"What's going on under that table?"
My heartbeat runs wild. It's like it's moving hundred beats per second.
Samuel slowly retracts his hand from my laps.
"Stand up, you." The math teacher says looking directly at me.
"Are you deaf or something?" He yells and I jump in my seat.
I'm about to stand when I hear a chair scraping the floor behind me.
"So you have the guts to use phone in my class? Come out here, I'll teach you a lesson." The Math teacher surprises me by saying.
I turn to see a guilty looking girl standing behind me.
"Calm down. He wasn't talking to you." Sam murmurs from beside me.
I let out a huge sigh of relief before growing jittery. Did I imagine what happened or did it actually happen?
As if trying to answer my question, Sam places his hand in it's former position.
Oh Jesus.
I purse my lips together before staring straight ahead at the white board.
"I wasn't using a phone." The girl says from behind me.
I turn on my sit to face her completely while at the same time trying to get rid of Samuel's hand.
He turns as well, in the process coming closer to me.
"Come out from there. You still have the mind to lie to me, isn't it?" The math teacher asks looking enraged, as he walked in our direction.
Sam thankfully withdraws his hand from my laps.
The whole class seems to still as we watch the drama that is about to unfold. It's obvious the girl is lying. Besides, I've seen her a couple of times using her phone in the class.
Ivory Gates doesn't allow phones in school but some people bring theirs anyway.
The math teacher drags her out of where she stood and the impact of the pull pushes her locker, causing the phone to fall from where she had hidden it.
The teacher bends and picks the phone up. "What's this?"
The girl puts on a straight face which somehow aggravates the man even more.
"Get on your knees." He says quietly.
The girl for some reason persists and refuses to get on her knees.
"Did you hear me?"
"Sir, I have an injury on my knee."
My classmates snicker and I catch a smirk form on the girl's face. I resist the urge to facepalm. She's obviously trying to put up a show.
So that we'll say she's savage. Ode.
"Are you...get on your knees my friend." His order is accompanied with a loud slap at her back; something we the Nigerians like to call abara.
Her back instinctively arches and as we could all tell, the abara was hot. She starts to scratch her back, leaving tears to flow freely from her eyes.
Well, she sure didn't see that one coming.
You would think Mr maths is satisfied but instead he continues to slap her back until she gets on both her knees.
"You're not getting this phone until your valedictory service. Nonsense!"
The class that had formerly been a little noisy is now grave yard silent while the maths teacher carries on with his teaching. Even Sam doesn't seem to have it in him to continue his rubbish.
Remind me never to looks for this man's trouble.

The next three or four periods went by and I had somehow avoided conversations with Samuel.
It is now Government period; the last subject we're having today. Phew.
"Good morning, class."
"Good morning, Mr Ahmed." We chorus back.
"Bring out your exercise books. We have a lot of notes to copy today." He says and we groan.
I hate school.
I place my school bag on my laps to search for my note when I feel someone tap me from behind.
"What?" I ask after turning around.
It's the girl that the Math teacher gave abara. I smile at the thought.
She replies me by pointing her thumb out. I look in the direction she's pointing at to see Philips looking at me.
"My note." He says loud enough for me to hear. I'm confused as to what he's talking about. Which note did he giv- oh shit.
I bite my lower lip in realization.
The day he gave me his note, I curiously searched through it and was shocked at his amazing calligraphy.
I was expecting it to be ugly like Sam's but it wasn't. That night, I went through every single page and ended up leaving it on my lamp stand.
I forgot to put it in my bag.
I gulp, not knowing how to explain my carelessness to him.
I look back at the board to see Mr Ahmed had already gone far with the notes. He is really fast.
I turn to see Philips looking at me expectantly.
Since I can't shout across the room to Philips, I write a note to him telling him I forgot his note and promising to help him copy today's notes.
I throw the paper to him and he catches it with ease. When he's done reading, a look of irritation crosses his face before he discards the paper on the floor.
I sigh before I start copying my own note. I can't believe I'm going to have to copy this long note two times.
"Amy." Sam calls quietly.
I freeze on my sit and then decide to just pretend like I didn't hear him.
"Amy." He calls again.
I continue to copy my note.
"Amy." He snatches my pen this time.
"What? What? What?"
I look at him for the first time since math period.
"Can we talk...after government class? Like when school closes." He asks.
If I didn't know better, I would think he's nervous.
"Uh sure. About?"
"When school closes I'd tell you." He drops my pen and continues to copy down his note.
My mind races with thoughts. What does he want to tell me?

"So Sam pressed you?" Joy asks and I facepalm again.
"He didn't ah. Stop talking rubbish."
"But you said-"
"Shhhh." I cover her mouth with my palm preventing her from saying any further.
"You're too loud."
"Sorry ma. But you said he was you know." She dramatizes by massaging her laps.
"Ehn is that one pressing?"
"Eniola please what's that? Did he not press her?" Joy asks Enny.
"He didn't actually. Pressing is if he touches her a*s or breasts." Enny replies and I give Joy the 'you see' look.
"Okay whatever. Sha when are you going to meet him?"
"I'm not going anywhere jare."
Joy looks at me like I just made an insane statement.
"Are you okay?" Enny asks.
"I don't think she is."
"What if he wants to ask you to be his girlfriend?" Joy asks.
"Exactly. That's why I'm not going."
Of course, that's the first thing that came to my mind when he said he wanted to 'talk' and for that reason, I'm not going.
"Erm, Amaka please let's not be unfortunate. Oya just go and check what he wants."
"No."
"Go now."
"I'm not going anywhere."
"Amaka."
"I said I'm not going anywhere."
-
"Hey Sam, what's up? What did you want to talk about?"
He looks around the empty library before advancing towards me.
"Nothing actually. I just wanted to talk." He says, but I can tell he's lying based on the fact that he has a huge smirk plastered on his face.
"You just wanted to talk?" I ask sarcastically.
"Yeah? I just wanted to talk," he holds my hands in his, "to my seat partner. Is that a bad thing?" He asks.
"Nope."
There's a lot of silence filled with me just staring at the library books as a form of distraction.
The librarian is out to God knows where and the senior block is almost completely empty.
"I like you." Sam mumbles under his breath. If not for the eerily silent environment, I wouldn't have caught it but I did.
"Ehn? What'd you say?" I ask in pretence.
He withdraws his palm from mine before taking my fingers and playing around with it.
"I said...I like you." He says loudly this time.
My throat all of a sudden runs dry as my heart does a few flips.
"Oh."
"Oh? That's it?" He asks with a chuckle.
"Err...no-i- sorry excuse me." I stutter before grabbing my bag and making for the exit.
"Well at least he didn't ask you to be his girlfriend." My subconscious says.
True that.
"I said...I like you." I recall what Sam had just told me and I begin to feel giddy.
Sam likes me.
I'm sporting a small smile on my face as I make my way down the stairs.
Sam likes- ouch.
I steady myself on the stairs as I have just bumped into someone.
"You're not blind o." The person hisses in irritation.
"Sorry." I mumble, picking up my bag that managed to fall.
"It's even you." I look up to Philips' familiar voice.
Oh it's even him.
