It was you

"I don't want to talk about it, Megan." I say for the hundredth time. "Would you just leave it?"

Megan purses her lips, but sits back in her chair nonetheless. It was science and instead of focusing on Miss Moss talking about displacement reactions, I am thinking about Brecken and his new 'girlfriend'.

It was all the school could talk about. Like seriously, don't they have lives? Apparently not as all I've heard through out the day is 'Don't you think she's a bit young?' or 'Don't they look so cute together?' or 'She's so lucky."

She was lucky. Whoever she was. So damn lucky.

"Tegan..."
"Megan," I say impatiently. "I'm fine."
"You don't look fine."
"Then stop looking."

Megan huffs, chewing the end of her pen before writing down the answer to the equation.
I stare down at my hands, unable to stop thinking about him.

"Tegan, do you know the answer?" Miss Moss says, clearly noticing I wasn't paying attention.
Silently cursing to myself I look up at the board. "Uh...copper sulfate plus magnesium equals magnesium sulfate plus copper?"

"Correct, and why is this?" Miss Moss presses.

"Because magnesium is higher up on the reactivity series than copper?"
"Very good, I would advise you pay more attention next time otherwise you might not be as lucky."
"Sorry miss." I mumble.

The lesson dragged on and on and on...until the classroom door opened and in walked Oliver Chase. He was dressed in a smart looking button down white shirt with chinos and vans. His curly blonde hair was as unruly as ever and his chocolate brown eyes were warm and welcoming. I remember the last time, well first time, I talked to him was in the sports hall that time.

What's he doing here?

"Ah, Oliver thank you for joining us." Miss Moss says with a warm smile. "We were just discussing displacement reactions."

Oliver gives her an award winning smile. "Sounds great Miss."

"Okay year eleven, you all have a sheet on your table of the experiment I want you to do. Work with the person sat next to you."
I turn by head to the empty chair beside me and sigh. Tommy's got the flue again...

"Hey, Tegan right?" Oliver says coming over and leaning his arms over my table.
I give him and polite smile and nod, turning back to my book to scribble down the date quick.

"Any good at science?" He asks, taking the empty seat beside me.
I shrug. "Depends what we're doing."
Oliver stretches out like a cat. "Chemistry's always been my best, it's why I took it as and a-level."

"You're helping out then?" I ask conversationally, chewing the end of my pen. Nasty habit.

Oliver nods, then noticing my lack of partner says, "Need any help?"
I look down at the sheet of paper. Easy stuff. I look over to see Megan working with Alex Kite, aka her crush since year seven. I give Oliver another smile. "Sure."

"He's terrible. I was the one telling him the answers. The entire time he was gawking at Jessica Smart's butt. Whoever let him take it as a-level, let alone help out a class, was on drugs."

Currently my friends and I are in the canteen, sat around a circular table talking about my experience with Oliver Chase as my science partner.

Never again.

What I said was true, however that didn't mean I didn't have fun. Oliver turned out to be a cool guy to talk to, you know when he was focusing on something other than butts.

"I had to work with James." Amber said with a shudder. "He actually picked his nose and ate it!"
Taylor made a gagging noise and Laurie smacked him for being so loud and gross.

"So, anyone found out who Brecken Davis's new honey is?" Taylor says.
I raise my eyebrows. "Honey?"
"You know, the woman in his life?" Taylor explained.
Laurie shook her head. "Why do you have to be so weird?"
Taylor glared, throwing one of Megan's chips at her face.

No one answered the question, which was good for me since I'd probably start crying. Sad, right?
I shake my head, inwardly scolding myself. It was you who didn't want a relationship, it was you who said you didn't love him.

Raising my head, I begin to eat my lunch. I will not let Brecken Davis get to me. I will not.
That thought dies the moment the whole canteen goes silent. I turn in my chair to see Brecken in the doorway, a girl in his arms, kissing her like his life depended on it.

What made it worse was I knew her.
In fact I hated her.
