Chapter 1; Nova and Grillby

Nova paused her sewing project to gaze out the window beside her. She sat in the bay window of Grillby's to hopefully clear her mind but it was of little use.

Grillby - "That's a lovely blanket you're making there, Twilight. I assume it's for your children?"

Nova - "Yes, Touya refuses to let me help with the nursery back at his home, so I decided to use the time to make them a blanket or two and some clothing."

Grillby - "Do you have any new pictures?"

Nova - "As a matter of fact, I may have brought you some."

Nova reached into her nowhere space and pulled out three simple, but classy dark brown, wooden frames.

The first showed Nova looking tired but unbelievably happy holding the twins with Touya smiling down at them and crying.

The second showed the twins curled up in their crib. Nunito took at his father's side with red hair with white tips, bright blue eyes, and white ears and a white stumpy tail. Rei had red hair, but with baby pink ears and a stumpy tail, she had Nova's golden eyes ringed in silver, though definitely her father's nose and dimples. Nunito looked identical to his daddy with added wolfish traits.

Both their ears were pinned to their heads, and their eyes were wide open with. Rei was a very quiet baby while Nunito was chaos incarnate. Nova believed he'd learn to walk for the sole purpose of chasing people.

The third was a picture of Sans. He looked so...happy. Way happier than he ever did in the Underground. Which brought the question, was his Starlight ever happy in the Underground? A week before he was taken, he was noticeably quieter and more drawn in out of nowhere. A day prior to that he'd been laughing about pranking Undyne, very happy and much extroverted. Then a 180° personality shift.

Nova - "Ever since I escaped Gaster's lab, I kept an eye on Sans and his life. I wanted to make sure he was happy. When he came into his Void Ability and took a shortcut outside your bar, I knew that he would be exponentially safer."

Grillby - "Apologies, I'm not sure I follow. Void...ability?"

Nova - "Oh, he didn't tell you..."

Grillby - "Please, don't keep me in the dark. I want to help Sans however I can."

Nova - Sans's shortcuts. It's not some kind of magic that anymonster could use. He travels through the Void to get to a destination faster. It...it also makes us remember..."

Grillby - "Remember? What do you remember?"

Nova - "Grillby, I don't -"

Grillby - "Nova, please."

Nova - "You're gonna want to sit down."

A bar stool sat in front of the window in seconds.

Nova - "None of what I say will make sense. But please don't interrupt me until I finish."

Grillby - "Understood."

Nova took a shaky breath in.

Nova - "Before Sans was taken to this world, a human fell into the Underground. Their name was Frisk. At first, they spared every monster and released us from Mt. Ebott and that was that. However, they had an ability granted to them by their extraordinary levels of Determination. Save and Reset. They could do whatever they wanted, so long as they saved. And...they did.

Frisk slaughtered every monster in the Underground, so...so many times. I had to watch as they killed everyone. I had to watch them kill....Sans. Over and over and over again. I died. Countless times trying to fend off the beast but, with their LV being 20, I never stood any semblance of a chance. Sans and I...we had to relive the same day for what felt like centuries. I'm not sure if you ever died during the seemingly endless genocide, you were always gone...like you were never in the same place as the human. I like to think you were able to hide and protect civilians someplace safe."

Nova had to put her needle and half finished blanket down because her hands were shaking too hard. Grillby sat on the cushioned seat next to her and gently put his hand on her shoulder.

Grillby - "Why did he never tell me?"

Nova - "He did. In the beginning he always told you first and then Dr. Alphys to try to fix the reset problem, but you both would always forget by the time the next reset happened. He couldn't handle having to see the fear in your flames. Not for yourself, but for him and Papyrus.

Speaking of, Papyrus never remembered the resets. He never came into his Void ability until after coming to this world. At least that's my theory. Sans was smarter than me when it came to magic and biology after all. He'd be able to sat more about it."

Grillby - "Thank you for telling me, Twilight. Has there been any resets after we arrived here?"

Nova - "I'm not sure, I've only come here recently I don't think so? At least nothing after I showed up. But, I think I remember one of the Kirishima women mentioning Sans making necklaces for his closest companions like the Kirishima boy, Asriel, Papyrus, and the blonde human he loved."

Grillby - "That would be Bakugo Katsuki. I never thought my Starlight would find someone that would cherish him so dearly, but I'm so happy he did. Does it make a bad father to say that?"

Nova - "I don't think so. In the Underground, Skeleton Monsters' are functionally immortal. We didn't have a need for food or exercise, hence the majority became scholars; knowledge is forever and always changing and always growing with new things to learn. Romance isn't something most skeleton monsters prioritized.

Sans was different, he may have been a top rate scientist, but he always wanted to fall in love. I never got into the type of sciences Sans and Gaster specialized in, I preferred the monster historical and social sciences. The Underground wasn't the ideal romance spot since everyone was significantly older and younger than him. It probably would've taken centuries before Sans found love from our world.

It really doesn't surprise me that, after a relatively short time in this world, with kids his own age, he found someone who loves him unconditionally. I've only met Bakugo briefly at that bar, but I feel he's a good match for Sans. Passionate, brave, he's a bit too naive yet, but he'll get there. His brash attitude should be good for Sans. To help him be less polite to those who don't deserve it. To recognize those who are backhanded and malicious and deal with them...accordingly. Should be no problem, consider the job Asgore forced on him."

The venom in her tone, the slight growl as Asgore was muttered. Grillby's attention was snatched and not in a good way.

Grillby - "What job. As far as I was aware, he was a part-time worker for my bar."

Nova froze and brought her eyes to meet Grillby's.

Nova - "I assumed Sans told you..."

Grillby - "Nova. What job did Sans have."

Nova - "When Sans was eight, he was recruited to join the Deltarune."

Grillby - "Excuse me? I didn't think the Deltarune was real."

Nova - "Everything I know is from my own personal experience and observation. The Deltarune was the private royal guard, protecting the royal family from the shadows. He was promoted to captain four years after becoming nine, and he retired three years after becoming ten. However, Asgore couldn't let a previous Deltarune captain return to being a regular civilian, no. He made a position for punishing those who's LV was too high. Sans was "promoted" to the Royal Judge. He was the last line of defense before the human killed Asgore."

Grillby jaw tightened and black smoke and small embers started rising from his hair.

Nova - "Now that I think about it, I don't think Sans was allowed to speak of either outside the castle."

Grillby - "No, if it was something that dangerous, it would've been forbidden to speak of outside the castle. Still though, if I ever see Asgore...I will not be able to control my anger."

Nova - "I'm right there with you. In the meantime, would you care to stop by the house to see the twins?"

Grillby smiled warmly and kissed her forehead.

Grillby - "The answer to that question will always be yes, Twilight."
