Chapter 13

Sabine's P.O.V

"You're what?" I finally said, after what left like ten minutes. Ketsu looked away in shame after telling me her secret. How could she not tell me? We've been best friends for so long! Why wouldn't she tell me something like this?

"You know I don't like repeating myself, Syndulla," She muttered, still not looking me in the eye.

"Why didn't you tell me?" I asked, a bit upset.

"I thought you would abandon me if I told you. I've started getting cyber bullied a little but it's been some time since I last checked anything on my phone," She explained. I sighed, understanding the situation a bit better before nodding.

"I wouldn't, in a million years, abandon you. You're my best friend. We have each other's back no matter what," I said, punching her arm a little. Ketsu smiled happily in relief and I felt a weight on my shoulder lighten a bit.

"There's also something else you should know," she added, "Some people began saying that...well...we're dating."

I cringed a bit knowing that it was far from the truth. Ketsu was like my long lost sister. Sure we hangout a lot, but that's just because we get along so well. It's nobodies business whether she is straight or not. I support her either way and will not let actual true rumors get in the way of that.

"We'll figure something out," I promised.

Ketsu nodded before asking, "So...how was the walking and talking blueberry for you?"

I cringed at the memory of that horrible day. Why does my life turn into a knot of problems every time Jarrus is around? First, him acting innocent, then that horrible plan, and lastly, the shooting. I still get nightmares from that day.

"Not the best," she said. I nodded as we began walking down the hallway. There was so much I wanted to tell her happening in my crazy life. So much that I want to let off my chest but I couldn't give her all my problems to deal with when she already has her own.

We walked around in silence until the bell rang. Students rushed out of the lunchroom like ants crawling from their home in a hurry. Ketsu and I split ways as I headed towards my next class, having less weight and problem from my shoulders. She was going to be okay but I'm going to have to find the idiot who found out her secret.

Ketsu was really good a keeping secrets and she didn't talk with many people other than Wedge and I. So...who could have spoiled the secret like that online?

After returning home, I was greeted with the last face I wanted to see. Jarrus. He and mom were on the couch doing his homework. Mom looked up at me and smiled.

"Hey, Sabine. You want to join us?" She asked. I returned the smile and shook my head "no."

"I'm going to do it in my room. Call me down when supper is ready," I said, before bolting to my room and trying not to look suspicious. At the moment, I wanted to be alone for once and distract myself from everything.

It took about an hour and a half before finishing my homework because I kept dazing in and out of my mind. I was a tired wreck and almost fell asleep when someone knocked at the door.

"Come in," I yawned and turned to see Jarrus open the door and walk in. I honestly thought he left and assumed it was mom at the door. Peachy.

"What?" I asked, annoyed they he was still here and not talking faster. He narrowed his eyes at me and shut the door.

"I've got another plan to break them up, grouch," Ezra spoke, quietly and rolled his eyes. Great, just what I want to hear, another failure waiting to happen.

"Ezra..." I sighed, trailing off before turning my chair to face him.

"I don't think I can do this to my mom even if I don't like what comes with it."

"So, what you're saying is that you are a chicken. The nerdy chicken," Ezra said, smirking and crossing his arms. I narrowed my eyes at him for this childish behavior and trying to convince me to do something horrible. Was it bad to say...that it was slightly working?

An inner turmoil began to surface as I stared at that snobby, hittable with a chair on fire, childish face of his. I stood up, making my decision and followed the satisfied jerk out the door.

"So, what's this genius plan of yours this time?" I asked, sarcastically annoyed. Ezra raised an eyebrow my way but shrugged it off before explaining the plan.

*1 month later*

I can safely say that Ezra has the worst plans in the history of plans. My mom and I were over at the Jarrus's house for dinner. I kept staring at a picture every once in a while of Ezra and Kanan which bothered me for some reason.

Ezra has another brilliant idea for plan...I don't even care anymore. I picked at my food before feeling a light nudge from under the table.

My eyes lifted up to see Ezra gesturing at the hall. I sighed and we excused ourselves from the table. I was not in the mood for whatever Ezra had planned this time but hopefully we can get this over with.

I paused once we arrived at a room. Ezra opened the door then walked in and I followed. My eyes scanned my new surroundings of a nice looking room and immediately knew this was not Ezra's.

"Okay, Jarrus. I'm going to put this as simple as possible so you better listen cause I'm going to say it only once," I said, irritated and pitching the bridge of my nose. Ezra was looking around the room until he paused and waited for me to speak again.

"One: why are we in Kanan's room? Two: what is your one in a million failure of a plan?" I asked, looking straight at him.

"One and two: The plan is to find something that will betray your mother's trust for my father. There has to be something in here," he said, scoping the room. Rolling my eyes, I helped him search the room (except the dresser). It looked like normal things that didn't look to any use for us.

That's when I noticed picture of Ezra as a toddler and Kanan holding him at the park.

"Hey...Ezra. This is probably none of my business but what happened to your mother?" I asked, feeling slightly guilty for asking such a personal question. The teen pulled a box out from under the bed.

"I don't know. Dad never told me or avoided the subject," he answered. I walked over and looked over his shoulder.

"What's in the box?" I asked, quickly changing the subject. I never liked talking about my family history so there was no need to know his. We've actually grown closer in the past month. We've come so far since the first day we met.

"I don't know but we're about to find out," he said, a sly grin plastering his face. He took the lid off to reveal some papers and newspapers. I grabbed a newspaper before noticing the date. I looked at the pictures and read the title of the article.

"Building burned to the floor. Freak accident by group called the Empire," I read, quietly. Confused by the newspaper, I looked over at Ezra to see if he found anything. My eyes widen slightly when seeing his pale face and noticed his fingers gripping the paper, crinkling it.

   "Ezra..." I said, worried.

"No," he spoke under his breath before letting the paper go. Ezra placed his head in his hands, body shaking. I was surprised and very concerned for my friend. My hand grabbed the paper Ezra held and I began to read it.

   A gasp escaped my lips.

   These were Ezra's adoption papers.

The next thing that happened, a blur of orange raced out of the room. I quickly stood up and followed.
