Chapter 16; A Cold and A Bank Robbery
Sans woke up in bed, feeling uncomfortably warm and stuffy. He was on a cushy surface but he couldn't open his eyes because of the bright light streaming through a window.
"Hmm, Sans? Morning."
"Wha... It's hot."
"What?"
Katsuki pressed the back of his hand to Sans's forehead. Sans's face was flushed light blue, his speech was slurred slightly, and his skin was sticky and clammy.
"Katsuki, Sans, wake uuup, Katsuki, what's going on?"
"Dad, I think he's sick! What do I do?!"
"First, calm down. Second, get out of bed. Go to the medicine cabinet and get a cooling patch. Then make some rice porridge. We can keep him comfortable until The Kirishimas' can come get him."
Katsuki was tripping over himself to get to the bathroom. Masaru chuckled and tucked Sans into the covers. Katsuki returned with a cooling patch.
"Thank you Katsuki. Now go make some porridge with honey."
Masaru laughed at his son. Katsuki was acting like him when Mitsuki was sick when they were his age. Like father, like son. He kept Sans's temperature regulated until Katsuki came back with a bowl of bright red porridge.
"Katsuki -"
"Sans likes ketchup. So I put some in the porridge."
"He can't have that, Katsuki. It would make him more sick to have that much ketchup. Please remake it with a little bit of honey."
Katsuki grumbled and took the bowl back to the kitchen. Masaru shook his head and placed a thermometer in Sans's mouth; holding it in place so it didn't fall down his throat. While he waited for his temperature reading, he took out his phone.
Masaru and Ichika chat
Masaru - Hey, Ichika? It's Masaru. Sans caught a cold. Would you or Natsumi mind coming to get him?
Ichika - Hey, it's Natsumi. Ichi is still sleeping. I'll be over to pick him up. Think you can wait a little longer?
Masaru - No problem. Katsuki's making him porridge right now. See you soon.
Masaru has signed off
Masaru put his phone on the nightstand when he heard the thermometer beep.
"99°? Any higher, we'd have to take you to the hospital."
Katsuki rushed in with a bowl of perfect, golden rice porridge and a bottle of cold and flu medication. Katsuki stuck close to the bed and watched with hawk-like precision while Masaru fed Sans spoon after spoon of the porridge. Sans turned his head away after the tenth spoonful.
"Here, Katsuki. Take this to the kitchen. Natsumi will be here soon."
"You take it."
Masaru sighed, but one look at his son, holding Sans's hand, made him smile and ruffle his hair.
"Alright. Try not to wake him up. I'll be right back."
Masaru took the half empty bowl to the kitchen, where his beautiful wife was nursing a cup of coffee.
"Good morning, gorgeous."
"Too much sap, too early in the morning."
Masaru laughed and kissed her temple.
"Where are the boys?"
"Katsuki's keeping an eye on Sans. He, unsurprisingly, caught a cold. Natsumi is coming soon -"
The doorbell rang rapidly.
"Is here, to pick him up."
Masaru walked to the door, and barely backed away in time when it swung open to show, not his friend, but a tall, pale, white haired young man bursting through the door wearing a police uniform. He was tripping over himself to yank his shoes off before running toward Katsuki's room. Mitsuki rushed into action and clotheslined him.
Papyrus fell backwards while Natsumi laughed hysterically in the genkan. She was also wearing her uniform. The cuffs on her belt rattled as she bent over herself.
"I told you to wait! Thanks Mitsuki, this is Sans's brother Papyrus D. Gaster."
"Where is Sans?!"
"Calm your ass down, and you can -"
"The hell are you doing here?!"
"Katsuki, listen -"
"No, you heard that bastard yesterday!"
"He didn't say it out of malice. It was a genuine shock for him. He loves Sans more than his own safety, as you can see."
Katsuki glared venom laced daggers at Sans's older brother.
"You hurt him again, I'll kill you."
Katsuki's tone sent shivers up the spine of every adult in the room. Usually it's always bluster when he threatens people, but this time was different. His voice was level, cold. Full of vindictive promise.
"Sans is in here."
Katsuki led Papyrus into his room, where Sans lay on his side, in a fetal position, clutching the blankets in a death grip.
"Sans..."
Papyrus kneeled next to the bed. He took off his gloves and ran his fingers through his older brother's hair, just relishing the fact that Sans was alive and okay.
"I guess he doesn't have one HP in this world."
Papyrus carefully wrapped Sans in the blanket he had a death grip on and lifted him gently in his arms.
"Paps?"
"Hey Sans. Are you feeling alright, brother?"
"Mm sore, and can't breathe right..."
"Don't start panicking Papyrus. Take him to the cruiser, I'll be out in a minute."
Papyrus did as requested of him, protecting Sans with his whole body. Natsumi laughed into her hand.
"Masa, what was his temperature at, did he eat or drink, you know the deal."
"When I last checked his temp, it was at ninety-nine, ate half a bowl of rice porridge with honey, and he has not used the restroom yet, no vomit either. Thanks for coming so quick Nat. Did we pull you from your duties?"
"Yeah, but it's no worry. We were in the neighborhood and I grabbed Ichika's phone by mistake when I left. We'll drop him off at the hospital with Eiji and Ichika'll pick him up from there when the paramedics approve."
"Attention units, we have an A/R at Higo Bank in Kagoshima Prefecture."
"10-4, 22-7-0-5 on route, requesting additional back up, and RA for potential hostage injuries."
Natsumi started panicking.
"Thanks for taking care of him, I have to go, right now! Papyrus start the car!"
Natsumi ran out of the house, grabbing her shoes on the way. She forced Papyrus in the passenger seat. Eijirou cradled Sans as he looked frantically between his mom and Papyrus.
"Sweetie, are you buckled?"
"Yeah?"
"Good. Hold on tight."
Natsumi sped out.
"Papyrus, turn on the lights."
"Mrs. Natsumi, what is an A/R?"
"There is an Armed Robbery in process at the bank close to our old house in Kagoshima. Hold on tight."
The blaring lights allowed Natsumi to speed through traffic and she skidded to a halt in front of the bank. Three ambulances and a fire truck arrived with them.
"Eijirou, take Sans to the ambulance over there and stay in that truck. If I see you before it's safe, I will ground you until your deathbed, do you understand me?"
"Of course mom. I'll go, and I'll keep Sans safe."
"Papyrus, escort them to that ambulance, and I swear to god if you shoot me, I will have your badge. Go."
<~With Eijirou K.~>
Eijirou carried Sans and ran next to Papyrus until he and Sans were securely locked in the truck. The paramedic quickly took Sans and hooked him up to a nasal cannula, an iv drip, and held a thermometer in his mouth.
"Was he shot?"
"No, he has a fever."
"Natsumi's kids?"
"She's my mom, Sans is sorta my brother."
"She sent me pictures. I love the one of Sans going on his first - holy shit!"
"What?!"
"His temperature's at 104°. Kid, put this mask on and stay on that side of the truck."
Eijirou did as told and watched as the paramedic did her job. He was terrified and had no idea, magic or not, if Sans would be okay.
<~With Natsumi K.~>
"Papyrus, stay behind me!"
Natsumi charged forward and burst into the bank, gun aimed at one of the robbers. Papyrus had his gun trained on the second one.
"Sir, put the gun down, now."
"Get out before I start shooting people!"
"I would advise against that sir. Right now, we've got the most accurate snipers in Japan focusing their sights on you. If you shoot anyone, you will leave this facility in a bodybag. Drop the gun now."
"Dude, snipers?! I did not sign up for this!"
"Shut up Hatori! We have gone too far to just stop now!"
"Hatori, you don't have to go through with this. Drop your gun and get down, and you can get a reduced sentence."
"I don't want to go to jail!"
The robber shakily got on the ground and slid his gun toward Natsumi.
"It's-It's not loaded! I didn't want to kill anyone!"
"I told you to load the damn thing!"
"Sir, if you move a single muscle, I will shoot you. Hatori, I want you to slide on the floor over to me. But I want you to move slowly."
"No, I-I need to make this right."
Hatori jumped to his feet and body slammed the other man to the ground. A bang was heard just as Hatori slumped to the side. Before he could stand back up, a gun smacked into his face and he fell to the ground, unconscious. Natsumi threw the unloaded gun at him to prevent him from doing anything.
"Papyrus, restrain him."
Natsumi rushed over to Hatori and saw the bullet wound in his stomach.
"Papyrus! Get the paramedics in here now! Applying first aid."
Natsumi took off her jacket and applied pressure to the wound.
"I needed...the money...my little sister....she's in the hospital....cancer....No one...will hire me...she'll die....without treatment."
"Hatori, if you can stay awake, I will help you. You don't have to rob banks to help your sister."
"I'm...so tired..."
"No Hatori stay awake. Keep talking to me. How old is your sister?"
"Kai is...seven...she is such a...sweetheart...will you...take care of her...if I...don't make it?"
"How old are you, Hatori?"
"I'm...fifteen....next week."
"You're a minor? Where're your parents?"
"Dad was killed...overseas in...Pakistan...Mom died in...childbirth with Kai..."
"When you survive, you and Kai will come to live with me. Where are those damn paramedics?!"
Papyrus rushed in with three paramedics.
"Take over, I applied first aid with constant pressure. Victim's name is Hatori, gunshot wound to the upper-left abdominal region. Do not let this boy die so help me god."
Multiple bones held down the shooter by his ankles, wrists, waist, and neck.
"Papyrus, the bones on his wrists."
"Right."
The bones on his wrist lost their orange glow and fell to the side. Natsumi was quick to cuff him as tightly as she was allowed to without getting penalized.
"Take him to my cruiser and go check on the boys, make sure they're okay. I'm riding with Hatori to the hospital."
<~With Papyrus~>
After Papyrus locked the man in the cruiser, he practically ran to the ambulance he escorted the two boys to. When he saw his older brother, the skeleton he looked up to the most, hooked up to an iv drip and a respirator, he felt his entire world shatter.
"We're taking him to the hospital.Sir, I cannot have you here. I'm friends with Natsumi. Sans is in good hands."
"No! He's my brother, I have to be with him! Eijirou, get out!"
"Papyrus!"
Natsumi stormed over to the ambulance.
"Get to the damn cruiser and take that man to the precinct. Sans will meet us at the hospital, and you need to do your damn job! Eijirou, you are to ride with Sans and make sure he's stable. I want hourly reports and for you to text your mother where we are, understood?"
"Yeah, no problem mom."
Papyrus gave Sans one last worried look, and a pissed one to Natsumi, before going to the cruiser. He hopped into the driver's seat, started the engine, and sped down the road. The poor steering wheel looked to be conforming to Papyrus's tight grip.
"I swear, when I'm out of these damn cuffs, I'm going to -"
"Going to what? The boy you shot is going to live,, so you're not very good at killing people are you? My brother is alone, and because of your idiotic stunt, I can't be there for him."
"Your brother shouldn't be such a damn weakling then!"
"Don't speak about my brother. Sans is not a weakling. Unlike you, Sans is smart, and has the biggest soul of anyone I have ever met."
"Sans? What a stupid name. I should've saved the bullet from Hatori and used it on him instead!"
A bone with a tapered point almost pierced the man's neck, only a couple milimeters from causing actual damage.
"You will never speak of my brother in such a vulgar way, filthy human."
Papyrus's right eyelight glowed bright orange, the same orange glow that surrounded the bone. The man wet himself, and stayed quiet for the rest of the ride, fear what Officer D. Gaster would do to him otherwise.
<~With Sans~>
Sans woke up in the hospital, with a strange plastic thing up his nose and a sharp metal rod in the back of his hand. Eijirou was sleeping on his right, Bakugo on his left, Ichika and Natsumi spoke to a doctor in the hall, and Papyrus slept uncomfortably on a small couch.
"Hey sweetie, are you feeling okay?"
Natsumi rushed over to him, while Ichika stayed with the doctor, quietly arguing.
"I feel like I was left in Hotland and my skull feels like it's in Waterfall."
"SANS!"
Papyrus tripped over himself to hug Sans. When he made it to Sans, however, he was ery gentle with a small, but warm hug.
"Richter."
"Hey Ground Zero, sorry if I scared you this morning. I never get sick."
"Sure doesn't look that way to me."
"Richter and Ground Zero, eh?"
"Eijirou smirked at them both.
"Isn't it too soon to be having pet names for each other?"
Both boys' faces went up in flames, and Sans covered his face with his pillow. Everyone in the room laughed at their mild embarrassment. Except for Papyrus, his grin tightened, and he couldn't help but cringe at the fact.
Eijirou tactfully didn't say a word when he saw Sans and Bakugo intertwine their fingers; he did hide a smirk and send a picture to Mina of course.
