"I realized that I don't care why he did anything." -Adam Mathews, IASWAD.
CHAPTER TWENTY NINE: Confrontation
Zamzam Amin
I stared at him wide eyed, completely mortified of what I just did. I'm so clumsy like seriously I should get an award for the amount of times I've spilt something on someone by accident. I looked down at his shirt which was now completely smeared with chocolate ice cream. "I am so sorry." I apologized once again.
"It's fine, gotta love your clumsiness." He let out a half grin as he grabbed some tissues from the closest table. How could he be so cool about this? The dude literally looks like he has poop on his shirt! "Zamzam?" Isa looked at me with widened eyes. He then looked at Aliyah and Fatima who were staring at the situation in shock. "What're you guys doing here?"
"Getting food. What else?"
"Oh my gosh is that Isa? You're so big now!" Fatima gushed making Isa look embarrassed. I could tell because his cheeks turned a light shade of pink. "I'm not a baby Fatima. But it's nice to see you," He said, still looking embarrassed. "I'm going to wash this off." Adam said as he started walking towards the restroom. Dang it now I feel really bad. Why do I have to be so clumsy all the time?
I continued to walk to the girls restroom to wash my hands before I came back to order my food. By the time I did, Adam was already sitting where the rest of the guys were, still smiling and having a good time. I know at first I thought it was weird that Isa and Adam were friends but now I'm glad they are. I mean my brother has done more good for him than I have.
I guess I was staring at their table for too long because Aliyah kept on snapping her fingers in front of my face to catch my attention. "What?" I asked, grabbing my menu. "You shouldn't stare, Zam." She gave me the shame signal. Instead of replying, I called the waitress and we ordered our food.

"Here," I walked up to Adam's locker and brought out a book. He gave me a questioning look before he grabbed the book out of my hands. "This is the English Translation of the Quran." I looked at the book fondly. Words can't describe how much it means to me, that's why I'm giving it to him. "It was my Grandpa's, he gave it to me when I was little and now I want you to have it. I accidentally overheard you asking Isa questions about Islam so I want to help you if you're interested."
I felt a pang in my chest as I pictured my grandfather. I remember his smile, his contagious laughter and how he always gave the warmest of hugs. He gave me that copy of the Quran as a birthday present when I turned ten years old. Ever since then I've carried it around with me not only because it was my favourite copy of the Quran that I own, but it felt like I was carrying a bit of Gramps with me.
Adam didn't say anything for a good minute but I understood, he probably didn't know what to say much less how to say it. "I can't take this..." He tried to give it back to me reluctantly. "Why not?" I couldn't help but question. "It means too much to you. It was your Grandfathers! What if I lose it?" He ran a panicking hand through his hair. He does that a lot when he's nervous.
It's actually kind of cute. Again stop it with these thoughts Zamzam! You shouldn't be thinking like this! I'm seriously losing my mind. It's official. "In Shaa Allah you won't, okay." I stated reassuringly.
"Okay," He let out a sigh. "One question though."
"Shoot."
"W-What does that mean again?.." He asked as he rubbed the back of his neck with an embarrassed look on his face. I couldn't contain the smile that was making its way across my features. Aw, he's cute when he's embarrassed. "It means by God's will. Now, I have to go."
After that I went into the cafeteria in search of Aliyah.

I stared at the book in my hands for a good minute before reading it.
In the name of God, the infinitely Compassionate and Merciful.
Praise be to God, Lord of all the worlds.
The Compassionate, the Merciful. Ruler on the Day of Reckoning.
You alone do we worship, and You alone do we ask for help.
Guide us on the straight path,
the path of those who have received your grace;
not the path of those who have brought down wrath, nor of those who wander astray.
"What's that you're reading?" Mom looked over my shoulder. I quickly closed the book and set it behind me. "Nothing." I responded. She gave me a weird look then it was quickly taken over by a concerned one. "Listen." She sat beside me.
"What's going on?"
"Your father wants to see you and so does Avon. Actually they want to see you and Zamzam. I'm obviously against you going near them but you're old enough to make your own decisions. That's why I'm telling you this." I didn't know what to say. I haven't even thought about seeing them again. After what happened that day I was hoping to never hear their names let along see their faces.
But half of me just wanted to understand why. Why did Avon suck Isa and Zamzam into this mess? Why did my father start it in the first place? How could he not tell me that my arch nemesis was actually my half brother? How could Avon hate me enough to try to kill me? So many questions flowed through my mind yet I had no answer to them.
If I really want to find out why then I have to see them and so does Zamzam. By now, I would not that Zamzam isn't the kind of person to be okay with leaving things unresolved so she would want to come and end things. That's another trait of hers that I can't help but admire.
"I'll think about it." I responded as I walked into my room. I grabbed my phone and dialed Scarfy's number.
"Hey Adam. What going on?" She sounded a little surprised that I called.
"My mom just told me that Avon and my father want us to visit them. I don't know why but I kind of want to go." I explained.
"Really? If you're going then you can't come alone. I'll come with you, let's meet at the jail in an hour." She then hung up.
I grabbed my keys off of the night stand and headed out the door. "I guess you're going, I knew you would." Mom said with a knowing look on her face. "I'll see you when I get home." I shouted over my shoulder before getting inside my car and starting the engine.

I know I shouldn't be going but half of me wants answers. I'm sick and tired of wondering why so instead I want to figure it out so we could put this whole thing behind us. I also asked Isa to come with us so it wouldn't be just me and Adam. But something was weird about Isa, he didn't seem like himself. Something was definitely wrong with him today.
"Are you sure you're okay?" I asked for what seemed to be the one hundredth time but again he had on an emotionless expression. "I'm fine." He said as he kept his focus on the road ahead of us. I decided to let it go for now and just stare out the window. The warm air blew against my skin, I closed my eyes and let the feeling devour me. It's soothing.
Before I knew it Isa was parking the car in front of the jail. "Are you sure you want to do this?" He looked at me with concern.
"I don't know." I said as I let out a sigh.
"I'm here for you Zam."
"Thanks."
After we got out of the car Isa called Adam on his phone. I could see his car from where we were standing but I couldn't see him. He must be inside.
"Let's go." He said as he put his phone in his back pocket. I followed him inside and saw Adam standing near the gated entrance.

My whole entire body grew stiff as my eyes landed upon Alec Mathews. Even though there was a whole entire glass wall dividing us, I still felt scared. This was a bad idea. Why did I come? My hand shook as I grabbed the landline attached to the glass wall and placed it on my ear.
"You actually came."
"Why did you kidnap me?" I tried my best to sound brave.
"Like I said before you were just collateral damage. I wanted my son's attention and you were the way to get it. Speaking of him, where is he?" He looked passed me but to his disappointment Adam wasn't here. He wanted to speak with Avon first then come here. I felt a hand on my shoulder and when I looked up I saw Isa standing behind me.
"What? Now you have bodyguards?" Alec scoffed.
"I'm done here." I placed the landline back against the wall and got up.
"Adam's still talking to Avon."
"There's someone else I want to see."
I want to see Mahmoud.
Adam Mathews
"I bet you're really happy to see me like this." I couldn't help but nod at that statement. "It didn't have to be like this. Let me ask you one thing though. Why did you do it?" I leaned forward as I stared at him down through the glass. He scoffed at what I said as if it was the most ridiculous thing in the world.
"You're right, it didn't." He glared at me. "You were supposed to be dead and I was supposed to get away with it. Now, who's fault is that?" He added.
"You really hate me that much? Why?"
There was a sense of hurt in his eyes. "You had everything. The perfect life. Perfect looks, you had wealth, both of your parents. But what did I have? Nothing. All I had was a mother who worked minimum wage and a father who was always there for you but never there for me. I was kept a secret for years until your mother found out about me and how our father was having an affair with my mother. Do you even know how it felt? Being kept a secret? While you were having the world handed to you on a silver platter my mother and I were barely making by. That is until I found out about our father's little drug dealing business. I knew that was my shot to get even."
Anger shot up my spine as I clenched the landline. "So you're blaming me for our father's affairs? That wasn't my fault!" I shouted, making everyone look our way. He continued to stare me down. "Maybe you're right? Maybe I just wanted someone to blame? But what's done is done." He responded with a simple shrug of his shoulders.
"Why did you blackmail Isa?" I changed the subject.
"That was just for fun. So was messing with that Muslim chick, well at first. Then I noticed how much you cared about her and that just made it all the more better." I tried my best not to get angry. Calm down Adam , I thought to myself as I took in a deep breath.
"You're right where you belong and I hope you stay there." I hung up the landline and proceeded to make my way to where Isa and Zamzam were. Zamzam was talking to another guy other than my father. I recognized him as one of my father's men. "Why is she talking to him?" I asked Isa. He shrugged his shoulders in response. What's wrong with him today?
He's barely even said two words which is not like him. The moment she hung up I noticed she had tear streaks running down her cheeks. "Are you okay?" I worriedly reached out to her. One thing I really hate is seeing girls cry. I remember when I was dating Kathie whenever she'd cry I'd buy her favorite Ice Cream for her in hopes to cheer her up.
I don't know what I could do to cheer Zamzam up though. Her brother looked at her in alarm and approached her. She gave him a slight glance before crashing into his arms and for a split second I had wished that it was my arms that she was running into. As Zamzam let out silent cries, I turned to the man she was talking to and placed the phone against my ear.
"What did you say to her?" I questioned.
"That's enough." The police officer escorted him out before the guy could respond.
"I'm fine." Zamzam said as she wiped the remaining tears on her cheeks.
"I just felt overwhelmed but I'm good now. You should talk to your father." She added.
I don't want to talk to him. I realized that I don't care why he did anything. The point is he did it and it's time for me to move on. I don't ever want to see him ever again.
"Let's go."
