Chapter 5

"Nice to see you here so early."

"Nice to see that you've come late."

"Ooh touché. Point for you Lisbon but I have a surprise for you."

"Oh dear God."

Ruth hasn't entered the office so it's just the two of them. Lisbon is on the couch and Jane is standing across from her. With a triumphant smile he hands her a Starbucks cup of coffee...with no coffee.

"Um...thanks?"

"You have to open it Lisbon!"

He whines but brightens up when she takes off the lid and discovers her cell phone and a Starbucks gift card in it.

Lisbon is genuinely surprised.

"I decided that yelling at each other over the phone wasn't going to fix anything so...do you want to get coffee with me?"

She raises an eyebrow.

"Don't deny the thought of having coffee with me being very appealing."

Lisbon smirks.

"Oh so it's a date."

"N-no it's not a date."

She lets out a sigh.

"I don't know Jane getting all open with a mentalist doesn't sound 'appealing'."

"Please Lisbon let me make it up to you."

"Well-"

He gets her hands and has her stand up.

"I knew you'd say yes!"

They pass Ruth, who looks a little surprised.

"Oh I-I guess I'll see you later then!"

"Jane!"

"Shhh trust me Lisbon getting you out of here is good for you."

As promised he did take her to Starbucks and soon after took her to the park.

"Wow this IS a date."

"There you go again with the date thing."

"Well Jane you whisked me away, you gave me coffee, and now you've brought me to the park."

He turns to face her.

"So then what would happen next? If we were on a date?"

"What you'd want to happen. You're the man, take the lead."

He furrows his eyebrows as he tries to get a read on this new side of her. He shakes his head.

"What are you getting at?"

"Let me ask you something, is this a con?"

"Excuse me!?"

"The coffee. The park. It's a valid question."

"Now wait just a minute. You were saying this was a date just a moment ago and now you're saying its a con?"

She smiles and steps closer, now they're just a few inches apart.

"Played you pretty good didn't I mentalist?"

"Y-your a minx!"

He pushes her away from him looking a bit hurt.

"Hurts doesn't it? To feel torn up inside and confused if this person you like even likes you back or if its just a trick.
-she's gets up close to him again before he can get away- You do this to me all the time Patrick Jane. So what makes this one so different?"

"Everything! How can I prove to you that this is genuine when you're so convinced everything I'm doing is a lie!?"

"Kiss me. I want you to kiss me and it needs to be genuine."
