2. Being Santa's little helper
My mother finally got up to find the three of us digging into her cookies that were made the day before.
"What is going on here?" She asked her British accent strong in her voice. I also still had mine as I visited my homeland every few months but she had just recently left Britain to live in America and to 'have a change of weather as rain gets boring'.
Pia lowered her head in shame while Kane and I had our mouths open in surprise. Busted. Our early morning feast had been discovered by the short lady who gave me life. She raised a perfect eyebrow at us, waiting for an explanation. I clicked my fingers and the cookies we were previously holding, floated back into the tin.
"I don't know what you're talking about," I said. My mum came over and flicked me before unlocking the cupboard that had our presents. Pia and I had three boxes while Kane and my mum had two. I decided to open the box covered with stars first because it was the smallest. Ripping the wrapping paper, I found a set of inappropriate underwear and my cheeks flushed as I knew who gave it to me. Pia used the camera I got her to take a photo of my reaction.
"You look stunning, darling," she drawled out, laughing.
I threw some paper at her then moved onto the next gift in a blue box. Inside, I found two tickets to France for a week in February.
"Oh my god! Thank you!" I squealed to no one in particular.
I expected Kane to reply but my mother did instead. "Welcome, love." She had already opened her gifts which were a book set she had always wanted and a pair of new heels.
Kane pushed the last box towards me, now wearing the gold watch I had got him. "Here." I carefully unwrapped it until I saw another ticket but to somewhere else.
You are invited to watch the annual fashion show at Royals University...
I stared at it for a while, not sure what to do with it. Do I scream with excitement? Or maybe go for the basic thank you? I opted with the latter.
"Erm...thanks," I said with forced happiness. He seemed to believe it and started explaining why I was...lucky.
"You get to watch me walk in the front row," he replied pointing at the piece of card. "I'm glad you like it. You can now see me in action."
I nodded my head, feigning my joy of watching him strut up and down a catwalk. I was not interested in fashion at all and I told him multiple times but obviously it didn't sink in. So on New year's eve I was going to support my boyfriend with his passion. Pia, being the good friend she was, noticed my discomfort and gestured that we should talk in the living room.
I got up and followed her then she shut the door behind us so we couldn't be heard. She grabbed the invite from my hand and started to read it.
"What is this?" She asked, thrusting the paper at me.
"A ticket to a fashion show."
"But you don't like fashion."
"I know."
"So where is the gift part of this?"
I sighed and took the invitation from her hands. "I'm going to support him and be a nice person, Pea."
"I'm sorry. Let me rephrase the question. Where's the gift that isn't about him? Because that is a gift to Kane from Kane."
Pia wasn't exactly buddies with Kane because the first time they met he called her a boy in public and told her to go with the younger children. Since then, her dislike for him had only gotten stronger.
"At least there's an after party," I said weakly. She folded her arms and her eyes turned amber for a few seconds. Gasping, she clamped her hand on her mouth. "What is it, Pia?"
She shook her head and grinned. "There's going to be a sale tomorrow!"
I stared at her. I thought there was something bad but it was just Pia being Pia. However, I could tell she wasn't telling me everything.
"And what else?"
Her mood switched instantly. She began bitting her lip and looked down.
"Ryan's gonna call soon," she muttered. My eyes widened in surprise.
"Oh."
"Yeah, but it'll be fine, right? Like we're fine. Maybe he just wants to talk or give me a gift... That's probably it. A gift with ribbons and sh*t..." Pia continued rambling until I hit her on the shoulder. "Ow!"
"Shut up, please." She glared. "It'll be fine."
Her smile told me that she was hoping I would be right. It was strange that the person who couldn't see the future was comforting the person who could. I patted her shoulder on my way out of the room, leaving her with her thoughts.
I immediately walked into Kane who was busy typing on his phone. He slid it in his pocket when he saw me.
"I'm so happy that you're coming to the show," he said sounding like he really meant it.
I gave him a small grin. "Welcome. Maybe one day you might be on the cover of Rouge."
"Vogue," he corrected. "And I hope so. Imagine all the clothes, the fame..." He trailed off, lost in a world where he was successful.
"Well, I hope I'll be there with you," I said jokingly.
Kane's face turned serious. "Of course you will. It's gonna be me and you, princess."
My breathing stopped for a second until I remembered to exhale. I shook my head, trying to rid my mind of the memories I had blocked.
"Yeah. Me and you."
