"Ah! Here you are! Woah, Levi, that hoodie is too big for you, you almost disappear into it!" Erwin exclaimed as I stayed at the entrance, petrified.
"What are you waiting for? Come in!" he incited me, showing hospitality by opening his big arms.
I hesitantly sat with him, playing with some slices of bread to spend time. Only a few minutes passed until the waiter came to our table to take our orders. As soon as we agreed on what to take, the man left us alone.
"So, um... did you manage to finish your work?" Erwin questioned randomly; he was clearly trying to break the ice to avoid feeling even more embarrassed.
"Oh, yes, luckily," I smiled shyly, trying not to look at him in the face: if I did, I would surely blush. He looked even better than the other days: he was growing his hair a little bit longer than usual, but it was still bent backwards with a solid layer of hair gel, which made it shine of a beautiful golden color. The clothes were not casual like when he was at work; he was wearing a stylish blue jacket matched with a pair of dark blue pants; the pockets on its sides were large enough for Erwin's big hands, and I could see his temptation to keep his hands in them.
The lunch proceeded quietly, until I suddenly got distracted by the hammering headache; cursing silently, I rubbed my fingers on my temples again, at the limit of tolerance.
"What's wrong, Levi?" Erwin's expression changed immediately from happy to worried as he protracted his head towards me "Are you feeling bad? Do you want me to..."
"No, no, it's okay. Just... a very strong headache. It has been insisting since early morning." I murmured without thinking; I wasn't really paying much attention to what Erwin was saying.
"Ah... I see. Are you sure you don't want me to call anyone or get you anything?" he insisted.
"Yes, I'm sure. Thank you."
"Alright. Just try not to faint in front of me, okay?" he let out a small chuckle, automatically taking my hand. I instantly froze, cold blood running through my veins. His eyes widened as soon as he realized what the had just done, and he withdrew his hand quickly: "Oh, God, sorry. I just got too worried, I guess."
He chuckled again to cover the embarrass as I looked at him suspiciously: "Why are we here, Erwin? And most of all, why are you so nervous?"
He sighed heavily, lowering his head: "Damn it, Levi. You're too smart, you always know when I'm hiding something."
"No, it's not because I'm smart, Erwin, it's just pretty evident," I rolled my eyes.
"Oh... wow. Um... well, I..."
"C'mon, Erwin. It might be hard to say, whatever you're hiding, but please, get to the point quickly."
"Okay. So, we've been knowing each other for eight months now and... do you actually think... we would make a good couple? I mean, you and I."
"I... what?!" I firstly refused to believe his words. A lump was already forming in my throat as I tried to process what he had said.
"Well, because... I don't know, Levi. I don't know. I've just... started developing some feelings for you. It's actually weird, I've never experienced anything like this before and I... I don't know what to say nor how to feel. I'm sorry for blurting out all of this stuff in front of you, but I've kept it inside my head for a while and... I just thought it was time for me to tell you."
"I... Erwin..." my voice sounded feeble and full of emotion as I stuttered, in utter surprise.
"Look, just forget what I said, I'm sorry," Erwin awkwardly waved his hands in the air, regretful "I've been too rushed. I don't even know if you like boys. I mean... oh, my God, I'm sorry."
"Shut up," I silenced the blond haired boy causing him to open his eyes wide. I raised a finger up to take a pause, then whispered with a honeyed voice: "Erwin, why did it take you this long to say it?"
"Well, I... wait, what do you mean?"
"Dude, are you serious or is this one of your stupid jokes?"
"No, Levi, I'm dead serious."
An awkward silence dropped at our table as I tried to find the right words to say.
"You know, you're so dumb, Erwin Smith. How couldn't you see that?"
"See what?" he questioned, confused.
I furiously slammed both of my hands against the table as I got closer to his face, my lips trembling nervously: "That... that I feel the s- same way. I waited for so long, fearing that you might not reciprocate, that you might be straight. I've always repressed my feelings for you, but I failed, according to a lot of people. Everybody could see it, everybody... everybody except you."
"... Oh," was everything that escaped from Erwin's mouth when he realized "So you are..."
"I am, you idiot," I smirked. I was the one to take his hand, this time. I was shaking like a leaf, but I took his hand, despite all the hate I held for physical contact. He was the one. The only one I had the guts to do this things with.
What I had imagined wasn't wrong then. I couldn't believe it; this was everything I had wished for: us holding hands, me staring into his ocean blue eyes.
"Well, that's awesome, I guess," he exclaimed ecstatic as he ruffled my hair playfully. Then he stopped all of sudden and his voice softened: "You should smile more often, you know? You look cute."
"O-Oh," I babbled, surprised "Uh... thanks, I'll try."
"You want coffee?" he asked kindly, causing me to hint another smile.
"Hell, yeah. I definitely need coffee today."
