notice something just up ahead. It was the very thing he had longed not to see...
