¬¬¬¬¬

We were done with exams, finally!!

We'd be going home soon, I just couldn't wait to go see my annoying brothers.

"let's go to a club to celebrate the end of our first year in the university " Aisha suggested.

We all agreed but started reconsidering because of Rona and Anu.

" what would you like us to do instead? " Debra asked Rona.

Aisha frowned " no no, don't ask her, she'd say something boring, why don't we just go swimming, shopping or whatever for a whole day? "

Laughing, Anu answered " you and shopping are like sisters "

" so what do you say? " Aisha rolled her eyes.

" that's a waste of money, I have something better instead " Rona grinned.

We sighed in frustration.
" Okay, what? " I asked.

"can we go to the orphanage?" she smiled.

Nobody said anything for some seconds.

"please " she added.

Debra and I turned to Aisha, if Aisha says 'no', then it's final.

she hit her forehead "I was right when I said you'd think of something boring.... No problem then, to the orphanage it is"

Her tone was dry.

Some days later, the girls and I got somebody to help us buy some bags of rice, clothes, toys and some other things to give to the children.

Aisha chose to go to one of the big well constructed orphanage around but Rona disagreed.

"what's your problem, weren't you the one that chose to go to an orphanage in the first place? " Aisha was upset.

" this particular one you want us to go to, the children there have no problem, in fact, they practically have everything they need.... Instead of going there, we can go to another one entirely, it's owned by the government and not much have been done to help the children there " Her voice was sad.

Again, Debra and I turned to face Aisha, reluctantly, she agreed.

We were taking the things we had earlier bought from our room to Aisha's car when Emeka and Timi showed up.
I told them where we'd be going today and I didn't expect they'd show up.

"oh God, who asked you guys to come? " Aisha cried

We were downstairs by the car.

" Hey baby " Timi smiled as he wrapped his hand around my waist.
I smiled back at him placing a light kiss on his lip and at the same time waving at Emeka.

" since nobody wants to say hi to me .... Good afternoon everybody... And Rona " Emeka smiled.

Rona mumbled some few words before running upstairs either to get the other things or to avoid him.

" I didn't expect you'd come " I tell Timi.

" I'll assume Benny told her boyfriend about today and you people na decided to come and why on Earth would you guys wear an agbada to an orphanage " Aisha sighed.

Yeah, they were both on this blue 'agbadas' looking as fresh as ever.

Timi explained " no we didn't wear it to go with you guys, we are actually going to a colleague's wedding, we just came to drop some few things "

" you both look silly " Aisha rolled her eyes. It seems she had her monthly visitor because she was always with the attitude whenever she's on it.

" what things? " Debra asked Timi. Before he could answer, she walked over to their car, looked in it.

" A fine big bag, a carton of indomie, some other fine bags and ohh, a bag of rice " she called out.

We turned to the guys to give an explanation.

" Benny told me where you guys had planned on going, I told Emeka and since it was obvious that Rona was behind the whole thing, he decided we should get things to drop for you girls " Timi explained again.

"awwn" Aisha squealed.

Just then Rona came downstairs struggling with some bags.

"here, let me help you with that " Emeka offered as he effortlessly collected the bags from her and helped put it in Aisha's car.

" madam Rona, Emeka and Timi brought some things for us to take along " Debra told her.

Timi smirked pointing at his friend "it was mostly his idea"

Rona mumbled a " Thank you " before going to stand behind Aisha. I could see Aisha holding her hand and smiling at her.

" is that all? " Debra asked.

Anu came downstairs with more bags than Rona. Our eyes turned to Emeka to see if he'd help her collect the bags but he turned his face to the other side.
Aisha frowned at him as she helped Anu with the bags.

" is that all? " Debra asked again.

" yes" Anu answered.

"okay then, since you guys are done, we'll be on our way" Timi smiled at me.
" be a good girl, don't talk to any guy out there, if he tries talking to you, what would you do? "

" act like a deaf and dumb person " I gave him the answer he had always told me to give him whenever he asked the question.

" you guys are something else " Aisha laughed as she got into her car.

" bye " Debra shouted as she also got in.

As Anu and I got into the car, I could hear Emeka softly talking to Rona.

" I'll come to pick you for tomorrow's service "

Rona looked frightened, she nodded and hurriedly entered the car.

The orphanage was quite a distance, Aisha and Debra took turn in driving.
After about 2 hours 30 minutes drive, all thanks to Lagos traffic, we got to our destination.

It was an ugly old tall building.

Out of habit, I turned to look at Aisha to see if she'd twist her face in disgust... She didn't disappoint.

We entered its compound and Rona led us to see the people in charge, it was this lady that would probably be in her mid fifties.
She was very nice to us and openly told us it was so surprising to see young girls coming to give things to the orphans.

Entering the main building, I was almost moved to tears, there were lots of poorly fed, malnourished children.

The woman; Mrs Akintola, explained that sometimes, they are not able to get enough funds from the government and again, more children are always dumped beside the building, leaving the home to take care of them.

"we have up to 200 children here " she informed us.
True to her words, it was more like a market place as many children ranging from 3 to probably 18/19 roamed around.

" once they turn 21, we give them freedom to leave the home and fend for themselves " she explained to us.

We told her about the things we brought and she ordered some of the big boys to go and get them from the car.

She introduced us to some of the staff and told us to feel free around.
After she left us to attend to some business, we got ourselves busy.

There was this little boy who was sitting on the floor, seriously reading a book, I walked over to him, he looked up at me and gave me a big smile.

AISHA'S POV

All the girls had left me as I was standing alone.

A little girl waved at me. I looked around to confirm if she was actually waving at me. I realised I was the one.

She came over to meet me and was smiling like she had won something.
I wasn't really cool with little kids, the only one I could manage was Benny's brother Tife, besides this girl here looks much younger than Tife.
Funny but little children terrified me probably because I was the last child of the family.

"Hello " she smiled again

" Hello, how are you? " I managed to ask.

" I'm fine, thank you ".

I smiled back at her.

" aunty, I love your dress " she tells me.

Oh my God, you don't mean to tell me this young girl knows fashion when she sees it, Benny and co couldn't even compliment my new dress but this young girl just did.

" Thank you " I smiled stretching my hand to her. I was the type that strongly avoided physical contact but I'll just forget that for now.

Her hand in mine, I quickly searched for a chair, I walked over to sit.
" so tell me, what's your name and how old are you "

" my name is Angela and I'm 9 years old " she smartly tells me.

" that's a sweet name, you like my dress? " I don't know why but I wanted to confirm again.

She nodded.

" don't worry, I'll get you one " I was serious.
" tell me, what do you want to become when you get older "

She looked shy and shyly informed me " I want to become a model "

Ohh, no wonder she loves my outfit.

I carried her on my lap ignoring her heavy weight.

" I have a friend who used to be a model too " I smiled at her.

" who? "

I looked up and then pointed at Benny who was seated on the floor talking with this little boy.

" you said she used to be a model? That means she's no longer a model? " she asked.
Such a smart kid.

I nodded at her.

With this girl on my laps, I wondered how it felt not not to have experienced motherly love.
All Rona's teaching came to my head, bits by bits. One had to be thankful of the little thing one has.
Instead of spending my money on unnecessary things, I'd take it upon myself to give funds to this particular home.

" why? " Angela jerked me out of my thought.

" why what? "

" you said she's no longer a model? "

" oh yeah, well, she wanted to focus on school " which was a big lie. Benny just got lazy and at a point, she totally forgot she used to model.

" is she your friend? " Angela asked me. I looked up at Debra who was playing ball with some kids outside.

" not her, this one " she pointed at Rona.

" ohh, yes, she is my friend.... My best friend actually, they are all my best friends " because they truly were, after all.

BENNY'S POV

That night we went clubbing, well Anu and Rona didn't come with us.

We had lots of fun drinking and dancing and just basically having fun.

We all got wasted.
I was seeing stars, Aisha kept on falling down and Debra told us she was flying.

Trying to remember it all, the memory was like fogged. Though I remember a kind man helped us, he asked for Debra's phone and asked who he should call for help, Debra managed to mention Rona.

I remember the man speaking on phone to 'Rona' but his lips were just moving, he wasn't making any sound and I kept on wondering how Rona would hear him.

I don't know how long it took but Rona and Anu came to get us.

I remember Rona complaining, angrily scolding us, reminding us that she had asked us not to drink.

I remember her asking people to help her get us into the car.

I remember Rona pulling my ear when I vomited in the car.

I remember Rona shouting at Anu telling her to slow down and not kill us.
And I as well remember Anu shouting back that she wasn't really perfect in driving that she had just gotten few basic tips, nothing much.

I remember Rona cleaning me up.

I remember closing my eyes on the bed.

**************

The next day, after the normal hangover, we started packing our things to go home while Rona and Anu went to church since it was a Sunday.

Rona surprisingly did not force us to come to church with her, the hangover was killing.

"why don't we go to Anu's place since your house isn't that far from here.... I don't want to go home yet" Debra suggested after the girls came back from church and joined us in packing.

We already made up our mind not to stay in hostel in our second year.
Though Anu and Rona were both in their second year already.

We agreed moving our things to Anu's place. She let us understand that her parents would be more than happy to receive us.

We successfully packed all our things, driving the two cars there. I already informed Timi about it.

Truly, Anu's parents were really accommodating and Anu had 3 cute younger siblings running around the house.

I felt a little bit disturbed that Anu's parents would probably complain of accommodating 4 girls, but they didn't.

We all stayed in Anu's room and it seemed Anu's parent knew Rona because she was so free with them. We stayed at her place for a week and finally decided to go back home.

Home was boring for all of us so we chose to spend our little holiday in one of my dad's apartment far from home.

So it was the three of us, Debra, Aisha and I.

This particular evening, Timi had stopped over to say hi.
He was helping Debra set up this art work when Fisayo called me.

I took a deep breath before picking, I was so sure it would be bad news because bad news usually come unexpected.

And Fisayo's call is unexpected.

He calmly told me "you should go and check Olivia, I regret it but she made me angry, my anger issues took the best of me and I'm sorry but I did something terrible to her "
