Sabine's P.O.V
"Earth to Sabine Wren. I repeat, Earth to Sabine Wren. Do you copy?"
I blinked a couple of times to see Ketsu cupping her hands around her mouth. I rubbed my eyes and sat up. I must of fallen asleep.
"Yeah?" I asked.
Ketsu dropped her hands from her mouth and said, "You're getting off next."
"Thanks for waking me up," I responded.
"Hey," she began, punching my shoulder lightly, "What are friends for?"
"Getting me into trouble," I answered.
"Yep," she agreed. I rolled my eyes while gathering my things. The bus stopped and Ketsu slipped out of the seat to let me slide out.
"Bye," I said to Ketsu. She responded with a 'bye' as I exited the bus. The doors closed and the bus drove off.
I walked off to the front door of my house and entered. Chopper laid in the corner of the living room, snoozing in his makeshift bed made from a big basket's bottom and cushioned with old blankets.
"Mom! I'm home!" I called, accidentally waking up Chopper.
"Sorry," I apologized. Chopper growled a bit but probably thought I was just a waste of time before going back to sleep. I walked into the kitchen where mom would usually be. The kitchen was empty. I spotted a note laying on the top of the kitchen counter.
It read:
Be back in a little bit. Get your homework done and as soon as I get home, we're going out.
~Mom~
I threw the note away and immediately got started on my homework. I pulled out the geometry worksheet and sighed in annoyance.
This should be fun.
Ezra's P.O.V
"I'm home!" I called out and walked into the living room to find it...clean? Again? The air smelled good as well and dad wasn't sulking on the couch. In fact, he was in the kitchen washing dishes. I set my bag down and stared at him in confusion.
He looked up and smiled.
"Hey, Ezra. How was school?" He asked. I was completely speechless from the shock of seeing dad acting like this. Not that it was a bad thing but it's just really...amazing.
"Um...fine," I answered, weirded out.
"Good," He quipped, "How about you do your homework and later we're going out." I nodded slowly before walking off to my room and watching dad carefully as though not believing what I saw was true.
Everyday when coming home, dad would make it so the whole living room was dark. He would sulk on the couch with beer bottles laying out all over the floor. Sometimes, I would come home to see him crying, yelling, or just muttering to himself in a slurred tone.
Yet, lately that has changed over the passed month. I wasn't sure what happened to make him stop that habit but was very happy to see him improving. See him change over the years. See him at peace with himself. Relief swelled in my chest at the very thought.
I walked into my bedroom and laid on the bed, starting to do my homework. The English homework really stumped me and decided to wait until tomorrow for some help on it.
There was a knock on my door about an hour and a half later.
"Ezra, get ready. We'll be leaving soon," Dad informed from the other side. Footsteps retreated from the door when he left. I stood up and stretched my arms before heading out of the room.
Dad was waiting for me at the front door. I slid my shoes on and followed him to the car.
"When do I get a chance to drive?" I asked.
"When your old enough," I answered.
"When will that be?" I asked, getting into the car.
"When your older than me," he joked, strapping in and starting the vehicle. I rolled my eyes and buckled in as he pulled out of the driveway.
"You never told me where we were going," I said.
"It's a surprise," he replied. I huffed a 'fine' and watched people and buildings pass by. I wondered the whole time what the surprise may be.
Sabine's P.O.V
"So, where are we going?" I asked, buckling up.
"Jho's bar," mom answered, backing out of the driveway.
"Oh, man. It's been so long since I seen Jho," I said, enthusiastically. I was almost to the point where I was jumping in my seat. Mom smirked a little as she drove down the road.
After ten minutes, we arrived at the small bar, Old Jho's. I hurried to unbuckle myself. Mom looked at me with amusement.
"Someone's in a hurry," she said, with a raised eyebrow. I held back an eye roll and soon was out of the car. We walked into the building to see it was a little packed but it usually was on Fridays. We went and sat in a booth on one side.
"I'm going to see, Jho," I said getting up. I walked over to the counter and sat on a stool. Jho was a little ways down giving a man a beer. He skimmed the counter until his dark and warm eyes landed on me. Jho was a short, old man and was always seen with a cheery smile on his face.
He walked over to me with a bright smile.
"Do my eyes deceive me or have you grown more since the last time I've seen you?" Jho said. I laughed a little and returned the smile.
"I may have grown just a little," I replied. Jho laughed but had to shortly go to take another order. I soon stood up and walked to the bathroom.
Ezra's P.O.V
"I want you to be on you best behavior," dad said seriously after parking the car.
"Okay," I promised and climbed out. My eyes landed on the small bar a couple yards away that read Old Jho's. Concern began to swirl in my stomach and skin prickled with a cold. A bar. Out of all places, it had to be a bar.
Memories of dad coming home drunk came to mind. Reminding me of all the yelling, sobbing, and occasional hitting. Deep in my heart, I knew he didn't mean any of that but hearing or feeling it still hurt. It hurt a lot. Later, when his head was clear, he would apologize and try to make it up to me.
I flinched at the touch of a hand on my shoulder and jumped back in fear. My fear-filled eyes quickly averted to see dad with a concerned look in his eyes. He immediately knew what was wrong and gently laid both hands on my shoulders.
"Ezra, I'm not like that anymore," dad paused and shakily sighed, "I know our past wasn't the best but I'm trying to change that by stopping it for good." He referred 'it' to his drinking problem. I honestly wasn't sure why I was still jumpy. Old habits die hard, I guess.
I nodded and calmed down, still feeling a little restless. Dad pulled me into his side and kept one arm around my shoulder. I leaned into the warmth and smiled a bit as we walked closer to the bar. I was still weary about going in.
As if reading my mind, dad said reassuringly, "I promise that I will only drink water the whole time we're here. Okay?"
I mumbled a quiet 'okay' and felt a little better. Dad never went back on his promises. Never. It didn't completely stop me from getting worried but eased it.
We entered the small bar and I followed dad over to a booth. That was until I suddenly had to use the bathroom.
"I'm going to the restroom," I told him. He nodded and I walked towards the bathrooms in the back.
After I was done, I walked out and wasn't paying attention when someone walked out of the girl's bathroom. We bumped into each other and stumbled a bit. I caught my balance and so did the other person.
"Sorry," we said in sync. I looked up a bit weirded out until changing into full-on shock. My eyes widen when recognizing the person I bumped into.
"Nerd?" I said, gaping like a fish in surprise.
"Jarrus?" She replied, just as shocked.
We snapped out of our mini stare down which turned into pure confusion.
"What are you doing here?" We said in sync again, pointing at each other. I rolled my eyes and sighed in annoyance.
