Sherlock And Watson

"Brecken honey, why don't you sit beside Kieran? He should be here soon."

I inwardly cringe at mum calling Brecken honey. It was very cringey. Even Molly cringed and she's four.

I am currently seated in between Molly and Brecken's younger brother Tyler who I hadn't noticed in my shock of Brecken Davis being in my hallway.
Tyler was fifteen like me, however was in the year below since he only turned it last month and I'll be sixteen soon.
He seems nice. Looks nothing like Brecken. Blonde hair, blue eyes. Cute if your into that sort of thing. Polite too. Yep, Brecken could defiantly do with taking a few notes from his younger sibling.

Just as mum said it, the door banged open and Kieran walked in.
Completely drunk off his ass.
Mums hand jerks upon seeing her son, causing the squash she had been pouring into Brecken's class to go onto Brecken instead.

I bite my lip to keep back a laugh as he jumps up in surprise and looks down at himself in shock, his cheeks beginning to flame red.

"Oh Brecken, I'm so sorry!" Mum yells, quickly grabbing a napkin off of the table. Before she could begin wiping him down, making the situation ten times worse, I quickly stand and grab Brecken's arm.
"Come on, you can borrow one of Kieran's shirts." I say, dragging him out of the room.

"How dare you!" I hear mum hiss as I lead Brecken up the stairs. I gently hum to myself, playing with the ends of my hair.

Suddenly, I feel a hand grab my own and swing me so that my back is up against the wall.
"What the f-"
Brecken puts a finger to my lips, silencing me. "Now that I have you alone," he says with a smirk causing me to glare. "I wanted to speak to you about the other night."

I just stare at him. We were close, like really close. I could smell the mint of his breath fanning against my face and see the freckles dotted on the bridge of his nose. I could even smell his cologne, something salty reminding me of the beach.

"Well?" He says, searching my face.
I roll my eyes, bringing up my hand to indicate his finger on my lips.
"Oh, right." He says and pulls back.
Now free, I blow away a piece of hair that had fallen in my face. I feel Brecken tense up against me as I did and I give him a strange look.

"What?" He says.
"Care to get off me?"
"Not really."
"Then we don't talk."

Brecken sighs. You drive a hard bargain, Tegan."
My eyes widen. "Did you just call me Tegan?"
Brecken shrugs. Yeah, so?"
I smile. "Nothing."

Brecken squints his eyes at me. "You seem to be in a good mood."
I laugh. "Well of course I am! I just witnessed the beginning of my older brother getting his ass kicked and you getting embarrassed. This is the start of a good day."

Brecken gives me a strange look. "You're weird."
"You're a jerk."
"Wait to point out the obvious."
"Touché."

Brecken shakes his head and releases me. I feel cold all of the sudden. I shake my head, brushing it off and let myself into Kieran's room.

Saying it was a mess was really an understatement. Imagine a teenage boys room that hasn't been cleaned in probably about a month and smells like it hasn't been in two. Horrible image, right?

Brecken moves to step in but I quickly turn and shut the door in his face, cupping a hand over my nose as I do so.

"Hey! What was that for?" He yells angrily on the other side of the door.
I roll my eyes. "I'm doing you a favour!" I yell back.

I hear Brecken sigh. "Tegan, have you forgotten that I'm a seventeen year old boy? I'm sure I can handle it."
"Suit yourself." I mumble and turn as he opens the door. Almost immediately I hear it slam back closed.
"Jesus!" Brecken yelps from the hallway. "Who the hell did your brother kill in there?"

I laugh, forgetting for a moment the horrible stench. "I did warn you."
"Well, hurry up. This shirt is beginning to get sticky."
My mind instantly goes to an image of Brecken's shirt sticking to his muscular chest. I shake my head, ashamed of myself.

"Thinking of my body?" I hear Brecken mock.
I snort. "As if."
Oh god, he couldn't hear my thoughts could he? That would be scary as heck, but also pretty cool...

I walk to the back of the room where Kieran's wardrobe has been left wide open, discarded clothing spilling out.
"Pick a colour!"
"What?"
"A colour, idiot. Pick a colour." I say, unable to stop smiling. Thank the man who created the door.

"Oh, uh, black." Brecken replies.
I pull out a black shirt and move back to the door. When I open it, Brecken is stood with his hand covering his nose.

Wise man.

"Here," I say handing him the shirt. "This should fit."

"Is it clean?" Brecken asks, holding it up as if it's a snotty tissue.
I roll my eyes. "If clean means not diseased, then...sure."

Brecken laughs. I paused at the sound. Was Brecken laughing? Laughing with me and not at me? Good god this was the beginning of a great day. Screw good.

"Um, why are you staring at me?" Brecken asks uneasily, waving a hand in front of my face.
I blink then begin to smile like the joker. "No reason."

"Ice cream! Ice cream!" Molly, Brecken and Kieran all chanted in unison at mum and Jessica who begin laughing.

We are all currently seated around the dinner table, almost two hours after the squash incident. The lunch actually wasn't as bad as I thought it would be, at least after Kieran sobered up. He was still a little drunk and actually fell asleep through desert. Molly and I decided to put on one of her princess tiaras on him and a feathered scarf, then took a photo for Facebook.

I'm really immature.

Jessica turned out to be a really nice person. Brecken must get the annoying gene from his father who moved back to his birth place in Madrid after he and Jessica split up when living in Liverpool. Jessica, Brecken and Tyler all moved to London in the hopes of a fresh start. It felt weird knowing Brecken's story, but even weirder when he began asking me about mine.

Questions like 'is it hard having a dad in the army?' Yes. Or 'have you ever considered going into the army yourself?' No.
It was all just very strange, but at the same time...nice? I don't know. I think the new batch of orange squash is getting to my head.

I also learnt that mum and Jessica began working together and that's how they knew each other, and why it was Brecken who dropped off mum's purse that night.

Oh, and do you remember how Molly was all shy around Brecken that night?
Well not anymore! Nope, the little booger is sucking up to him like some lost puppy.
I watch as Brecken teaches her how to throw stuff across the room with her spoon. Right at my face. How lovely.

I almost beat him with that spoon when Molly managed to hit my face with her half eaten asparagus. Then almost killed him with it when he ate the asparagus after it hit me.

Jerk face.

I now watch as my eighteen year old brother and seventeen year old Brecken scream for ice cream louder than my four year old sister.

Why is my life so weird?

Once the mums disappear, Kieran burries his head into his arms.
"Why is it so bright in here?" Kieran groans.
"It's called day light." I say dryly.
Kieran shrugs, not raising his head. "Well, it's bright."
"No shit Sherlock." I deadpan.

"Tegan!" Brecken gasps in a girly voice, causing Molly to giggle and fall off of her chair.
I glare at him. "Great, now my little sisters on the floor." I look down at where Molly has begun playing with something on the carpet. "Traitor." I hiss making her squeal and hide under the table. "You share my DNA, not his."

"What's DNA?" Molly asks, all that is visible are her bright blue eyes.
I sigh. "Do not ask."
"Ohhhh." She says as if it all makes sense now.
"I see what you did there!" Tyler yells happily.

Now it's Brecken whose sighing. "Well, we can't have a Sherlock without a Watson I guess."
I begin to laugh and Brecken raises a dark eyebrow. I can't help it. It was funny.

Tyler mutters profanities under his breath and scowls down at the table.
"Don't scowl, it makes you look constipated." Brecken and I say in unison.

Our eyes meet and I know my cheeks are flaming red. Brecken opens his mouth to say something but is cut off by mum and Jessica returning with bowls and tubs of ice cream in hand.

"So what does everyone want?" Mum asks, waving her spoon in the air. When she notices the awkward tension in the room she frowns. "Did we miss something?"
I continue staring down at my empty plate. Was there an actual chance that Brecken and I were becoming friends?
