Chapter 37; Double Date Gone Wrong

Trigger Warning, there is some body mutilation, vomiting, blood, etc read at your own risk.

Despite Sans's worry about Chara and Papyrus, he had a different problem now. End of year exams. Right now Sans was sitting at his desk, breezing through the practice tests Aizawa had them practice with. He obviously had no problems with the test, even with the college level questions Aizawa mixed in. His old man had his working on much harder questions

Speaking of his dad, he was looking forward to reading his father's journal. Grillby said Alphys had it and threw it at him when he was brought to the new world. He could only fantasize what juicy science-y tidbits his pops had written in there. He clearly remembered the worn leather bound journal from his early years.

He let Ichika go through it to see if it could help with her research. Once she was done with it, he would get his meat covered bones on it and read the hell out of that book.

"Pencils down. Pass up your tests to the front, and I will collect them."

Sans snickered at the groans of Denki, Mina, and Hanta.

"At least the physical exams will be easy. I heard from some upper years that all we have to do is fight the zero pointers from the Sports Festival and Entrance Exam."

Sans raised a skeptical eyebrow at that. There is no way that's true. Sure the older years probably had to do that, but there was no way he and his fellow classmates were doing that.

"Before you brats leave for the day. You'll get these practice tests back in two days. Nezu is closing the school tomorrow for a staff meeting. I expect you to take the time to study."

Sans wanted to laugh again, but his interest peaked with the staff meeting. What was so important that the principal had to shut down the school for a whole day?

"SANS!"

Mina practically glued herself to his back, resting her chin in Sans's fluffy hair.

"Heh, what's up Mina?"

"Me and Kiri are going to go on a camping trip tonight! Wanna bring Bakugo and it'll be a double date?!"

"Heh, sure. Sounds fun. Hey Ground Zero, Eiji. Come here a sec."

Katsuki was quick to replace Mina when she moved. Only he had his arms underneath Sans's and had lifted him out of his seat. His face was buried in the white floof on top of Sans's head.

"Hey Ground Zero, wanna go on an overnight camping trip?"

"With Raccoon Eyes and Kirishima?"

"Yeah, it'll be a double date. But don't worry we'll have our own tent."

"Fine."

"Great, we can leave your guy's school stuff at our place. Let's go pack a bag and we'll meet up at Mina's. Sound good to you two?"

"I guess so."

"Heck yeah it sounds good! I'll head to my place and pack my duffle."

Mina ran out of the classroom.

"I'll head home too. I'll see you soon, Richter."

Katsuki kissed Sans's temple and reluctantly left.

"Ready to head home bro?"

"Yup. Some time in nature is just what we need."

Sans grabbed Eijirou and took a shortcut home. Ichika was nowhere to be found so the boys assumed she was called into the lab. Natsumi spent the last fifteen hours at the station assisting in the search for Papyrus.

Sans and Eijirou spent a quick five minutes throwing some clothes and snacks (and ketchup) into their shared duffle bag. A polite knocking filled the large bedroom causing both boys to look up and see Grillby leaning in the doorway, a soft smirk on his face.

"Good afternoon Sans, Eijirou. Going somewhere?"

"Sup Grillbz. Yeah, Eiji's girlfriend invited me and Ground Zero to a short night out in the woods."

"Is that safe?"

"Grillbz, there's going to be Eijirou the tank, Mina the corrosive acid slinging pink girl, Ground Zero a walking bomb, and me. I can't imagine a safer party to go camping for one night."

"Alright, I'm a worry wart. However, you two know that Miss Natsumi doesn't want you boys to go out right now."

"Aww, Grillbz you ain't gonna rat us out are you?"

"Sans, your current guardians stressed over not leaving you boys alone. Prince Asriel has also ordered me to not leave you alone."

Sans groaned, very much like a petulant child, much to Grillby's amusement.

"What if you come with us?"

"What?"

Eijirou and Grillby echoed each other as they stared at Sans.

"If you come with us, then you ain't disobeying Nats or Azzy. Come on Grillbz, go pack an overnight bag. Eiji, go with him. I'll start packing snacks."

Sans took a shortcut downstairs into the kitchen.

"Fine, but I want those jalapeno poppers and brownies to come!"

"No problem!"

Sans set to prepping ingredients to make a beef stew over a fire. Everything gets proportioned and gets neatly wrapped and placed in a big pot. Sans made sure there was enough for everyone to eat their fill, including him. He was also bringing the leftover poppers and brownies as well as a bag of marshmallows so they didn't have to wait for the stew to finish to start eating.

Sans placed all the ingredients and some spices he wanted to try and cornstarch into the pot and used his magic to carry it to the living room. Grillby had a Crimson Riot duffle and he had his custom made Red Riot duffle, and Sans's plain dark blue one.

"Thanks for grabbing my bag."

"No problem bro! Bakugo said his dad is driving us so we better get going."

"Kay, Grillbz, we're gonna go to the campsite and I'll take a shortcut back to get you."

"Why can't I go with you now?"

"Nah man. Bakugo already knows about you, obviously, but his parents don't. What do you think their thoughts are gonna be when they see a grown man going with their kids to a camping sleepover?."

"Alright, point taken. Alright. I will stay here. Sans, I will cook the stew and bring it with us when you come to get me."

"Awesome, I really missed your cooking Grillby."

Sans made the pot float over to Grillby's arms and grabbed Eijirou.

"See ya soon!"

Sans took a shortcut to Mina's house where Katsuki was typing furiously on his phone. Sans felt his own phone vibrate in his pocket.

<~PRIVATE CHAT~>

LovrBoi - Where the hell are you and Kirishima?

Sans grew a cheshire grin and gave his bag to Eijirou. He snuck up on his prey and pounced. Sans tackled Katsuki to the ground laughing.

"Hey Ground Zero! We're here!"

"Kiri!"

Mina jumped onto Eijirou's back, mirroring Sans. Masaru grinned at the varying personalities of the kids.

"Alright children, hop in the car so we can get going."

Sans skillfully maneuvered Katsuki into the car without him yelling. That in itself is a feat worth recognition.

<~NEW GROUP CHAT: CAMPINGBUDDIES~>

serifskeletor - yo, heds up, my moms dont want me an eiji to be unsupervized so we hav a "chaperon" tagging along .names grillby and hes a chill dude lol

serifskeleton - u kno it, i made th fod and bringing it with grilbz laterrrrrhifslin

Sans's head drooped down and he was fast asleep on Katsuki's chest. Katsuki brought him as close as he could and rested his head on top of his boyfriend's. He watched the shitty memes be passed back and forth between Shitty hair and Raccoon Eyes.

Sans was only woken up after Masaru helped Katsuki and Eijirou set up their tents.

"Bro, it's time to get Grillby."

"Yup, I'll be right back."

Sans stretched and gave a yawn for good measure before taking a shortcut to the house. Grillby was in the kitchen chopping up the last of the vegetables.

"You ready to go Grillbz?"

"Yes, I'm ready. Hitoshi is home and is playing "video games" with Prince Asriel in their room."

Sans snickered at the stubborn usage of "prince" whenever Grillby referred to Azzy.

"Let's go then the others are getting hungry. Your time to shine."

Grillby grabbed his pot and Sans grabbed him. He would have to come back for the other food. He dropped Grillby off at the campsite and went back to the house.

"Sans!"

"Hmm? What's up Azzy?"

"Do you have any snacks me and Hitoshi can have?"

"Here, you can both have one calzone, and two brownies each."

Sans dished out the food and Asriel warmed them up with his fire.

"Thanks Comedian."

"No problemo, oh Great Young Prince of Monsters."

Sans bursted out laughing at Asriel's beet red face as he took his (hopefully) last shortcut of the day.

"Pleasure to see you again, Young Bakugo, and pleased to make your acquaintance, young lady. I am Grillby, I used to look after Sans back in our small town."

"That's so interesting! I've been trying to get all the juicy deets about your guy's hometown and his fam but Sans is like a brick wall!"

"Uhh- "

"Chill Mina, he ain't used to modern slang. Might as well explain to ya about our town, how we came to Japan, etc. Don't interrupt me until I'm done talking, kay?"

"No probs!"

Sans started to tell her exactly what he had told Eijirou two and a half years ago when he first arrived in their world. Mina, true to her word, was quiet and absorbed the knowledge like a sponge. Katsuki helped Grillby with the food as much as the former elemental would allow, and Eiji was munching away on a roasted marshmallow.

After Sans was done talking about Snowdin, his Dad, the Great War, the Underground, and literally everything else he could think of, (including some embarrassing stories from Grillbz from when he was a baby bones), Sans could practically see the cogs in her brain moving.

He knew she didn't care, Sans was still her bestie after all, but Mina was thinking about Gaster. Something about the foggy memories of Sans's past and Grillby's stories about the older Skeleton Monster didn't sit well with her.

"So Asriel is a prince?"

"Nah, he dusted from humans and his Determination brought him back as "Flowey the Flower." A vicious little bastard hell bent for something new. He mellowed out and became a pal long before I came here. And from what he told me, little Azzy was the first one to jump through Pops and Alphys's machine to find me. The little Asriel in the here and now, is what he looked like before he dusted."

Grillby half listened to Sans's explanation as he attended his stewpot. So that's why Prince Asriel was alive. That also explained the little, sentient, Gold Flower that liked to hang around Sans back in the Underground. "Flowey" just randomly started accompanying Sans to the bar for water and heat. Back then Sans brushed off his parental concerns by saying repeatedly that Flowey was a new pal whom he met on patrol.

Having practically raised the boy, Grillby knew Sans wasn't telling the whole truth. Avoiding eye contact, changing the subject, making puns, these were some of the ways Sans would avoid telling the whole truth. He never lied, just told half truths and danced around the subject.

If he was being completely honest, he was happy that Sans felt open enough around these new human friends to tell whole truths, even if it took longer than it would for others.

"Children, dinner is done. Bring me your bowls so I can dish out the stew."

Grillby laddled a healthy amount of beef stew into each child's bowl, and gave them a warmed calzone on the side. He didn't serve himself until after everyone had been fed.

Sans half listened to the dinner conversations between his friends but their voices were growing distant. The white haired boy couldn't help but stare into the fire. He didn't understand why; fire had never interested him before. Granted the only fire he saw before that night was Grillby when he went to the bar, but still. The way the fire danced mezmorized him.

The way the delicate flames danced and swirled around the burning logs, giving way to tiny crackling embers that floated high into the night air. The way the soft flickering light filled the darkness surrounding them.

How the smoked didn't bother him and smelled delightfully of pine and the crisp Autumn scent, despite almost being Summer. It was almost as if the flames were a seductress (AHEM, Katsuki AHEM) drawing his hand closer...

"Sans!"

"What?"

"Bro, we've been calling you for a while, you good?"

"Yeah, I'm fine. What's up Eiji?"

"We have to get more firewood. Me and Bakugo are headed this way and you and Mina are going the other way."

"Grillbz?"

"I am staying by the fire in case of an emergency. I will have my magic spread over the area and I will arrive at a moment's notice, should anything seem amiss."

"Smart thinking FireMan. A'ight. See y'all in a bit. Let's go Mina."

Sans kissed Katsuki's cheek before lazily heading in one direction with Mina.

"Oooo~ Bold move Sans! Kissing the big bad wolf in front of Mr. Fire back there!"

"I know, I could feel the smirk on his face as soon as I did it. Mina, end my existence."

Sans buried his blueberry colored face in his hands as he felt the warmth of Grillby's magic wash over them.

"Hell no! I need to savor your embarrassment! Gasp! Look over there!"

"Did you just say gasp out loud?"

"Shut it, lookie there! There's a log cabin! It's so cute! Maybe the owners have some extra firewood they wouldn't mind parting with!"

"Maybe. Let's go ask."

Sans walked behind Mina as she excitedly knocked/banged on the door.

"Hello? Is anybody home?"

She knocked again, but the door creaked open sending massive horror movie vibes up and down both of their spines.

"Sans."

"Don't you even say it."

"We are going in."

"I hate you so much right now. If I don't make it, tell Mayo, I love her."

Sans was worried the rotting floorboard under their feet would give out any second. He clutched the back of Mina's dark magenta turtleneck sweater until his pale knuckle started to turn light pink.

"Damn, you gotta show me where you bought this thing."

"If we make it out alive, I'll buy you all the sweaters you want."

Sans was cringing at what he hoped was a really, really rusty and wet knife. A meat locker door was off to the side with a chain wrapped around the handle, but a heavy lock lay on the ground, dripping with a thick red liquid. An iron-like smell made itself known to the two as bile started rising from Sans's stomach.

"M-Mina, I d-don't think we sh-should be in here."

Sans could feel his soul racing with anxiety as Mina looked equally terrified but she held a brave facade.

"Someone could be hurt in there. We have to get them to safety before whoever or whatever lives here comes back."

Against his better judgment, he agreed and helped her pull the door open. And he immediately hurled his entire dinner on the spot. There were so many dead bodies in the freezer. Some had been gutted while others were heavily mutilated.

The bodies had a few things in common with each other. A series of numbers written in red on their forearm, they were all hung up on meat hooks, the same permanent look of terror in their haunted and glassy eyes, and a stab wound in the head. There were no bugs or rats to eat the bodies, but that's to be expected. With the below freezing temperatures of the meat locker the bodies have yet to decay. The smell was sticking to their skin and clothes and it made Sans retch harder.

Mina, while she didn't vomit like Sans, screamed with the frequency for dogs to hear. Within seconds the three kicked down the shut door and rushed over. The second the door was in splinters, the smells hit them first. Then after seeing what Mina was screaming at caused all three to seize up.

"What...What the hell? Sans!"

Katsuki was the first to move. He bolted for Sans and covered Mina's eyes as he pressed his boyfriend's face into his chest. Grillby shut the meatlocker door to help get the two outside. Eijirou was already on the phone with the pro heroes, then his moms, Bakugo's folks, Mina's parents. He was panicking and his voice was stuttering and shaky the entire time, but he managed to get everyone there within half an hour.

Multiple police cars and trucks and pro heroes arrived including All Might and Nezu. The two pros in particular felt their heart arche at the sight of Sans.

Ichika and Natsumi tended to their boys as soon as they arrived. Similar story for the Ashidos and Bakugos. Grillby stayed with the Kirishimas' and explained to the best of his knowledge as clearly as he could to Natsumi. He was no stranger to death and even the cruelty of mentally unwell, but this was horrific.

Back when he had to fight and kill in the war, no one dared to desecrate the dead. It was frowned upon for both species. He may be new to this "New World" but that rule has to hold up here from the looks of disgust, fear, and horror on all the humans' faces.

Grillby helped corral the kids and Sans into Natsumi's police cruiser. Sans was given a paper bag to breathe into and has yet to actually let go of Mina's arm. He had her poor arm in a death grip but she either didn't care or notice. Sans had seen plenty of horrific things, hell even done a few himself, but to mutilate a body so badly...the LOVE the person must have after doing that scared him more than what he actually saw. The smell also didn't help matters.

As Natsumi drove/sped down the road followed closely by Shota, Hizashi, and Nezu they were being watched. A pair of shimmering, dark golden eyes watched the cars' speed down the road. After the cars were out of sight, the eyes disappeared back under the darkness provided by the trees.
