It All Starts Somewhere

A/N: I actually based this off of one of Mr. Incredible's drawings that is on the wall of his den <3

"Help! Oh please, somebody HELP!"

Ten-year-old Buddy Pine screamed out in desperation, his raspy voice mingling in with the rest of his classmates, the tones of their cries for help sounding just as dire. Nobody on the Gillette Elementary school bus had expected the field trip to the local zoo to take such an ugly turn. Literally. For whatever reason, the bridge across the Municiberg bay had chosen that very moment to collapse on itself, the road crumbling unsteadily beneath the weight of the vehicles already on it, its pieces falling into the waters below. Drivers who had noticed what was going on were quick enough to speed up in their driving or slam the brakes to reverse. But the bus, with its large, bulky cargo on the road was not able to make as swift of an escape. The driver had acted as fast as she could in trying to stop the vehicle, but its momentum still carried it forward, causing it to teeter precariously upon the edge of the wide gap that had formed. The children on board naturally panicked, unsure of what to do or how to avoid the inevitable catastrophe. At first, Buddy and the others had been eager to see the new tiger that was at the zoo, but now all the boy and his classmates were eager for was getting off the bus and onto the hard, sturdy ground once more – a stark contrast to the ever-faltering road that they were stuck on.

More screams sounded as the foundations crumbled even more, the bus leaning further into the gap rather than away from it, much to their horror. But, even more hair-raising to Buddy than the terrified sound of his friends and fellow peers, was the ominous creeeeak that indicated that the vehicle's collapse would be imminent any second. Any second now he and the others doomed to fall victim to this awful disaster were going to plummet into a sea of unforgiving water, horribly destined to suffer brutal injuries, or even worse, face death at such a ripe young age.

Buddy paled. This couldn't be the end, could it? There was still so much he wanted to do and accomplish. But, as the bus loomed down and down, he came to the horrible realization that he may just have to accept his fate, whether he liked it or not. But, so long as he was still alive...

"HELP! Somebody, help!"

It was worth a shot to cling onto that sole shred of hope that somebody, anybody would be able to assist them in their dire situation. But who? Only someone with unhuman strength could lug the vehicle back to the safety. But surely no one like that existed, right?

Buddy would get his answer soon enough.

As the boy and his comraderies began to plummet down off the bridge in a nightmare scene, a chorus of crying and screams following suit, the bus lurched to a sudden, unprecedented stop midair. Children aboard, once banging upon the windows or covering their heads in preparation for the cold plunge underwater collectively gasped, sitting up as best they could and peering out with caution. Sure enough, the terrible fall had been halted, and the bus now seemed to be hanging from the side of the bridge. Then, just as suddenly, a booming, confident voice rang out from the outside.

"Not to worry, kids. The help you want is on the way!"

The next moment, Buddy could feel the bus moving again – back in the direction of what was left of the bridge! It knocked about a couple of times, the boy clinging onto one of the seats as it did so to avoid being tossed, but soon enough it was hauled back up and over, and brought a safe distance away from the gaping hole. The children instantly went into a frenzy of relieved cheering. Buddy couldn't help but join in too, peeking out of the window and startled to see how the bus was levitated high up from the ground. People who had gathered around were pointing excitedly at someone whom he couldn't see beneath the bus, but was only visible from their long, large shadow they were casting on the ground.

"Oh my gosh!" a woman said excitedly. "Is that...?"

A man who'd run up next to her confirmed with an excited nod of his head. "It is! It is!"

The woman shrieked happily, bouncing upon her feet with excitement.

"As you can see, my friends, the situation is under control!" the same voice that rang out before in confidence called out. The bus was placed back down on the road a moment later, and the kids inside all clambered to the door, eager to dismount. The driver let out a nervous chuckle, not having quite mentally recovered from what had just occurred, and pulled the lever that allowed the doors to open. The children ran out in awe, finally seeing their savior standing a few paces away and running to surround him. At the back of the bus, Buddy had been unable to reach the exit as quickly as his fellow peers, much to his dismay. Of course he wanted to see who had helped them out in such a vital, heart-stopping situation!

With some difficulty, he managed to elbow his way to the front of the crowd of kids who had surrounded the individual, and Buddy gawked when he got a good glimpse. It was a tall man, towering over everyone else, donned in an outfit of red, black, and blue and with a mask covering his eyes. The boy gasped. A superhero?! Buddy couldn't believe it as he timidly approached, a shyness and awe overtaking him at the same time.

"Whoa," he breathed, gaping up at the powerful Super before him. "Who are you?"

"Who am I?" the Super echoed, his tone baffled as though he were quite surprised that this kid could not possibly know who he was. He stood up straighter, fixing the golden curl on his head, puffing out his built chest and striking a pose with his arm flexed to show the rippling muscle underneath. "Mr. Incredible, at your service, young man."

Buddy's eyes lit up, dilating full of admiration. Mr. Incredible. It was such a fitting name. The feat he'd pulled off had been nothing short of incredible! Unable to help himself, the redheaded boy lunged at the Super, wrapping his arms around his slim waist in a tight hug.

His teacher gasped. "Buddy!"

"It's quite all right, ma'am," Mr. Incredible assured with a chuckle. He gave the boy a couple of pats on the back in return.

Buddy looked up at him with a wide grin. "You really are incredible!" he exclaimed.

"Why, yes, I do believe that's why I chose it as my Super name," the man replied, an egotistical smirk crossing his face. Buddy did not notice, however. He was too exhilarated, staring up at him with his own huge grin and starry eyes.

The sound of police sirens tore the boy's gaze away for a moment as officers finally had made their way to the scene on both sides of the now broken bridge. Mr. Incredible nodded thoughtfully, giving them a brief salute as greeting.

"Well, looks like my work here is done for now," he said. "The cops will take it from here." He began to walk back towards a sleek, fancy car designed at the top with the same "I" shape that his super suit had, when he was grabbed by the arm.

"W-wait!" Buddy stammered. "You're leaving?"

Mr. Incredible nodded. "Well, yeah! As much as I'd love for it to, crime doesn't exactly stop itself, kiddo."

Buddy worried. He couldn't leave yet! "Please, wait!" he cried. "I, uh... here!" Scrambling in his pockets, he managed to produce a crumpled scrap of paper and a chewed pencil. Buddy looked up at Mr. Incredible hopefully. "Could I have your autograph?"

The Super peered down at Buddy, and then smiled broadly. "Why, of course!" He scribbled his signature onto the paper and handed it back to the beaming boy. "And there's plenty more where that came from," he joked before hopping into the car.

Buddy gazed at the signature, running his fingers over it in astonishment. He waved at Mr. Incredible wildly as he drove off. "BYE!"

The Super rolled down his window, winking at Buddy and the rest of the school kids before he hit the turbo button on his dashboard, igniting the afterburners of his car and speeding off.

And it was right there, plastered with a grin on his face that remained there for the rest of that day, that Buddy Pine pocketed the first of his many autographed papers from the who would become his most favorite fearless hero. The Super who became his idol, whom Buddy dreamed of becoming his ward so that way he could be by his side all the time and be a part of helping him accomplish many more outstanding services... kind of like that one bat guy from his favorite show on TV with his sidekick. But until that happened, the boy promised himself to loyally remain Mr. Incredible's number one fan.
