CHAPTER THIRTY FOUR: Best Thing I Never Knew I Needed
Zamzam Amin
"Aliyah stop moving!" I tried my best to finish her makeup but she was making it close to impossible at this point. "I can't! I'm sorry but I'm just so excited." She squealed. After much struggle I finished doing the finishing touches on her makeup. "Smile!" Our photographer for the day a.k.a Samantha said as she snapped a Polaroid photo of us.
I couldn't help but smile at Aliyah, she looks absolutely stunning Mashallah. We were inside Aliyah's room at the moment helping her get ready. All of the guests are downstairs eating and having fun as they wait for the guest of honor to come down. "You ready?" I squeezed her shoulders in excitement.
She nodded her head. "Let's go."
Aliyah stood before us while Sam and I linked arms in the back. "Our little girl has grown up." I fake cried. "They grow up so fast." Sam agreed as she pretended to cry as well. "Shut up." Aliyah said with a smile still plastered on her face as we walked down the stairs and into the wide living room. No wonder they didn't need to rent out a place. This house is huge! The moment Aliyah was seen everyone went silent and stared at her in awe. Amir's mouth literally dropped to the floor. I bet he's probably thinking what did I do to deserve her? I always knew they'd be a perfect match for each other.
From the side of the room I caught a glimpse of Adam. Mashallah, he looked good as always. He then looked at me and our eyes locked for a split second. That is until I looked away out of embarrassment. Aliyah sat next to Amir on a huge love shaped sofa.
Amir grabbed the ring he had in his pocket and placed it on Aliyah's finger. Aliyah also placed the ring she had on his finger. Everyone cheered around them and they were pushed to the dance floor.
"Who would've thought Amir would get engaged first?" Isa said with a chuckle.
"Tell me about it," I said with a chuckle. "I'm surprised you came back so soon."
"I wouldn't have missed it for the world. You can't get rid of me that fast lil sis." He looked at me as if I was ridiculous to think he wouldn't. "But, I have to go back tomorrow." He said in a solemn tone. After an hour or so all of the guest had left and it was just Aliyah, Samantha, Zahra, Amir, Isa and Alex along with my dad and Grams left.
All of the guys were in the living room while us girls were upstairs in the den.
"It's so hot. I'm going to go outside for a moment." I got up and headed to the backyard. It felt nice being out here in the star filled sky. "Zamzam?" Adam came outside as well. Wow this is the first time he's said my name in two months. "H-Hey... I'll leave if you want." I started to leave but he stopped me.
"I have something to say to you. Well two somethings actually." He buried his hands deep in his pocket as he rocked back and forth on his tip toes.
"I went to the masjid yesterday and said my Shahada."
I dropped the purse I had in my hand in shock. "Really!? That's amazing!" I exclaimed happily. I'm so happy he converted for himself.
"Yeah so you've won the bet. Congratulations."
"Why thank you," I did a small curtsy.
He let out a small smile but then it quickly faded. "What's wrong?" I asked worriedly. "It's the second thing. I'm leaving tomorrow morning."
"W-What? Where are you going? For how long?" I kept on asking questions. I don't want him to leave.
"I want to travel the world and figure some things out. Don't worry I'm going to come back but I just don't know when." He said, not even bothering to face me. "I'm going to miss you." I responded as I blinked a tear away.
"I got you something," He brought out a gift bag from behind him. "Open it," He handed it to me. I slowly grabbed the bag and opened it. The moment I saw what was inside I couldn't help but smile. "A scarf?" I brought it out of the bag.
"Ya, a scarf for my Scarfy."
My heart jumped the moment he said my Scarfy.
I used to hate him calling me that but now I've grown to love it. "Also whenever you're missing me just look up at the sky and know that somehow, somewhere we're both staring at the same sunset or star." He couldn't even stop himself from laughing after he finished his sentence. "I'm sorry that was so corny."
"I think I'll stick with looking at the scarf." I held the piece of cloth in my hands. "I'm really going to miss you."
"Me too but I'll be back before you know it. Maybe then we could take this relationship a step forward." He had a certain glint in his eyes when he said that. "Maybe," I replied. "Does everyone else know?" I added with raised eyebrows. "Yeah," He nodded his head. "I told them not to tell you."
"Well thanks for making sure I was the last to know." I'm not going to lie I was hurt that he told everyone before telling me. "The only reason why you were the last to know was because one, the best is always last. And two, I knew it would be hardest to say good bye to you and I was right. This is by far the hardest thing I've ever done. You've changed my life literally in a matter of 6 months, you helped me even when I kept telling you not to. You risked your life for me in so many ways more than one. And on top of that you managed to guide me to Islam. That's why I wanted to tell you last. Zamzam, you're the best thing I never knew I needed."
I didn't say anything for a moment and neither did he, we both just stared at the star filled sky. "Thank you," I cleared my throat. "For the scarf. I'll keep it in good condition."
"You should. I want to see you wearing it the day I come back. Only Allah knows when though." He replied, running a hand through his hair.
"Hurry up and figure yourself out. Once you do you know where to find me." With that I walked inside the house and leaned against the wall. It's so amazing how Allah planned for all of this to happen. He planned for Adam to hit on me that day I was reading the Quran in the cafeteria. He planned for Mrs. Smith to make us project partners.
He planned for it all to start with a dare.
