Twenty-Five
"Where the bloody hell did they go?!" Jax scanned the execution room wildly in confusion.
The only thing that revealed that the Ultimate Gamer had ever been there were the bloodstains on the tree stump that they had previously been tied to. And Monokumace themself lay severed cleanly in half a distance away.
"Well, I can confirm for a fact that the other two are dead." Dawn winced as she looked away from the glass panel, behind which Evan was slumped in his chair in front of the machine that had delivered more than enough unwelcome substances into his system.
"You sure? I mean, Evan's definitely dead, but what about Alister?" Tommie gestured to the boxing ring where the Ultimate Fashionista lay limp.
Dawn approached and squinted for a moment before saying, "No, he's dead. His neck is broken quite badly."
"So the other two are dead, yeah, but the f*ckin' mastermind vanished!" Jax gestured overexaggeratedly at the fallen tree once more. "Dude got bloody cut in half!"
"You say bloody a lot, is it a killing game thing or are you secretly British?" Tommie asked.
"Nah, just the first one. I'm Canadian."
"No f*cking way you're Canadian with a dirty mouth like that."
"Sorry," he shrugged.
Dawn actually stifled a laugh.
"So what now? Is that just... it?" Tommie frowned, twirling a strand of blonde hair with her finger. "We just... walk away?"
"I guess?" Jax agreed.
Jackie suddenly barked, trotting over to the bloodied tree stump on the forest-esque set of the execution room. When she turned around, there was something metal gleaming in her mouth.
"What's this?" Jax bent down to collect it from her. "Good girl."
He wiped the slobber off of the object on his sleeve before showing it to Dawn and Tommie. It was some sort of small device with a button.
"Any idea what that does?" Tommie asked.
Jackie barked again, running out of the room and down the hallway towards the elevator.
"I guess she knows?" Jax laughed before chasing after her.
The three ran down the hallway, back into the courtroom, and filed into the elevator. Once back up on the first floor of the school, Jackie took off again, leaving them no choice but to follow.
"Does your dog have, like, super intelligence, or is she leading us on a wild goose chase?" Tommie asked through gasps for air. "Also, how are you not tired yet?"
Jax grinned at her. "I'm around dogs all day, every day. You build up stamina through playing with them, walking them, and yelling a lot."
Maybe the title of Ultimate Dog Trainer was more complex than Dawn had expected. She decided that she would just ask him later.
"Well, wherever we're going, I hope it's-" Tommie cut herself off as they finally skidded to a stop, and her eyes widened. "Oh."
Towering before them was the massive iron door, reminiscent of a safe door. Dawn recalled it from the first day. Or at least what she'd thought had been the first day, because the first day had apparently been two years ago. It was all still so strange.
"Well, you guys ready?" Jax looked over his shoulder at each of his companions.
Tommie nodded, determination evident in her eyes. "Whatever happens next, we're doing it together."
"I'm sure that so long as we hold onto that hope that has brought us here, we can face whatever lies ahead," Dawn agreed.
She held her breath as Jax finally held up the device. She watched as he hesitated for what felt like a long, long time- maybe even another two years? Ha, that would be funny- before he, at long last, pressed the button.
And then the door opened.
