Epilogue
Liv yawned and stretched her arms out wide. She looked over the final page of the document she was working on and let out a satisfied sigh. She was finally done and it had only taken her until ten at night.
She loved Ezra but they needed to work on his research hour predictions. When he had handed her the case that morning, he had told her it wouldn't take more than the day. But here she was, finishing hours after everyone else had already gone home.
She figured he was just taking advantage of the fact that she had more free time. Since taking the bar the week before, all the hours she had devoted to studying were now wide open.
Ezra had taken her out to a celebratory dinner the night after, insisting there was cause for celebration just for her taking the test. She argued the celebration should wait until she found out whether she had passed or not.
She also suspected Ezra was celebrating having his girlfriend back. The last six months she had dedicated every minute outside of work to study for the test. He had played his role of dedicated boyfriend, quizzing her and talking her off the ledge when she was ready to quit, but she knew she hadn't been great company.
She had felt guilty when she didn't just snap back into her old self the moment the test was over. But she had only moved from the stress of preparing to the stress of waiting for her results.
She looked down at the case in front of her and suspected maybe Ezra had given her a big project as payback for all the pain she had caused him the last six months. She told herself she would give him extra kisses the next time she saw him and try to forget the fact that her future as a lawyer hung in the balance.
As she stacked the files she heard footsteps behind her. Before she could turn around, arms snaked around her waist and Ezra kissed her cheek.
"I thought you left," she smiled. She turned her head to kiss him.
"I wanted to wait for you," he said. "And I wanted to kiss you."
She laughed but she knew what he meant. One of the first ground rules they had put into place when they started dating was keeping it one-hundred percent professional at the office, which meant no kissing, no flirting, no partiality, no nothing.
They didn't want their relationship to be a topic in the secretaries rumor mill and they had been successful. After dating for almost a year and a half, only the select few they had chosen to tell knew that they were together.
Of course, they weren't strict rule-followers and they found it thrilling to steal a kiss in a hidden corner every now-and-then. Even after hours, when they were the only ones still at the office, it still felt exciting to kiss in the open.
Liv turned in Ezra's hold, wrapping her arms around his neck and kissed him. He reacted instantly, pulling her as close as he could. At the office, she was usually the one to pull away first.
He could get reckless and say he didn't care about who knew they were together but she did care.
But tonight she didn't pull away.
She held him tight and kissed him deeply, trying to tell him how grateful she was for his patience the last six months without saying a word.
When he was the one to pull away, she found she was disappointed. But the feelings didn't last long when she found him looking at her with his intense dark eyes. His eyes were her favorite thing about him because they had such a wide range of expression.
In the courtroom they were like an impending storm, ready to rip the roof off his opponents' argument. But then she would catch his gaze on her when it was just the two of them in his apartment and the look he gave her was that of a man finally finding what he had been searching for his whole life.
When he looked at her like that, she knew if he asked her to be his forever, she would say yes.
It was the same way he was looking at her now. She stole one more kiss because she couldn't help herself when he looked at her like that and turned back to her desk. She grabbed the stack of files and handed them to him.
"Put these away," she instructed. "Let me pack up my stuff and then we'll get food."
He obeyed and she moved quickly. By the time he was back at her desk, she was ready to go. He reached for her hand and they walked to the elevator together. He pushed the call button and pulled her close, kissing her cheek.
Even though the elevator had been the beginning of their awful adventure together, they couldn't help but feel a strange appreciation every time they were on it. It had led them to finding each other.
They stepped on together, and Liv pressed the button for the lobby. She stepped back to Ezra's side and was reaching for his hand when the elevator came to a sudden stop. They both swayed but managed to stay on their feet. The lights were still on and the button for the lobby was still lit.
Liv frowned as she stepped forwards and hit the button for the lobby again. Nothing happened. She went to hit it again and the elevator jumped back into motion. She wobbled but Ezra was there to steady her. She looked at him and let out a shaky laugh.
"For a moment I was worried we were going to be stuck again," she said.
Ezra pulled her in for a tight hug and held her until the elevator dinged as it came to a stop. He kissed her cheek and they turned to find the doors opening on a path of red rose petals lined with candles. She frowned and looked at him, but he only smiled as he took her hand and led her out of the elevator.
"What's going on?" she asked.
He only answered with a bigger smile as they reached a door. Before he opened it, she looked around and realized they had somehow ended up on the top floor of the building.
"How did we get up here?"
"Come on," he smiled, opening the door.
Liv was speechless as she stepped out onto the rood. It had been transformed into an oasis of roses. The ground was covered in rose petals, there were bouquets of roses everywhere with candles making a path to the center and candles on the wall running along the perimeter.
Her eyes were wild as they tried to take in the magical sight but the moment Ezra went down on one knee, everything else faded away. He was all she could see.
"Liv," he started, her favorite look in his eyes.
"Yes!" she said.
He laughed. "I didn't even..."
"Yes!" she said again.
"But..."
"But there is nothing you need to say," she rushed to say, the words spilling out of her mouth. "I want you forever. It's simple. You don't need to lay out your five-point argument like a lawyer," he laughed and she knew that was exactly what he had planned, "because you've been convincing me every single day since the night we got stuck in the elevator.
"From the way you've become so kind and thoughtful to the people around you and learned how to truly collaborate, to the way you have supported me through these last six months. I know it's been hard and I've barely been present, but you never wavered in your love and patience," she said, her voice growing passionate.
"The world might see a highly successful lawyer in the fancy suits and car, but all I see if the man who goes bowling with my dad and puzzles with my mom. I see the person I want to give all my love to for the rest of my life." She knew there was more she could say but when she focused on the way he was looking at her she realized everything she could say, he already knew. "I rest my case," she said.
He laughed. "Liv, I am rarely out-argued, but you just did exactly that. Everything you said was better than what I could say. So I'll keep this short and simple."
He pulled a small box out of his pocket.
"Liv Coleson, will you marry me and spend the rest of our lives out-arguing me?"
"I already said yes like three times. Keep up Lexington," she laughed and he laughed louder. "I guess if I have to say it one more time."
But he was on his feet and kissing her, his arms wrapped around her waist, making it clear one more 'yes' was unnecessary.
