Chapter: 8

I don't know what time it is, but I wake up to the ringing of my phone. Turning to Adam, I find him squinting his eyes to check the time on the digital clock placed on his bedside table.

Stretching my arm, I grab my phone while sitting up, my eyes widen in alert as Abigail's name appears on the screen.

"Who is it?" Adam instantly sits up and asks, studying my expression.

"Abigail," I reply at the same time I answer the phone.

Abigail's name even alerted him, as she is calling me at three in the morning.

"Hey," I whisper, "What happened?" I softly ask her.

"I hear their voices," After a moment or two, she speaks sounding scared.

"They are not there, baby girl." I keep my voice soft as tears gather in my eyes, "You are safe, you are home."

That traumatizing incident has left a deep mark on Abigail's mind. Sometimes all those horrible memories resurface, making her vulnerable.

She promised me whenever she will feel scared or those horrid memories will invade her mind, she will talk to me. She needs to share her pain, otherwise, it will slowly eat her from inside.

"Where are mom and dad?" I ask her, getting up from the bed.

"They are not at home, they will return after two days." Her voice thick with crying.

"I am sorry, that I have disturbed you." She sniffles, "But I don't know what to do."

"Hey... I am your sister you can call me anytime. You can never disturb me." I wipe my eyes, "Don't worry... I am here."

"Do you want me to come to you?" I ask already looking for my keys because there is no way I can leave her alone at this time.

She needs me and I am going to be there for her. That's what elder siblings are supposed to do, be there for their younger siblings when they need them.

"It is too late, you can't come now." She takes a deep breath, then after a pause, she speaks, "I am fine, now. After talking to you, I am feeling better." Her voice sound composed, but I know her when she pretends to be strong but in reality, she is shaken up from inside.

"Yeah, okay." I roll my eyes at her if she thinks anything can stop me from coming to her, "Now relax and close your eyes, and plug in your headphones and listen to Taylor Swift songs." I make a joke, to divert her mind which works as I hear her weak chuckle.

"Love you, Abby." I end up the call after I listen to her calm breaths and the sound of television running in the background.

Adam places a hand on my shoulder, taking a deep breath I turn to him to find him already dressed up as he looks at me expectedly.

"Quickly get dressed, we are going to your parents' house." He smiles at me, his smile is not as bright as normally it is, his eyes hold worry and concern for Abigail, "I think Abigail needs you and I will not be able to rest when I know she is scared of something and we are not there for her."

Tears slip from my eyes and wrapping my arms around him I cry loudly. I hate to see her in pain, my blood boils in anger when I think about what she has gone through or what could have happened with her if dad hadn't rescued her in time.

Adam doesn't question me anything he just lets me cry. After I have let out my anger and pain in the form of tears, leaning away I wipe my face with the sleeve of my shirt.

"Feeling better now?" He holds my face and looks into my eyes, "Now let's give Abigail a surprise visit." He gently places a kiss on my forehead as he gives me a small smile.

Swallowing the lump which has formed in my throat as different emotions seize my heart as I gaze into his eyes, I gently nod my head.

"Last year..." I intertwine my fingers in my lap and stare at them as I speak, "Last year..." I again repeat, but I am not able to form words as my heart aches even thinking about that night.

Momentarily, looking away from the empty road, Adam places his hand on mine interlocked fingers and give it a light squeeze.

"Hannah, you don't have to tell me anything." He shakes his head, "I don't want to know what had happened with Abigail, I simply know that Abigail needs us. That's it."

His words give me the courage to tell him something which no one knows outside our family. He is a family.

"Abigail was sixteen years old when one of her friends tricked her to a party lying that Natalie is in danger." Taking a deep breath, I slowly exhale while getting a hold of myself, "She trusted him and went with him." I clench my hands together in anger thinking about how that bastard broke my sister's trust.

"There he drugged her then later he and his friend tried to take advantage of my sister." My voice cracks, no matter how much I try to compose my emotions.

Adam's face hardens and lips pressed into a thin line. This is the first time I have seen him angry.

"Did they?" He clenches his jaw, radiating off of him.

"No, thankfully, dad and uncle Michael reached there with the police and rescued Abigail." I sigh, shaking my head, "But that incident has shaken up from inside. Sometimes her mind takes her back to relive those painful memories but she never shows her pain to anyone. My baby girl is strong." Wiping the tears which leak down my eyes, I smile proudly.

"Even strong people need someone else to be strong for them." He looks at me as we are almost near my house, "And we all are going to be there for her, to lend her our strength whenever she will need it."

*****************************************************************************

When I enter the house, I hear faint sound of the television coming from Abigail's room, with the spare keys of mine. Reaching Abigail's room door, I take a moment to prepare myself to enter as she doesn't need a sister who is emotionally weak.

Knocking on the door lightly, I push the door open to find Abigail curled up on the bed trying to make herself as small as possible while some documentary about pyramids is playing on the television.

She raises her head when she watches me. Surprise and relief flicker over her tears stricken face, as I sit beside her on the bed.

As soon as I caress her face, she throws her arms around me and holds me tightly while hiding her face in my neck.

The strength with which she is holding me is enough to tell how much she needed me now. Holding her, I smooth her hair while stroking her back as I gently rock her. Just the way, I used to do when she was a small baby.

My small arms were not big enough to hold her on my own, but my heart was big enough to keep her protected in it.

"You are here," she whispers against my shoulder, the relief in her voice brings tears to my eyes.

"Yes, I am," rubbing her back, I softly speak to her.

After a while, she pulls back, as I can see some of the brightness of her eyes has returned.

"Would you mind if I also join you in this sleepover?" Adam smiles at us and stands near the door holding a tray.

"Adam." Abigail looks at me, then to him with a smile, hiding all the remnants of her emotions.

Like always, hiding everything behind her pretty smile.

The look which Adam gives me is enough to tell even he can see through her smile.

"I thought to make some hot chocolate for my favorite Prescott." He lightly chuckles walking inside the room.

"Thank you." Abigail smiles taking the mug and this time her smile seems more genuine than before.

After handing me, my mug Adam sits at the edge of the bed. I notice he is being cautious of his action around Abigail, not to make her uneasy.

"Are you both going to stay here?" Abigail asks with a hopeful tone.

Before I can answer, Adam replies to her.

"Yes, for tonight we are staying here." He smiles, then after a pause, he adds, "But tomorrow you are coming with us, to our home."

"I have already planned we are going to go out and have fun." He says excitedly, trying to cheer Abigail, which works as I notice the excitement in her eyes.

"Okay, so should we plan a picnic for tomorrow?" I ask, looking at Abigail. "Or should we go skating?" I raise my eyebrows knowing this is something she would love to do.

"First we are going to have a picnic then later we are going skating." She smiles widely, holding my hand as she looks at Adam expectantly.

"Whatever you say." Adam smiles and ruffles her head.

"Thank you." She smiles and surprising us she gives Adam a small hug.

This small gesture of her shows she trusts Adam which immediately makes me happy. I haven't realized how much this means to me until now.

The smile on Adam's face also makes it evident that even this means a lot to him.

He gently hugs her back as a protective glint is visible in his eyes, the same protectiveness that I feel for her.
