0.3 | Awkward Interrogation

❀Sapphire's P.O.V❀

I stare at the teacher writing down an equation on the board, with my cheek rested against my palm. He instructs for us to write down the equation, then for us to solve it.

With a sigh, I look down at my open notebook and do as told, writing down the equation before solving it.

Once I finish, I put my pencil down and lay my head on my arms while they lay on my desk.

I feel a finger poke my shoulder and I look up to my right. "What?" I ask Ian in a whisper.

"Can I copy? I don't get it." He tells me sheepishly and I lay my head back down.

"Ask the teacher for help."

He groans. "Come on."

"Ian, are you finished already?" The teacher asks aloud and I chuckle to myself.

"No, sir. Not yet." He answers, pretending to write down the answer. Instead, he's tracing over the same writing he's already done.

"Then I don't understand why you're talking, young man."

Ian scoffs at that and I snort, catching the attention of the girl in front of me. "Oh, hey." I wave at her and she raises an eyebrow at me before she turns back around.

I lay my left cheek on my arms, fixing my attention on Ian, and laugh softly to myself when his eyebrows crease in deep thought as he stares at his paper.

"Here," I tell him, handing him my notebook. "But don't make it obvious."

His head turns in my direction and a bright smile spreads across his face when he sees what I'm offering him, quickly taking it and checking if the teacher saw him before copying down the answer.

"Thank you." He says once he hands it back.

"No problem."

"Alright class," the teacher speaks up again and we all turn to pay attention to what he has to say. "Once you're done with that, turn to page 367 in your textbooks and work on numbers 1-35. Odd numbers only."

I quickly do as told and flip through the pages, until finally landing on page 367.

"It's due at the end of class. Get to work." He finishes, and the entire class groans out loud. "Grr, indeed." The teacher mocks, going back to his laptop.

I laugh softly to myself as he does so, taking out a sheet of paper and working on the assignment.

"Can I copy when you're done?" Ian asks from beside me and I turn to raise an eyebrow at him.

"You won't have enough time, at least try."

He huffs. "Fine."

Well that was easy. I think to myself and smile as I focus my attention back on my paper.

* * *

"So..?" Amber questions from across the table and I look up at her.

"So...what?"

She pushes her tray next to me, and I scrunch up my eyebrows in confusion when she stands up from her seat. She walks around the table and I give her a slight smile when she sits next to me.

"So what did you guys talk about?" She asks and I roll my eyes, as I laugh.

"We just went over the rules, that's all."

"Well, that's a bummer." She comments. "I was totally expecting something exciting."

"Like what?" I ask, moving my food around on my tray.

"I don't know..." she trails off, thinking of her response. "Like, maybe about the rumor going around?"

I raise a confused brow, "What rumor?"

"You don't know?"

I simply shake my head at her.

"Oh," she mutters, before she wraps her arm around me and cups my ear, putting her mouth next to my ear to whisper. "People are saying that Ivan and Julissa are a thing behind Ian's back."

I pull back to stare at her in shock, "So, it's true?"

"Oh, so you have heard...but nobody knows, the person who started the rumor isn't exactly reliable."

"I see."

"Yup, the truth eventually comes out so I guess we'll find out sooner or later."

I look over towards the jock and cheerleader table to see Ian hugging Julissa to his side, planting a kiss to her temple.

"I really hope it isn't true." I mutter. "Ian doesn't deserve that."

* * *

"The address?" I question, pressing the phone to my ear as I rummage through the fridge, closing it again as I don't find anything appetizing.

"I'm leaving tonight, sweetheart. You didn't think I was just going to trust a stranger, now did you?" He asks with a chuckle and I force out a laugh as well. "I need to meet him, see his ID, ask about his intentions and if I don't like his responses, I'm taking you with me. I don't care if you already payed."

I hop up onto a stool, resting my elbows on the counter. "I haven't signed the contract for that same reason. Dad, why can't you just trust me?"

He stays silent for a few moments, before he lets out a sigh. "Baby girl, I do trust you, but I don't trust random men to be living with my only daughter."

"It's a guy from school and he has a girlfriend, so you really don't have to worry." I try to convince him not to come.

"Address, sweetheart." His insists.

I sigh, "Fine, I'll send it to you through text."

"Alright, I'll see you in a few. I love you, sweetheart."

"I love you too, dad." I tell him as I smile, even though he can't see me.

The line goes dead and I turn off my phone as I hop off the stool before walking over to my room, tossing my phone onto the bed.

"Fire, I'm home!" Ian announces as he walks in through the door and I walk back out of my room, my eyes widening when I see that he has no shirt on.

"How can you walk around so comfortably like that?" I ask, covering my eyes.

I hear him laugh. "I just took it off right now, as I stepped through the door. This is my home, can't I be comfortable in here?"

"I guess."

I shield him from my vision as I walk into the living room and he walks off towards his room, muttering, "Such a virgin."

"Just because I respect the fact that you're in a relationship doesn't mean I'm a virgin."

"Oops, you weren't supposed to hear that!" He calls out and I roll my eyes.

I plop down on the couch and watch tv as I wait for my dad to knock on the door.

I should probably tell Ian. I think to myself. He might come out in only his boxers when my dad is here.

I shudder at the thought, feeling my face redden. "Ian, my dad is coming over, just so you know!"

"What?" He calls back, peeking his head out of his room and I open my mouth to repeat myself – but there's a knock at the door.

"That's him." I quickly say, getting to my feet.

"Shit." Ian curses and I stroll over to the door before swinging it open, hearing Ian's bedroom door slam shut.

"Hey, dad." I smile up at him and he returns it.

"Hey, sweetheart."

I move to the side and he enters the apartment, looking around.

"It's a nice place." He comments as I shut the door behind him.

"Would you like anything to drink?" I ask, walking towards the kitchen.

"No, thank you. Is he home?"

I shift my attention over to Ian's door for a second, before looking at my father and giving him a sly smile. "He just got back from practice."

He nods his head, going over to sit on the couch. "I'll wait, then."

I hesitantly follow along and sit on the couch beside him. "So, what's the project about this time?" I ask, an attempt to start up a quick conversation.

"Apparently there's a new law being set up, and we all need to gather up to discuss what it is and it will take a while before we finally decide whether it's a good law or not."

I nod my head in understanding.

"The president will be there, and to be quite honest I'm a little nervous."

I watch as he pulls at his collar, loosening it, and I lean up to kiss his cheek. "You'll do great, dad." I say, giving him an encouraging smile.

He turns to smile at me and I hear the door from Ian's room click shut, causing both my dad and I to turn our heads in his direction.

"I'm sorry, did I interrupt something?" He asks, now wearing a navy t-shirt and some black gym shorts.

"Nothing important." My dad answers as he gets up from his seat, going around the couch to greet Ian with a handshake. "I'm Walter, Sapphire's father."

"Mr. Adams, it's a pleasure to meet you."

"I hope Sapphire told you why I'm here." My father says and I turn to give Ian a sheepish smile when he narrows his eyes at me.

"No, she didn't." He replies, keeping his eyes on me.

"Well, I was going to." I interject as I shift my attention to a frame hung up on the wall.

"Uh-huh."

I turn my gaze back to Ian and grin, skipping my way over to the counter to sit down on a stool. "You two should sit." I tell them and they nod their head before coming towards me.

"Ian," my father begins, instantly catching his attention. "Do you mind showing me your ID?"

"Dad." I warn as I instantly feel my cheeks heat up in embarrassment.

He waves a dismissive hand at me.

Ian digs into his pocket and takes out his wallet, fishing for his ID and handing it over to my dad. "I turned eighteen two months ago, sir."

My dad looks at it for a few seconds before handing it back to him, nodding his head in approval. "Do you have a girlfriend?"

"Dad, stop it." I mutter, shielding my face with my hands.

"Yes, I do." Ian answers.

God, please let the ground swallow me whole.

"Have you cheated on her?"

"Dad!"

Ian rubs the back of his neck, chuckling to himself. "No, sir, I have not and I don't plan to."

"Very well then." My father says. "Why is it that you needed a roommate?"

"My parents decided that they only wanted to pay the first month and I can't pay the rent on my own."

My dad nods his head. "Do you think my daughter is beautiful?"

"What does that have to do with anything?" I question, feeling my entire face burn up.

Ian only laughs. "She has her good looks, I can't deny that."

My eyes widen and I – yet again – feel myself blush.

My dad turns to give me a smile, sending me a quick wink and I narrow my eyes at him.

"Of course she does. You have good taste." He finally speaks up, smirking at Ian. "I must get going," he tells us, getting up from his seat. "but make sure of one thing."

"What's that?" Ian and I ask in unison.

He walks towards the door and opens it, turning slightly to look at us. "I'm not ready to be a grandpa." Then he exits the apartment, letting the door shut behind him.

* * *

"Oh, that's gold." Amber laughs, slapping her knee once she calms down. "He seriously said that?"

"Yes, it was so awkward once he left the apartment." I grumble, taking a sip of my water.

"Did Ian say anything?" She snickers, sipping at her blueberry Icee.

"No, he just stood there in shock then he left to his room without saying anything." I reply. "But then a few hours later, he came out and handed me the contract papers. I read everything and signed it, before giving the packet back to him."

"So, now it's official?"

"Yeah, it's official. I live with Ian Hawthorn; football captain and – according to you – the hottest guy in school."

"Goals." She says, finishing up her Icee before getting up from her seat and throwing away the empty cup. She returns and sits in her seat again. "Trust me, him and his girlfriend won't last much longer."

I lean forward and stare at her expectantly. "What do you mean?"

"Let's just say, cheaters get caught and we both need to be at the football game tonight."

I raise an eyebrow at her, then my eyes widen. "Oh my god!" I shout and Amber slaps her hand over my mouth, shushing me. "Sorry," I mutter as she pulls her hand away. "So, the story is true!?" I whisper-shout.

"Yup, it is more true than Julissa's stuffed bra."

I can't help but laugh. "That's just plain dirty."

"You're telling me, and I was dumped – literally." She huffs, folding her arms over her chest. "What kind of asshole breaks up with his girlfriend then kicks her out of the car, as it's raining?"

"Your ex."

"Correct, that is correct."

"We should start getting ready then, if we want to be at the game before the seats are full and we are left standing up the entire time." I say as I stand up from my seat and Amber does the same.

We both get into her car and we drive to get clothes from my apartment before we head over to her house to get ready for the game.

* * *

"Excuse me, pardon me, excuse me." I keep repeating as I push through the sea of people, grabbing Amber's hand so that we won't lose each other.

"Ow! You prick!" She shouts, and I turn my head to see her cupping her mouth. "He elbowed me!" She removes her hand and checks if she has blood, but she doesn't even have a single drop.

I roll my eyes at her and continue to pull her until we reach an empty space on the bleachers, enough space for Amber and I.

"See?" I turn to Amber. "I told you; if we would've came any later, we would've had to be standing up."

"Yeah, yeah, whatever."

We take our seat and wait until the game begins, cheering when our team jogs out onto the field, followed by the visiting team.

Soon enough, the game begins and Amber and I cheer at the top of our lungs when our team makes the first score.

The cheerleaders – Julissa being one of them – do their usual routine as they move their pom poms around and fall to the floor in a split.

"I wish I was able to do the splits." Amber comments from beside me and I laugh softly to myself, focusing on the game as Ian passes the ball over to Ivan.

"Wooh!" I cheer, standing up and watching our team make, yet another, score.

When the game ends, everyone stands up to leave as the teams jog back into the locker room. I follow along, looking back to see Amber still sitting down, frowning at the field.

I walk back over to her. "Hey, what's wrong?"

She looks up at me, her eyebrows now pushed together in annoyance.

"I literally just came to see action! Where the heck was my action?"

"Was the game not enough action for you?" I ask, amused.

"I don't even like sports!" She huffs, throwing her hands up.

"Then, what exactly were you expecting?"

"What I told you earlier! I wanted a cheater to get exposed!" She says, exasperated. "I guess whoever was gonna expose them bailed out and now my day is ruined."

I laugh, "Stop moping around and take me home."

"Fine."
