Chapter 1: The Portal *REVISED*
Sans laughed at his joke while Papyrus raged on how he should stop making jokes and patrol more. Gaster walked behind his two sons smiling and writing in an old and waterlogged notebook. The joke Sans made was lost to time, but he could never forget what happened next...
"Sans! Look out!"
The fear and panic in his little brother's voice made Sans turn around. A wormhole-thing opened up near Grillby's. Said fire elemental was holding onto his bar door holding a couple of his patrons to the ground. Gaster was holding back Papyrus and more Snowdin residents back with bones. The vortex-like winds had already lifted him off the ground before his dad or brother could reach him. He could feel himself being slowly pulled toward the portal.
"Sans!"
"p-papyrus, dad! help me!"
Sans tried to use a shortcut, a blaster, anything to help him get away, but something was interfering with his magic. His magic was completely useless to him now.
Papyrus could hear every ounce of the panic and distress from his older brother, and it scared him endlessly. He rushed to help Sans, hurriedly bypassing his father's outstretched hand. He grabbed Sans's hand, and caught the edge of his jacket sleeve. His other hand was firmly wrapped around one of Undyne's spears. Said spear was lodged in the ground, unwavering.
For a brief second, Sans had hope. Hope in his brother and hope in that spear. A loud ripping came from his sleeve where Papyrus's phalanges gripped it. The more his sleeve ripped, the more scared he became. After a few more seconds, the inevitable happened.
His sleeve ripped completely.
He grabbed at Papyrus's clothing, trying to keep himself grounded. He managed to snag Papyrus's scarf, but it was a futile effort. He was sucked into the portal thing with Papyrus's scarf clutched close to his chest. Flashing rings of blue and white came and went at impossibly fast speeds. The speed was making him nauseous and he felt his lunch coming up. Blinding pains coursed through each and every one of his bones and joints. He felt terrible pains before, one of the worst being from GENECIDE ROUTES from Frisk and Chara, but this...This was horrible. The worst pains he ever felt in, probably, his whole life.
<~>
The wormhole opened back up and he felt himself land in a head of metal and trash. Shakily standing up, he took in his surroundings. It looked to be a back alley and he fell into a couple of trash cans and trash bags. He had a massive migraine pounding away in his skull. He wrapped Papyrus's scarf around his neck, not wanting it to escape him.
"Hello? Hey man, are you okay?"
Sans jerked his head up and made eye contact with a human boy with red eyes and black hair. Sans immediately concluded he was on the surface. Maybe human sorcerers wanted to summon some monsters to the surface for fights?
He ran down the alley, not prepared mentally or physically to deal with a human. His magic was completely drained. He couldn't use any of his magic but it was all gone regardless. His dad's annoying voice flooded his mind, but he was glad it did.
~"Sans, there will be times when you won't be able to rely on your magic. In those times, the best choice you have is to flee. Run away to live and fight another day. Wait for me and your brother and we'll fight as a family."
So that is exactly what Sans did. Sans booked it down the alley. He won't be able to wait for his dad and bro, but he could recuperate his losses. The human ran after him and caught up to the unathletic skeleton with ease. Sans felt tired, more than he usually did. He fell face first into the pavement under him. His nasal cavity felt...strange.
"Oh crap! Don't worry man! I'll have my mom come help!"
Sans's face felt hot. He felt the human pick him up and start running. Within minutes he was lifted into some kind of machine.
"Mom! He's burning up real bad!"
"We'll take him back to the house, if he gets worse we'll take him to the hospital."
"I'll carry him to the car!"
"Okay, but calm yourself Eijirou, we don't want to needlessly injure him, do we?"
Sans groaned and tugged at Papyrus's scarf. He noticed immediately that the scarf didn't pull at his cervical vertebrae. The comforting feeling was replaced by an uncomfortable choking feeling. Was something lodged in his neck and skull? He would have to investigate at a later time. He...wasn't feeling too hot...at the moment.
<~>
"Ma! He's waking up!"
Sans opened his eyes to the same black haired human male, a similar looking older human female, and an older blonde human female. The black haired human female shooed the other two out of the room to finish dinner.
"Hey, sweetie. Are you okay? You gave my wife and son quite the scare."
"I'm fine. Where am I?"
"My house near Musutafu prefecture."
"What? No...no, I was just in Snowdin. I...Where am I?"
"I've...never heard of Snowdin. What happened?"
"I wish I could tell ya lady. The last thing I remember was Papyrus - where is it?!"
"What's wrong?"
The sudden panicked aggressiveness caught her off guard.
"Papyrus's scarf! The-the-the cloth- the red scarf I had with me!"
"Don't worry sweetheart. I had it cleaned. It's right here."
She got up and walked to the nightstand next to the bed. Papyrus's scarf lay neatly cleaned and folded in her hands. Sans snatched it away from her, holding it close to his chest.
"Th-thank you, human."
"Human? Kid, what happened to you?"
"I don't know. One minute I was joking around with my brother, and the next I'm being sucked into some kind of worm hole."
"Sounds like a transdimensional type of quirk...So, what was Snowdin like?"
Sans didn't like the prying nature of this woman, but he could tell she had no noteworthy sins and that she was genuinely curious and worried.
"Can I use your bathroom first? I'm, bone-tired, and could use a shower."
"Of course. I'll have Eiji bring some of his old clothes up for you."
"Thanks."
The blonde woman showed him to the bathroom. He paced in the bathroom, trying to figure out why the humans haven't killed a skeleton monster yet. Maybe life on the surface has evolved over the past couple of years. Then he saw himself in the mirror. He nearly destroyed the mirror with his magic. A familiar bright blue eyelight stared back at him with a Gaster Blaster poised to attack behind him.
Sans dispelled his blaster and turned his back to the mirror. His hands rose to his head to clutch at his...hair.
"Calm down, Sans. Just calm, down. You're still you, just in a new, human body. Everything is going to be fine. You've had to deal with way weider crap before."
"Hey, man! Ma said you wanted a shower, so I got you some clothes. Can I come in?"
"Sure."
Sans pulled himself away from his unnerving reflection to look at the human kid opening the door.
"Hey. When you're done your shower, dinner's ready for ya! Ma made katsudon!"
"No problem, kiddo."
"Kiddo? Dude, you're the same age as me."
"Maybe in this body, but I'm much, much older than you."
Sans used his magic to push him out and lock the door.
"Might as well get used to this flesh suit."
Bone white skin, black sclera and irises, with pupils, light gray eye bags, messy white hair falling just below fleshy human ears, a fleshy human nose, pale pink lips... He quickly looked down and his new, fleshy human hands with black fingernails. With a shaky breath, he paced his hands at the hem of his shirt.
Sans shed his dirty white shirt and blue shorts, and looked into the mirror again. He had assumed that looking like a tubby skeleton, he would look similar as a human. Not even close.
He was as skinny as could be. He looked healthy enough, compared to the human male who was Frisk's father. That human was apparently on a, see-food, and was disgusting to look at. However, he was still short. He used to be 4'5, but now he looks 5'4. Still short, but taller than what he used to be. He supposed he should be relieved to still be alive above anything else.
Sans had to take a minute to figure out how to work the shower. After he did, the former skeleton took a hot shower, actually enjoying the feeling of hot water. He was never able to feel temperatures this well before, and it was amazing.
"Hey dude, I got a towel for you."
"Okay."
Sans got out of the shower and opened the door. Water pooled on the ground below him and he was more relaxed now than he'd ever been. The human's face went bright red after seeing him naked and threw the towel at Sans.
"Thanks!"
Sans laughed at the retreating human before closing the door. He dressed himself in a black shirt and a pair of red shorts. The shirt hung on his frame like a dress and the shorts had to be tied tightly around his waist to prevent them falling off. Papyrus's scarf was secured around his neck. He wasn't about to part with it anytime soon.
"Sweetie, are you hungry?"
"Yup, thanks for your help lady."
"Please, call me Ichika. I hope we'll be able to talk more over dinner. I want to help you, if I can. I'm a scientist, so I might be able to help, if only a little. My wife Natsumi is a police officer, she might be able to help you in ways I can't."
"If I gotta call you Ichika, you hafta call me Sans. I'll tell you what I know."
Sans followed the black haired human, Ichika, down the stairs where the blonde mother and son sat waiting with full bowls of food. The human kid was staring at his bowl with a fiery intensity that Undyne would be proud of. Sans was seated next to Ichika and across from the kid. His food was delicious and he went back for three extra bowls until he felt full.
He could feel the inquisitive stares on his head, but he refused to acknowledge them. After eating four whole bowls of food, Sans was ready to speak. He patted his new stomach, feeling satisfied. Ichika sent her son to the kitchen to wash the dishes while she and her wife sat in front of Sans.
"Alright so, like I told you earlier, Ichika, I'm not sure what happened. I was joking around with my little brother, and a second later I'm being sucked into a wormhole-portal-vortex-thingamajig."
"Is your world any different than ours?"
"Definitely. Where I'm from, I'm a skeleton monster, same as my brother and father. Snowdin, my home, is a perpetually snowing village of monsters. When I was in the wormhole thing, I was in agonizing pain. I assume that's when this meat suit was forced on me."
"When you say monsters -"
"I mean monsters. My friend Alphys is a lizard woman, her wife Undyne is a mutated fish monster, my family are skeletons, King Asgore, Prince Asriel, and Queen Toriel are royal monsters, etc. We monsters that populate the Underground are peaceful and don't cause chaos or whatnot. That's not to disregard the existence of humans. Humans all live on the surface after forcing all of Monster-kind underground."
"I see... Well, it honestly sounds like you were brought here via a transdimensional quirk. It's an unbelievably rare type of quirk, but they can happen."
"I don't think there is anyone in Japan who has that type of quirk. They would've had to be registered at the station, the hospital, or the Hero Commision. It was either a child who just got their quirk or an unsavory character.
"Great, so what's a quirk?"
"Come up to my office. I'll give you the rundown of this world's power dynamics, laws, and anything else you might need to know."
Sans followed Ichika upstairs and spent the next three hours learning about quirks, basic human culture, money, heroes and villains, and how justice is handled.
"Alright, I think I understand enough for now. This body is *yawn* so strange."
"I bet. I'll have a futon set up in Eijirou's room for the night. We can continue tomorrow."
"There's more?"
"Yes. You shouldn't spread it around that you're from a different world. Villains, governmental officials, or even heroes would seek you out and try to get you. Regardless of your actual age, you look like Eijirou's age. If I enroll you in his school, you can learn more about the world than what I can tell you. You would essentially be a foreign exchange student. Sound good to you?"
"Tibia, honest with ya, it sounds fine, but would that even work?"
"It'll work out fine. Now let's get your, sleepy bones, to bed."
"Heh, good one."
Sans was down a hall. The walls were decorated with many pictures of the human family he'd been interacting with. Baby pictures, family outings, etc. He might've never had those moments with his own family, but it made him homesick. They reached a dark red door and the blonde and kid were setting up a bed near a wall.
"Sans, this is Natsumi and Eijirou. I know you all already met, but introductions never have a time limit. Eiji agreed to room with you until we can figure out what our next step will be. I hope you don't mind."
"Nah, it's cool. Nice ta meetcha Eijirou, Natsumi. I'm Sans. Sans the...human."
