Sixteen
Elena bit into the peanut butter sandwich sitting near Natasha.
"Where are you?" Natasha asked the hologram, well technically it was Rhodey. Elena would never get a handle on Tony's technology.
"Mexico." Rhodey stated, "The Federales found a room full of bodies...looks like a bunch of cartel guys never even had a chance to get their guns off."
"It's probably a rival gang," Natasha dismissed, "Except it isn't. It's definitely Barton." Rhodey stated, and Natasha's eyes fell.
Elena looked at Rhodey for him to continue, "What he's done here...what he's been doing these last few years....I mean the scene that he left, I gotta tell you there's a part of me that doesn't want to find him."
Tears built in Natasha's eyes, "Will you find out where he's going next?" She asked and then reached down to her own peanut butter sandwich, taking a bite.
"Nat?" Rhodey asked, "Please?" Natasha looked at the man pleadingly, "I could help," Elena offered, "No one says I can't take a few days off from my first graders."
"Okay, that'd be good, I'll keep in touch." Rhodey spoke before dropping off the call.
"Nat?" Elena looked at her older sister, "You can talk to me. I want to help."
"I know," Natasha sighed, leaning back in her chair.
"It's been a rough week." Natasha stated, "Nat..." Elena started and the red head shook her head.
"You know I'd offer to cook you dinner but, you seem pretty miserable already." Steve quipped from the doorway.
"You here to do your laundry?" Natasha asked, "Maybe he's here to challenge me to another race." Elena stated.
"I'm here to see a friend, and I also hear that congratulations are in order," he looked towards Elena.
"Yup, I'm getting married." Elena smiled.
"Clearly you friend is fine." Natasha stated, "You know, I saw a pod of whales when I was coming over the bridge." Steve spoke.
"In the Hudson?" Natasha asked, "Woah." Elena murmured.
"There's fewer ships..." Steve trailed off, "cleaner water."
"You know, if you're about to tell me to look on the bright side." Natasha crossed her arms, "Umm, I'm about to hit you in the head with a peanut butter sandwich."
"As you should." Elena stated.
"Sorry," he walked further into the room, setting down his jacket, "Force of habit."
"Don't even- you love your big hero speeches." Elena stated.
Steve settled down into a chair across from the sisters. "You know I keep telling everybody, they should move on and grow. Some do."
"But not us."
"I may not have moved on, I don't think I could ever move on from losing a sister...but I sure as hell did grow. We all did, in at least one way." Elena started, "I mean Steve, you were able to fix things with Tony of all people. And Nat, you practically run the Avengers, and you teach adorable little girls how to dance. I think we can call that growth."
"Maybe so." Steve stated, "No one does this if I move on." Natasha spoke sadly, "Maybe it doesn't need to be done." Steve shrugged.
Natasha shook her head, "I used to have nothing. And then I got this. This job...this family. And I was better because of it."
Elena frowned, and Natasha continued, "And even though they're gone...I'm still trying to be better."
"I think we both need to take a page out of Ellie's book and get a life." Steve stated.
"I had a life." Natasha spoke, "I had Maria, and the team, and you and Yelena," the red head turned to Elena for the last part.
"But you know, you first." She said to Steve., "Seriously though, when was the last time you went on a date?" Elena asked.
Steve looked at Elena, "I was actually wondering if I was allowed a plus one to your wedding."
"Oh my god, Natasha! Steve is totally in love! Look at him!" Elena laughed, "Good for you, my friend, Good for you."
"So what's her name? Where'd you meet her?" Elena asked with a smile, "Maya," he smiled softly, "I met her at one of the therapy groups although I'm still not entirely convinced she was there for therapy."
"What else would she be there for? To pick up guys? With mental health issues." Elena questioned, and the blonde man shrugged.
A chime filled up the space and Natasha swipped her hand, "Uh, hi is anyone home? This is uh, Scott Lang. We met a few years ago at the airport...in Germany. I was the guy that got really big. I had a mask on. You wouldn't recognize me."
"Is this an old message?" Steve asked, "It's the front gate." Natasha stated.
"I really need to talk to you guys." Scott stated.
"Scott? Are you ok?" Steve asked, "Yeah. Have any of you ever studied Quantum Physics?"
"Just a bit, I usually jump around a lot in what I'm interested in, so I have small amount of information about just about anything." Elena stated.
"Only to make conversation." Natasha noted, sarcastically.
"All right, so..." Scott started, "Five years ago right before...Thanos, I was in a place called the quantum realm. The quantum realm is like it's own microscopic universe. To get in there you have to be incredibly small."
"Hope, she's my um...she was my...she was supposed to pull me out. And then Thanos happened and I got stuck in there." Scott explained .
"I'm sorry that must've been a very long five years." Natasha noted, "Yeah, but that's just it. It wasn't."
"What do you mean?" Elena asked, "For me it was five hours." He explained, "See the rules for the quantum realm aren't aren't like they are up here. Everything is unpredictable. Is that anybody's sandwich? I'm starving."
"Scott." Steve started as Scott picked up the sandwich, "What are you talking about?"
"So...what I'm saying is...time works differently in the quantum realm." He said
"So you've said." Elena muttered, "The only problem is right now, we don't have a way to navigate it, but what if we did?"
"What exactly are you suggesting?" Elena arched an eyebrow at the man.
"I can't stop thinking about it." Scott continued and Natasha, Steve, and Elena shared a look.
"What if we could somehow control the chaos and we could navigate it." He paced, "What if there was a way...that we could enter the quantum realm at a certain point in time, but then exit the quantum realm at another point in time?"
"Like..like before Thanos."
"Like time travel?" Elena asked, "Awesome."
"So, a time traveling machine?" Steve asked, "No, no, not a machine. This is more like a..." he motioned his hand around, "Okay, yeah like a Time Machine."
"I know it's, crazy. It's crazy. But I can't stop thinking about it." Scott spoke, "It might be crazy, but isn't crazy worth a shot? Sometimes crazy is just what we need." Elena stated.
"It's crazy, but there might be some way." Scott rambled, "Scott. I get emails from a raccoon...so nothing sounds crazy anymore." Natasha noted.
"And I am getting married. Oh my god I am getting married." Elena quipped.
"So who do we talk to about this?"Scott asked, "I actually know just who to talk to about this, unfortunately we're going to have to pay him a little visit."
